Rumors are that he got screwed over on that too but because they had to change things after the 2011 earthquake & tsunami happened.

Well, she deleted all Crystal related things in her twitter page. Maybe she did not liked working with Toei, maybe she couldn't deal with all the Crystal hate towards her art idk idk
Sakai at least says he worked on Crystal in his twitter bio

I do feel sorry for her some because she did get some hate.

Her key-visual and everything was fine to me but it was the episodes which I am under the impression we're sourced out to lower budget studios that were the problem.

Was she the one who had to go back and fix the errors for the Blu-Ray or were that someone else?

Seems like a real tough job.

Look at ep 2. It seems to be the matter of tight schedule. We know that they can draw very beautifully, but at the first release, all they could offer wasn't unbearable.
Honestly, if the quality had dropped from episode 10 or 13 instead of episode 2, this series wouldn't have drawn that much hatred.

I think she did corrections for the blu ray, idk if all of them also she was chief animation director (as any character designer) but was dropped after 5 episodes or something like that and wasnt even CAD on season 2

she did some good job fixing things tho:
akira vs yukie:
Spoiler: show

She did some corrections, but most of the job after the first 5 episodes was done by Kazue Komatsu, although she came back for the final two episodes. I cannot believe how one of the animators that needed most corrections done for the blu ray became animation director of the third season.

Now think about it, back in 2016, you could easily get bashed for saying you don't like Akira's style.

Still wouldn't have worked cause all their manpower are concentrated in One Piece, Dragonball and Precure.

What surprised me the most was the worst drawn frames were actually drawn in Japan according to one member here. The injustice they did to :rei:.

Well we did get the meme. :googly:

I still wonder if the ugly faces/frames were a protest by the animators to say: “If you want decent animation you have to invest into it and treat the artist behind it well”. I can’t imagine those people to be so badly skilled.
Seems like Toei didn’t care enough and was okay with it. And Sakai and Sakou probably suffered most, because it was about their reputation.

Dragonball Supers has those terrible frames too.
Admittedly it looks much better than Crystal's worst.

That big-headed Rei? lol
Not sure what to describe it. Twisted eye :rei:?

From what I've seen of TMM, it looks a mess. Some things are not too bad and the transformations are a little creative but ....
yep, they change more things from the manga than crystal, and some impacts moments were turn down
well i like better some old transformations than the new ones, a example minto transformation i like her ballet transformation, i think the only one better is ichigo that i think in the old series didnt have a good attack
they really cut out minto debut episode x.x
i know for some the first season of crystal was a mess but i feel it better than this XD

They cut out Mint's introduction (she is a lot like like Sailor V), but they pretty much combined the plot of that chapter with another episode and actually gave her a lot of character development. Whereas Crystal in its first season actually removed a lot of little scenes that developed the Inners' characterization.

As a whole, I would say Tokyo Mew Mew New had a SIGNIFICANTLY better first season than Crystal. The Dark Kingdom arc was a disaster. But in terms of animation, TMMN is not too different from S3 or Eternal.

The problem with Crystal S1&2's animation was that Toei had stretched their talent pool incredibly thin with a million different projects at the time (it's actually been a problem with the entire industry since the mid-2000's, really), the schedule didn't allow the staff time to actually properly draw everything, there's a ton of outsourcing to other studios with less experienced animators under an equal amount of crunch, and there's a ton of difficulties in constantly communicating with a bunch of different studios under said tight schedule.
Combine that with extremely intricate and unconventional designs and you have a recipe for disaster.

Drawing takes time, and drawing designs like Sako's takes even more time. Even that infamous episode of Dragon Ball Super had extremely skilled veterans like Ken Otsuka working on it, but the vast majority of people simply can't draw as fast as studios are demanding these days. People blame the budget a lot, but no amount of money is going to fix a terrible production schedule caused by the need to go work on even more shows. Super actually had a very large budget in order to pump out all those episodes in such a short time, iirc. It's sort of like giving Leonardo Da Vinci a billion dollars and telling him to make you The Last Supper in three minutes. You're only gonna get stick figures at that point.

Nobody wants their work to look as ugly as it ended up being, but when you have thousands of other drawings to work on in a short period of time, and/or you're a new animator who's still learning and honing your skills, you're pretty much forced to sketch something as fast as possible and hope the animation director has the time to fix it. Sadly, the animation directors were busy fixing tons of other things that probably looked even worse than the infamous Usagi and Rei scenes.

Nah, it definitely wasn't intentional. Shows like that can ruin the reputations of the animators, too. In fact, there's a lot of instances where animators ask for their names to be removed from the credits because of how displeased they are with the end result of their work.
