I voted for Kaolinite and Professor Tomoe because it seems like we don't really get a whole lot of villain couples outside of Zoisite and Nephrite and if we count Siren and Lead Crow.
But did the professor actually reject her? I could envision they're often :cthulhu:'ing offscreen.

It seemed more like he was only using her for his own objectives and he quickly discarded her when Mistress Nine was awakened and didn't care that she was killed. Even though she was a terrible person, I still felt sorry for Kaolinite and I think it would have made things interesting if he did actually love her and wasn't just using her.

I also would add to Neon Genesis that Zoisite and Nephrite were not a couple they were rivals who were hostile to each other Zoisite was with Kunzite.

Next as for Tomoe and Kaolinite it would be interesting I know that Hotaru for instance probably would not approve though it would be interesting if Kaolinite turned good how they would handle that.

I feel like between her wistful gazes at him and his obsessive laser focus fixation on creating a race of super humans, they probably haven't canoodled. It does seem that theirs is the most popular unrequited love thus far, though. I wish they could have been "healed" and then gotten married. Seeing good!Kaolinite as Hotaru's stepmother would have been interesting.

OK, I can see how Kaolinite's love for the professor was an unrequited one - it's too bad that the possessed professor seemed to be so asexual, otherwise the plot would've been more interesting. lol

I've communicated in the past that I'm not that partial to shipping, and while I do have some ships I prefer, it's not a critical factor in my enjoyment to the series. However, I can't help but notice that quite a few of the ships I would have liked to have seen are of the unrequited pairings listed in the poll.

Before I get to the Other category, I will provide my thoughts on the couples I wish were canon.

Prince Demande and Neo Queen Serenity -- Let me stress the following. I would never want their existing canon equivalents to get together. I do not condone Demand's horrific acts in Sailor Moon media, and I'm not pretending what he did was right. However, I really wish a version of the two of them could have been a couple, if going by the old anime continuity.

One big factor is that in the old anime, between the dark energy and Wiseman's manipulation, we never did see much of what an uncorrupted Demande. Unlike the manga/Crystal where the self-styled Prince rebelled completely of his own free will, old anime Demande was clearly given a heavy push towards evil and cruelty. I'm not saying he wasn't a jerk as even Saphir's flashback indicated he was domineering, but it can never be known how much of the effect the Dark Crystal, negative energy, and Wiseman had on him. See the difference between the evil Spectre Sisters and the good Sepctre Sisters and even Saphir lost the mark of Black Moon Clan, proof that, yes, these people weren't entirely themselves. Conversely we also saw how evil Chibi-Usa became as Black Lady. Given that Demande did start to change his mind, there's some evidence he might not have been what we saw for the most of the time he was on screen. It's easy to read his desire for Neo-Queen Serenity as a twisted desire to want to change, or even worse, the subconscious knowledge that they would have been compatible under different circumstances...

Kaolinite and Professor Tomoe -- Again, this is more for the anime, since in the manga, both really are devoted to Pharaoh 90 in that version and neither is likely themselves. Like Demande, I don't think we really got to see what Kaolinite was fully like, as like nearly all the Death Busters, she had that pupilless gaze. Plus, it is somewhat cruel for her to serve Tomoe and Pharaoh 90, only for get killed for seemingly no reason. I would have loved it if not only she and Tomoe gotten together, but for Hotaru to have maybe a younger brother or sister.

Adonis/Danburite and Sailor Venus -- I wish this had been requited in either the past or the present. If it had been requited in the past, then it would have made Venus having to kill him a lot more tragic as they would have been meant to be if the Dark Kingdom didn't get in their way. If it had been requited in the present, then it would have shown the Dark Kingdom is no match for true love, and it would have given more hope that Mamoru could also have been brought from the brink.

Also, I would have liked for this to be requited because it would have been nice to see Venus in a romantic relationship (even her relationship with Kunzite in Crystal was backstory). I get the irony that Venus is a goddess of love but fails in romance, but I don't like it.

Other
  • Makoto and Crane Game Joe -- Of all the one-shot crushes Mako had, this is the one I most of all wish were canon. There is so much about these two that make the perfect couple. She's a physical girl who is outgoing and fierce. He's an introverted, slightly cowardly guy with the power of telekinesis. She is a reincarnated warrior from the Silver Millennium, and he is a reincarnated warrior from the Dark Kingdom. Plus, again Crane Game Joe was clearly being affected by Zoisite's first extraction attempt, so a lot of his less desirable actions could be chalked up to that (plus, I really don't see what was all that wrong with him running away from Mako and not "protecting" her; he's being targeted and he knows it, Mako is just collateral damage, If anything, running away would be "protecting" her.)
  • Makoto and Seijuro Ginga -- This was a one-episode crush, but it was one of Mako's better crushes, and I definitely prefer Jupiter and Ail as a couple to the love-square foolishness we got in the episodes. While, of course, this particular crush is boosted heavily by the old dub (where Alan did open up, becoming much more friendly to her), even in the original version, Ail did break his façade somewhat. Jupiter's theme is plants, woods, and trees, while Ail is a tree person, so thematically, they really go together. I even put together a fan screencap composition (old dub continuity, though, with Fiore as an Alan stunt double).
  • Seijuro Ginga/Ail and Usagi -- At the same time, of all of Usagi's various alternate love interests, I love this one the most. Ail was just right for her, in my opinion in a way that even Demande (who I support above) and Mamoru (who got away with a LOT of stunts). He doesn't love her for an ideal, because of a past life, or because she reminds him of a princess. He loves her because of her. To be fair, En's thought that he has done this before does undercut it, slightly, but it also supports the idea that Ail and En are really bad for each other (note how much more co-operative with humans -- even when they try NOT to be -- they are when separated and how much more malicious they get when they get together). Plus, unlike most of the unrequited ships, there are hints that if it weren't for Usagi's memories of Mamoru, she would reciprocate his affections. She needs to move on from her past as much as he does.
  • Rei/Sailor Mars and Mamoru - I love Rei and Yuichiro, so I wouldn't break up their sorta-pairing, but I really loved the dynamic Rei had with Mamoru, even though, much like with Natsumi, Mamoru was more putting up with her presence than actively courting her. It would have been nice if despite him remembering being in love with the Princess, that he realized he was in love with Rei now.

