Sailor Moon - Earth 2 (and other artwork)

I've decided to make a thread about this little project I've been slowly doing since 2019 since I've had a few people message me curious about the art in my signature.
It's an alternate universe comic series called Earth 2 where the events of Sailor Moon are similar but also a bit different. I don't know if I'll ever draw the actual comic but I've created some mock up comic covers and character designs.

I'm posting them here for you all to enjoy, I don't mind constructive criticism but if you're going to outright try and put me down or post any negative comments *cough* you know who you are *cough* then you can exit this thread. Drawing the 90s anime style is VERY difficult and I put effort into these.

I haven't got around to finishing the issue 6 cover yet. Covers 1-4 I did in 2019 and although I don't mind them I do see small improvements that can be made from two years back. Cover 5 I did in February.

Things on this earth are a bit different, for instance Neptune is in the main team instead of Mercury, Usagi's first power wand is the Moon Kaleido Scope, Minako is still Sailor V (for now), Saturn is from the future and is already Eternal, Most of the girls attend different schools, Chibi Chibi is grown-up, Mamoru has his own guardian cat, etc.

Nice art! I think you capture the look of the 90s anime fairly well.

Intrigued by the differences. What's the reasoning behind each of those changes? Is Mamoru's cat related to Luna or Artemis' family?

I read american comics and have always been fascinated with "what if" scenarios that usually come up with different Earths in a multiverse with different outcomes.

So far I am kinda going with the idea that Royalty always have some kind of feline advisor haha so since he would be from Earth, he wouldn't be related to Artemis or Luna.

Gotcha! The differences already piqued my interest so that's a good sign.

So far I am kinda going with the idea that Royalty always have some kind of feline advisor haha so since he would be from Earth, he wouldn't be related to Artemis or Luna.

Very nice onesurvive I quite like alot of your art for this Earth 2 universe. I have always liked your art quite a bit and I have always admired how you have been able to replicate the 90s art so well. I do find it interesting with seemingly the Sailor Starlights coming in during the Dark Kingdom arc and also Sailor Mercury and Sailor Star Maker both being brainwashed to be Beryl's servants. I also think it is rather cool that many of the Sailor Senshi are going to different schools in this version. IE Michiru and Minako both going to Michiru's old Jr. High school she attended with Elza Gray before going to Mugen Academy. I am curious what are you calling this school in your version? Likewise I also think it is rather interesting that both Rei and Yaten attend Mugen Academy in this version as well as Usagi in this version attending Shiba Koen Jr. High aka Minako's school in all other versions unstead of Juuban Jr. High. I am curious does Makoto also still attend her old school or did she transfer to one of the other character's schools?

I also like that you have Mamoru as Moonlight Knight. While I did love Mamoru as Tuxedo Mask I always thought his Moonlight Knight outfit was gorgeous. I would have loved it if it could have even been an upgrade form of his since he is Earth's Senshi and it would have been nice if he got outfit upgrades like the others. Plus I like the idea of you giving Mamoru his own Guardian Cat. I myself flited with doing the same except eventually giving him a Tuxedo Cat since he is Tuxedo Mask and also as a nice tribute to my old cat Raven who is a Tuxedo Cat.

Thanks for the feedback. I kinda played with the idea that Beryl is really around the whole time and kinda teaming with the other villians in a way (Helping Nehelenia, sealing away the Sailor Quartette, awakening Saturn with Galaxia). I'm glad you caught on to Star Marker also being brainwashed too with Mercury (I guess she is in the 3rd cover looking kinda evil so it's a giveaway).

Yeah it seems like a good idea! I was thinking of naming his orange cat Rafael.

Yeah I kind figured I'd have Mako go to Shiba but with the same uniform problem. I also really tried to point out that it's Rei not Hotaru with long hair in cover 5 with the Mugen uniform as I realized quickly their design can look quite similar.I'm glad the earings and henshin pen helped haha.

Probably just the same name Shirakaba High School I think it was called. Also Mikako wears glasses on this earth so she will be keeping her Sailor V "googles" when transformed as Venus later on.

Haha okay, what I've thought up so far is....

