Charlene Ingram announced on her Facebook that she's leaving Viz on May 21st (she has a new job at a video game company). I'm not sure how much of an impact that will leave, but it does look like Sailor Moon was her baby, and I wouldn't be surprised if she was the reason why they even got the show at all. A lot of Viz's hype for this show has already disappeared (the Moonlight Parties, slower release schedule, sloppier booklets, etc), and it might get even worse... or it might all improve. Who knows? Viz is still mostly a manga company, and their anime division is quite small compared to FUNimation and Sentai Filmworks. They started licensing a lot more shows after Charlene jumped ship from FUNimation, but lately, they're focusing almost all of their effort solely on Naruto, Pokemon (DVD only), Jojo, One-Punch Man (a shorter show) and Sailor Moon. They did an outstanding job with Ranma 1/2, but it looks like that happened during a very specific time when they were more open to something different, when they also got smaller shows like Lagrange, K, Gargantia, Coppelion, Nura, Zetman, and Tiger & Bunny. I'm not sure just how much influence Char had, but it wouldn't surprise me if Viz goes back to how they used to be, when they only focused on a few big shows (at one point, it was all Bleach, Naruto, Pokemon, and Death Note). It seems like Sailor Moon was licensed during a time when Viz was taking more risks, and Char was doing her best to help it compete more with FUNi. It's clearly a show that means a lot to her, and I do wonder if FUNi would have gotten if she was still there, and if so, how their releases would've compared. Just something to think about.
She did say she'll still be hosting the Sailor Moon events at AX this July, so I guess she's still sort of the unofficial Viz!Sailor Moon mascot.
