Even in the original version of the manga, the Inners are referred to several times as "shugosenshi" ("guardian soldiers") with "guardian" given in furigana as the intended reading, so it can be argued that "Sailor Guardian" isn't really a new term. During the nineties, the anime and general marketing materials seemed to prefer translating "senshi" as "soldier" (as in "Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon"). Now, in the 2000s, they're going with "guardian." Maybe it'll change again one day.
Because "soldier" is a military term and sounds aggressive, while "guardian" sounds like some innocent person defending from aggression. A belated attempt to shift the responsibility for countless people murdered by the senshi while they were pursuing their political goals and consolidating power to rule the planet.
The same tactic was used by Thutmose III, Alexander of Macedon, Julius Caesar, Hitler, Stalin, and every other murderous psychopath throughout the human history. None of them admitted they aggressively attacked anybody, ever. They always claimed they were defending from aggression, and conquered other countries and nations solely because there was no other choice to "protect" and "guard" innocent people.

Remember someone here has a problem with them Sailors being too attractive. And with the recent trends of unattractive women becoming the central focus like Abby in 'The Last Of Us 2' why not invest in a new adaptation called 'Unattracive Woman Sailor Moon'?

If they'd change the English title again, "Pretty Protector Sailor Moon" seems to be another good choice.

Soldiers was fine as they have to get aggressive sometimes with powerful enemies. Guardian is fine too I guess but I do like Pretty Protector Sailor Moon. It has a nice ring to it actually.

They should've just kept it "Sailor Senshi." That rolls off the tongue much better than "Sailor Guardian."

It has been and probably always will be "Sailor Senshi" (or "Seeraa Senshi") in Japanese. But whereas they used to use "Sailor Soldiers" as the English translation (such as in the chanting in some of the BGM in the '90s anime), they now use "Sailor Guardian" (such as the song "We are the Pretty Guardian" in the La Reconquista musical). Wherever "Sailor Senshi" was used before, "Sailor Senshi" is still used today.
