I am not exactly a fan of “Sailor Moon,” but I loved the 90’s anime greatly as a kid, and I was one of those who expressed frustration with Crystal in 2014.

But the problem was that TOEI was giving us 2 unfinished episodes each month.

I own SMC seasons 1–3 on DVD and I believe, today, that SMC seasons 1–2, at least, are fantastic. I was able to obtain the DVDs, to watch the finished product, and my opinion has changed. I love SMC seasons 1–2. To have a great experience watching seasons 1–2, you must watch at least 2 episodes per day. And SMC season 2, specifically, is actually superior to and much better than “Sailor Moon R,“ in my opinion.
It‘s funny that you always point out that you are not a fan of Sailor Moon. You own SM DVDs and post frequently here on the forum. What are you if not a fan? :-D

Oh, in the past “Sailor Moon“ fans accused me of not being “a real fan.”

I have my own opinions, there are aspects of the manga and 90’s anime I don’t particularly like, and, apparently, to be a real fan, you have to like everything and in some cases buy tons of merchandise.

Sailor Moon has never been a super high budget project. The 90s anime was horribly inconsistent, had some awful art directors (Masahiro Ando and Taichi Nakamura were literally my Satan), and did a lot of cheap things to avoid actually animating stuff. PGSM had extremely low budget costumes and effects. Even Naoko's manga had some errors that made me wonder what the editors were doing.

Sailor Moon Crystal was significantly worse than previous Sailor Moon projects, but acting like fans are suddenly dropping their standards from those of an avant garde elitist to those of someone who enjoys crayon scribbles is a massive reach. Sailor Moon fans have had to forgive and look past shoddy stuff for decades; this isn't new.

Besides, I don't think anybody trusts that a large company actually cares about them. No company gives a [BLEEP] about people. Toei is just another company that wants money, and we are all aware of this; we just like getting Sailor Moon content.

Also, making comparisons like this to abusive relationships is just very... out of touch.

Anyways, I honestly think they look fine, and the hate for season 3 is kind of crazy to me. I thought the Tellu and Saturn debut episodes looked absolutely lovely and significantly better than the 90s anime episodes done by Ando and Nakamura. Season 1 and 2 looked awful, though, with some exceptions.
well some people try to say that before when people were bashing crystal, the 90s didnt have much budget too, mh
well for me crystal did it better but most because of the manga, even with his inconsistencies
mh maybe some people though this movie will have the quality of the broly movie but well we have this

Ahhh. I suppose quite a few of us aren't 'real fans,' then. :P

Like I own the manga in two formats and I started the color edition as digital, I have the Italian dvds of the 90s but that pretty much is. I don't have any merch nor I am blind to all the not so good aspects of every version, but I consider myself a fan as I have following it since I was 3 year-old. Whoever told you that is wrong.

Oh, they're definitely wrong. But it's common for fandom communities to become toxic like this. 'I liked it first!' or 'I like it more than you!' I'm not sure what drives people to become competitive and hateful about something they literally have in common with the rest of the fandom, but...

I mean, according to that logic I was never a fan of Sailor Moon because I loathed the Ando episodes, lol. No offense to those who like his style. It's just not for me.

Ando is a funny one for me, because I don’t necessarily think that his episodes are terrible looking, they just Look so different from the Rest of the episodes that it becomes jarring. I like consistency. If every episode could look more lore less that same design wise I’m happy. Nakamura on the other hand..................... his episodes are awful! . Lol

Dream became a film either for budgetary reasons or because the way the manga is done doesn't work well as a series and would work better as a film. Honestly, none of the villains last long and things in the manga are not built upon for impressionable foes like in the series. The Amazon Trio die really early and so forth...pretty much forgettable. Imagine if we never knew them like we did in the 90s anime and they were monsters of the day?
That's one of the reasons why I tend to prefer the 90s anime version of them.

I'm hoping we see this smug face again. :P

But seriously out of all of the 90's anime villains she was the best, had a lot of depth to her.