- Queen Beryl is the ruler of all rulers, best "friend" of Queen Nehelenia during the Silver Millennium.
- Minako and Michiru are the first to awaken, Although Minako is in her Sailor V outfit to begin she is known as Sailor Venus.
- Usagi's beginning is more or less the same, she receives the transformation broach and Moon Kaleido Scope from Luna. She then meets Rei and Mako. They're the first three on their team. Eventually Yaten comes into the picture unknown why he is a senshi (as he is male) to Luna who senses him and awakens his identity as Star Healer (who is then female when transformed). The four are a team until both Mikako and Michiru come to join. They battle the Dark Kingdom.
- Meanwhile Setsuna is awoken on her own while dealing with the Dead Moon Cirus threat happening alongside the Dark Kingdom doing their own thing against Usagi's team. Setsuna then finds Ami, Haruka and Seiya (they're also not sure at first why he is male). They defeat the Circus and at the very end Saturn comes from the future of Crystal Tokyo to warn the team about the Black Moon clan who is soon to arrive and to join forces with Usagi's team to battle.
- Somewhere along the line Beryl senses Taiki before he can awaken as a senshi and brainwashes him to becoming evil.
- Setsuna's team meets Usagi's team and assist with the Dark Kingdom who is now in cahoots with the Black Moon clan who have come from the future to destroy the past.
- Ami is taken from the team and brainwashed by Star Maker to join the Dark Kingdom.
- Chibiusa and Chibi Chibi show up from the future to help Saturn and the Guardians. Usagi gets a power boost from them as Super Sailor Moon (receives the Cutie Moon Rod) along with the rest of the Guardians becoming Super (sans Starlights).
- Star Marker and Mercury are saved from being brainwashed. While this happens the dark force from them takes Chibiusa who becomes Black Lady.
- The team then defeat the Black Moon/Death Phantom/Dark Kingdom. Queen Beryl escapes and is not to be found. Black Lady then becomes White Lady (no pun intended) as her power crystal was destroyed.
- Sailor Galaxia comes to earth as the new threat and the Starlights learn about their true history in another galaxy.
- Beryl comes out of hiding and into conflict with Galaxia at first then eventually the two work together.
- The whole team battles Galaxia/Beryl, healing the guardians turned by Chaos, the Sailor Quartette are freed and join the now huge team.
- Chibi Chibi is revealed to be Galaxia's star seed implanted into Neo-Queen Serenity and merged with her own star seed in the future, up until that point her origin was unknown.
- Sailor Moon becomes Eternal and obtains the Princess Harp/Sword. Chibusa gets a new power crystal and becomes Princess Sailor Moon.
- Beryl and Galaxia in the end learn the "error of their ways" and become good, they are defeated, Chaos is destroyed.
- Mamoru is the Moonlight Knight the entire time, his future persona is still King Endymion. He never becomes Tuxedo Mask.
- The moon has 2 guardian cats Luna and Artemis, in the future they have Diana. Earth's guardian cat is Rafael belonging to Mamoru, he is around Diana's age and eventually falls in love with Diana.

...and that's it so far haha.

Let me first start out by saying not only are the ideas themselves imaginative, but the changes you propose do make a very strong amount of narrative sense. It's clear that not only a lot of thought was put into the idea, but that from a writing perspective, you have formulated a strong, clear outline.

I do see where you worked on this and replicating the 90's style, and in some areas, this is done well. The coloring is good and you've very good demonstrating clothing and how it wrinkles and folds. You also have a clear idea of how to arrange cover art and choose good poses for it; not even the official material does this at times. Plus you give these characters personality. There are flaws, but lifelessness is not one of them.

But there are are a couple of big flaws which render these drawings a few steps below absolutely gorgeous.

The first of these is your lineart. Your lines are very inconsistent and "shaky" in a lot of spots, which is especially noticeable in some images like that of the Moonlight Knight. It does take away from the effort you spent on making the clothing drape just right. Especially for a cover, the lineart has to be confident, consistent, and clear.

The second big flaw is your sense of perspective, which influences the anatomy. I see you're definitely averting the pencil-thin proportions of the original anime, but it looks like your anatomy is inconsistent with the perspectives you are using, especially when it comes to Sailor Moon herself.

Finally, I notice that there seem to be issues with many of the characters you've drawn with objects in their hands. In many cases, the hand poses do not line up with the objects they are holding.

None of these flaws make your art unenjoyable, but they do hold it back from being amazing.

Yeah drawing with the tablet sometimes makes it shakey depending on the distance away I am from the area I'm drawing. I use illustrator to kind of shape them smoother a bit but it only does so much. The covers from 2019 we're done on paper then put to the computer, my latest ones are done all on the computer as I learned how to control the tablet more.

I think this comes from growing up on American comics and they're what I am used to drawing. They usually have unrealistic body perspectives. As for the hands.... like many artists I HATE doing hands, most of the time even when using a reference to look at I kinda say "screw it, good enough" and leave well enough alone. haha. I also use references for the item details so that could be the reason, I draw it exactly.

I really like your work on this. I mean, I like anything that is a callback to the Silver Age, so the title of this project made me smile, but I really look the whole aesthetic you have gone for with this and commend the effort you've obviously put in! These portraits and covers are just really, really pretty. Keep up the good work!!

Wow your art is amazing! I think it's super cool how you're starting your own doujinshi, the only other Western made doujin I've come across in this SM fandom was Future Reunion by Mangakachan.

You’ve really improved over the years in remarkable ways, though I’ve always liked your style regardless. I’d like to read these comics someday!
