Ando and Nakamura stand out, but I did like Ando and found his style cute. Nakamura on the other hand always looked ugly and stiff to me and when I watched the episode preview I though „Oh no, not that ugly style again!“ Today out of nostalgia I can appreciate even Nakamura‘s episodes. They look so beyond everything and that makes it special. At least there was consistency throughout the episode. Crysternal changes style in every other scene, which is very distracting.

I will always respect and love the 90s anime as it was my introduction to the whole medium, but the manga got me hooked and made me rediscover the franchise and I ended up loving it way more. I still love the 90s for the character moments, but the manga is always my first choice when it comes to overall story.

i think something that really bothered me about ando, aside from his fugly style, was how pervy he was. i'm pretty sure like 90% of the upskirt shots in the show were done by him, and the way he did the dimande-kidnapping-usagi episode was incredibly uncomfortable to watch. the writing of that episode was just straight up awful and misogynistic, and it's one of those moments where you can really tell the anime was written by a bunch of men. i wish it never happened in any version, but at least the manga gave usagi the power to fight back and escape on her own; meanwhile, the anime turns it into a damsel in distress moment and makes the kiss scene like 100x more difficult to watch. i had to skip it in my recent rewatch.
The 90's anime, correct?

I think Nakamura's best was :mihiru: playing the violin and dancing with a lemon at the same time.

There was another one in Stars that had the same kind of character design. It was the fight between all 4 outers against Galaxia. I really hated that scene cause for one the animation goes from good to bad and the those faces remind me of Nakamura's style.

I wish though that either Tadano, Ikuko Ito, or Miho shimogasa did the animation throughout the entire series. Their work was always beautiful. Although whomever did the age switch episode, was amazing! The episode is gorgeous.
There was an episode in S that was fantastic animation and direction wise. It was the episode where Mimete dies on the television. Such a well-done episode.

Actually, he worked on several episodes! Just not as an animation director. From what I can find, he was an animator on:
The R Movie
S: ep125
SuperS: the Opening sequence, ep139, ep146, ep152, ep158 (also AD), and ep166

Source: 黒沢守 - 作画@wiki

So beautiful! Would be amazing if they had brought him in to be AD on crystal/Eternal.

I don’t need movie quality but I want to able to watch something sailor moon and just enjoy how pretty it is. I don’t want to be taken out of the story by wonky animation.

The funny thing is, is that I didn’t focus on animation all at until I saw the first Two seasons of crystal and was so gobsmacked at how terrible the animation was. Ever since I go into every anime hyper critical about every frame and I hate it. lol I defiantly would have enjoyed season 3 a lot more of the first two seasons had that a decent level of consistency.

Oh, in the past “Sailor Moon“ fans accused me of not being “a real fan.”

I have my own opinions, there are aspects of the manga and 90’s anime I don’t particularly like, and, apparently, to be a real fan, you have to like everything and in some cases buy tons of merchandise.

:kero:
Hate those types of fanboys, encountered those when I expressed parts of Crystal I disliked, even when I wasn't being hostile.

i get why people don't like ando's style, it really does feel like it came from a different series, but i don't really remember his episodes having noticeable worse animation or anything, which i've seen some people say. they aren't overly stiff, they can be pretty expressive, and the style works pretty good for comedic scenes. definitely not the worst, but i get the dislike for him.
It starts going downhill in season 4, or rather at the very end of season 3, episode 127. I always liked the way he drew Ami/Mercury though, he always seemed to draw her fine (except episode 170).

LOL. Nehellenia's hand. Although doesn't looks as bad as any of the worst frames of episode 3 of Crystal. XD

I wouldn't know. It's one of those episodes that had various animation teams working on an episode.
Just love the way :hotaru: spins her glaive here.

Spoiler: show

Everything looks like Nakamura's style from here on.

It doesn't look like Nakamura's to me, it looks cleaner and sharper (dunno if it's just my eyes or not though). Now that I look at it, Nakamura looks more like his art would fit in something like Gall Force or something from the mid 80's.

Funny thing Nakamura's last work was that special episode of SuperS with the vampire lemures in it. Not sure if it was just an error or he was given a dream team to work with. XD

It had one of the best fight scenes in the whole franchise IMO.
The only letdown is that the soldiers get miserably beaten out until they get saved by... Chibimoon's Pink Sugar Heart Attack.

I feel the Stars finale episodes looked ugly because there was a lot of fighting and they couldn't afford for good-looking episodes if they had a lot of motion at that point.

Yes, I remember that episode was choreographed very well. The Daimon was a tough one.

Stars did have a lot of fight scenes. A lot of the episodes could have be done away with since not much was going on. Hopefully, the Crystal version of Stars will be padded out well.

Only the movies are in actual HD. The series only look blurred in blu ray, especially ViZ ones as they are mere upscale that downgrades the quality. But in the movies that have proper HD version thinks do pop up. But this is normal for cel animation.