I'd like to see how she'll look in Eternal. She looked badass in the 90s anime and manga.

I don't know where I sit on this fan-o-meter. I don't collect a lot of Sailor Moon stuff but I do love the show wholeheartedly. Sailor Moon fans come in lots of flavors I see. For me, it pulled me into anime but more importantly, guided me to my career and dreams. I'm always on the lookout for something new from the series. Even though I am not a serial collector, Sailor Moon is probably the only anime I've binged or will binge, would endure a two-episode per month affair with, have gone to the theatres to see the re-release of Sailor Moon 90's movies in my country, and wait years for a new movie release called Eternal.

Im still excited about the Eternal films. I can't wait to see Nehellinia as well. Im sure she will look good because the Trio, Quartet, and Zirconia look good and you can't have the big bad looking a mess. I'm curious how they will do her eyes?

i always considered myself a big stan, even if i am a bit critical. as a '98 baby, some of my earliest memories are of me and my older sister watching our vhs tapes of the dic dub, and i then went on to watch the original japanese anime, read the manga, watch pgsm, etc. i don't have that much merch, though; all i have are a few manga volumes, a spiral heart moon rod eyeliner i got in korea, some sailor venus keychains, a sailor venus figurine, a cosmic heart brooch keychain, and the colourpop sailor moon collection (if that counts lol).

I can agree with that. When I was a kid watching it the first time, I thought they had outsourced Ando's episodes elsewhere to save money. Lol. They just stand out so much from the others.

I'm not too familiar with Nakamura's style, at least by name.

As for me, I collect some loot, and I enjoy SM in just about all its forms, but I'm also openly critical of flaws. Sailor Moon isn't perfect in any form, it's flawed in places, but I mean, you could say the same of nearly anything. But I do think it's a damn fine series given the limitations it's had since its inception as a rushed, unexpectedly extended manga one shot.

nakamura's the guy who gave them massive shoulders and tiny heads and did the crescent beam shower episode. ando's style was fugly, too, but at least his animation was dynamic; meanwhile, nakamura's animation was beyond stiff and lazy.

i get why people don't like ando's style, it really does feel like it came from a different series, but i don't really remember his episodes having noticeable worse animation or anything, which i've seen some people say. they aren't overly stiff, they can be pretty expressive, and the style works pretty good for comedic scenes. definitely not the worst, but i get the dislike for him.

Episode 9 is what comes to mind, but it gets worse later on. A bit like Ando, his first episodes like 11 are actually quite charming, but later one it gets worse.

I'd say I started watching Sailor Moon in 95. I never had access to the best toys since Im from America and a guy and it was pretty much a bad look to be a boy into Sailor Moon growing up. However, I do fondly remember destroying the life of many trees because I used to print binder full pictures of Sailor Moon. I knew about the Outers and everything before even seeing the Japanese version completely. Sailor Moon remains my favorite magical girl anime (along with Cutey Honey) while Ronin Warriors and Yu Yu Hakusho are my favorite shounens. I don't think I'd jump up to see any other new anime or buy treasured merchandise unless it was from these shows. As of now I have not one Sailor Moon poster in possession. I have a lanyard, Sailor Jupiter bobblehead, a Tuxedo Kamen plush. The rest are just DVDs of Classic, Movies and PGSM. My collection is rather light. You can say I am more of a fan of the anime than the manga but I respect the manga dearly as being the first source.

I never showered myself with Sailor Moon accessories so every time something new appears, I get excited.

i think something that really bothered me about ando, aside from his fugly style, was how pervy he was. i'm pretty sure like 90% of the upskirt shots in the show were done by him, and the way he did the dimande-kidnapping-usagi episode was incredibly uncomfortable to watch. the writing of that episode was just straight up awful and misogynistic, and it's one of those moments where you can really tell the anime was written by a bunch of men. i wish it never happened in any version, but at least the manga gave usagi the power to fight back and escape on her own; meanwhile, the anime turns it into a damsel in distress moment and makes the kiss scene like 100x more difficult to watch. i had to skip it in my recent rewatch.
