Will Sailor Moon or Sailor Moon Crystal ever return to Toonami?

I was wondering if there was any chance of this happening and also because that's where I first discovered the series and would love to see it return back to Toonami.

They revealed on their Pre-flight video podcast in June 2016 that they tried to get Crystal but were outbid by Hulu so that won't be happening anytime soon, if ever.

I wish but no that won't be happening in our lifetime we'd sooner get the Dreams arc in crystal LOL

Probably for the best Hulu got it first. Their license to it might expire by the time it gets to the SuperS (and maybe even StarS if they choose to adapt it), giving Toonami a lot of content to air without ridiculous gaps inbetween.

I doubt it. Even though I hardly watch TV nowadays, I know that Cartoon Network (which owns Toonami) doesn't reintroduce or even rerun older shows. They may still see Sailor Moon as this "dated" and "failed experiment" that cancelled its run over fifteen years ago.

Didn’t stop them from running Dragon Ball Z Kai which is essentially reruns of a 20+ year old series

I believe it also has to do with sm being shoujo notice the lack of the genre on toonami it's all shounen types cause that's their target audience
they cater to 14 year old boys up to collage age stoner types do you really think they would watch sailor moon in any form besides finding the transformations trippy?

It's possible. It wouldn't be the first time they've gotten a show after it's been streaming elsewhere. I'm sure they would do a good job with Crystal now, no better or worse than most shows they air. They'd probably air all the completed episodes in a row and maybe run them again in a later timeslot. They wouldn't need to edit it. I don't see how they could screw it up.

How did Cartoon Network drop the ball? It's not like they were dubbing it or something.

They did nothing to promote SuperS after S ended and was even still using their old Toonami intro from the S broadcast.


Toonami usually changes them up after a certain amount of episodes had aired but as we see here, they did nothing and the dub was already halfway through it's broadcast since this was from the Lita/Tiger's Eye episode (147 or 140 of the old dub).

The intro was actually from the S rerun, which carried over to SS. The initial run of S episodes used the intro with DIC clips. They're also partially (completely?) responsible for the rush production on S/SS, causing two episodes to be skipped. There was also a fiasco with the Sailor Moon movies, and not properly securing the rights. They also premiered S in the middle of R, and didn't rerun the DIC episodes again once S premiered.

Once they started to get more anime on the block (Summer of 2000) they started to treat Sailor Moon like the redheaded stepchild. It barely got featured in promos.

to promote the premiere for S. Nothing like that was done for SuperS

Which quite possibly might have been simply a contract issue with DiC

Sailor Moon was fairly well promoted during S in the summer it was only around S’s second run thay Toonami ended their love affair with it

Maybe it would have seemed like a waste of time and money to promote an already popular show in it's last season? I mean the last season is quite a bit more fluffy in the way it looks maybe it didn't match their image. I don't think it was the end of the world I mean skipping 1 or 2 episodes because they didn't have the time to cover up boobies or something. I mean they skipped like 16 episodes of Dragon Ball GT just because they didn't seem exciting enough and didn't air them till like 2 years later I can't imagine any of it made any sense to viewers.. I think Toonami could have done a lot worse at least they didn't cancel the show I mean I can't imagine SuperS performed as well as other seasons did anyway it's not known as being everybody's favorite.

They did re run the DIC episodes when Sailor Moon returned in 2002. Even had new custom promos for it.. it seemed it was given its own block, not Toonami. it just didn’t last very long. I believe (if memory serves) it was abruptly canceled.

I know. That's what NJ_ said. They actually made two promos for S, and then reruns had the original promo slightly changed.

Probably not. The DIC dub returned to Cartoon Network (but not ToonamI) in 2002.

Why wouldn't they advertise a patch of brand new 39 episodes? They would make promos for any other series getting new episodes.

And now... you're justifying them skipping episodes. One of which was one of the most important episodes in the season. And skipping them would've have been an issue if Cartoon Network didn't rush their production. And it wasn't CN's call to skip most of Dragon Ball GT, that was Funimation. We have no idea how the ratings were for SuperS, but I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't that good due to 1. Lack of promotional material 2. Change in timeslot. Sailor Moon always aired at 4:00PM since 1998, and then in late 2000 got bumped down to 4:30PM.

And ultimately, they were responsible for the rushed production on the CWI episodes. We could've avoided a lot of sloppy editing, inconsistencies, and possibly some voice changes if they weren't trying to release 77 episodes in a span of a few months.