For me my number one unrequited love wish would be 90's anime/Musicals Demande & Saphir, but I'm biased because they're already my SM OTP. Though at least in the 90's anime it's not certain how unrequited Saphir's affections actually are considering Demande does do that one intimate hairbrush scene with him. It could be Demande is just a cheater or polyamorous corrupted by Wiseman who feels he's entitled to whoever he wants. (Now Esmeraude's affections for him on the other hand are definitely unrequited)

Runners up would be 90's Rei, Beryl, Fiore, Fish-Eye, and/or Manga/Musical Pluto with Mamoru, because as Nadia herself stated, I think it would be interesting if Usagi & Mamoru fought against their destiny and fell in love with others in their new lives. For Usagi, her with Demande is a definite NO, even 90's anime Demande, because manipulated or not what he did to her was completely unacceptable, he's a rapey creep and 90's anime Seiya also has issues since they're an emotionally exploitative, manipulative "nice guy" who pushes Usagi's very clearly stated boundaries and can't seem to take no for an answer. I think for a non-Mamoru unrequited love option I like her with Minako best in the manga (yes I could see Minako being secretly in love with her Princess, shut up and no please don't bring up Haruka, while I do believe she's in unrequited love with her Princess in the manga, the fact that she kisses Usagi without her consent and is allegedly cheating on Michiru is a no-go for me) for the 90's anime Ail could possibly work for Usagi, he would actually need to break up with En first and sort out his feelings for her which I think would actually be the best thing for both of them because they're too codependent on the other and are all each other ever knew - it'd probably be healthier for both of them if they get out there and meet new people, cause clearly they're both itching to

And while I do ship Ace/Minako and like the idea of Minako returning his affections, I like it the way it is being unrequited as well as I feel there's sort of a tragic poignancy to it that suits both Minako and Ace's lives, so with them I can honestly take it or leave it.

While I agree with you that 90's anime Demande was probably a good person at heart who was just twisted by both Wiseman and the Dark Crystal, I don't believe he fell for NQS out of a subconcious desire to change. Rather I think her cold gaze being directed at him triggered his inferiority complex over not being seen as "human" enough by the Earthlings so he wanted to prove it back to her that he was by getting her to love him, it was his own personal form of validation.

Another unrequited love that I forgot to mention, even though it's more just an unrequited crush, is it'd be nice if Minako also returned Artemis's feelings, since in the manga it's implied he has a slight crush on her and definitely thinks she's attractive. I think she's a better match for him than Luna anyways. They could still have Diana through artificial insemination or just a one-night stand.

Professor Tomoe and Kaolinite because Kaolinite has always love Professor Tomoe and she wants to be with him too, but too bad Professor Tomoe didn't feel the same way about her. I feel like they could have been a good couple and that Kaolinite would have been a good stepmother for Hotaru.

Maybe Setsuna could marry the professor & become Hotaru's stepmom too, tho that just relates to fanshipping rather than a canon unrequited love. lol

Yeah, I don't think Rei hates men at all. I just think she doesn't need men. There's a big difference. She's not hostile to Mamoru, loves her grandpa and never seems to have an issue with other male characters specifically (outside of villains).
She sees the Starlights as a possible threat, and that extends to them when posing as male or female.

I don't really like the idea of any of the unrequited romances becoming requited. Maybe I'm a meany?
Kaolinite and Tomoe are possessed...so maybe they would be cute if they were unpossessed? I feel like she definitely had a thing for him. I wonder how much of his personality was being controlled in S. Was he that zany? Or was that all Germatoid? Because if so, that alien/demon knew how to have a good time.

I felt sorry for Esmeraude, but her love seemed so one-sided.

I think Pluto's love for Endymion is interesting and I loved how she blushed in Crystal, I would never want him to leave Usagi for her, Setsuna deserves someone who can take away her loneliness, and I think her found family does that for the time being.

Thinking of how Uranus and Neptune are allowed to have romance and the others not makes me wonder about that lost SuperS/Stars movie where Uranus has to save Neptune on a black pegasus and face the other Senshi to do so.
I can imagine her being torn by her mission to protect Serenity and be with Neptune. Imagine Neptune being placed in a prison or deep sleep to prevent their romance from affecting the balance and Haruka saying "Screw that!" and doing what it takes to save her....
and I went way off track.

Perhaps the possession of them is partial, i.e. the possessing demons only control them to the extent of being able to accomplish the demons' mission, but the rest of their personality/memory is still allowed to manifest itself, e.g. the professor's love & care of his daughter. :)

I really like Seiya and Usagi in the anime but I don't know if I would say they should throw the miracle romance out the window.
Seiya is more like Togashi and Mamoru like Ikuhara.

All of this, except for Usagi and Seiya. Seiya is a pathetic emotional manipulator in the 90s anime and is probably worse than all the kidnappers, groomers etc on the show. Luna and Rhett are my ship, and human Artemis and Minako.
