I don't know if Yukie Sako herself made those drawings, but if yes, she did a good job here. I would call it even almost flawless:

Yukie Sako Inner Senshi character art

To see it compared, I even more dislike the Takahashi designs. Those heads, those mouths, those bubbles, those skirts...

Season 3 just had a higher budget, therefore the character design got better animated.
Akira's design was not that bad. However, our "talented" animators omitted many details again and they never fixed them in the BD release...

Those didn't even impress me back then, I thought they looked like they were drawn by a mediocre fan artist back then, and I still think they look like that...

Really. I really like the Crystal drawings. They look super nice and vibrant. Look at how sophisticated Rei-chan looks!!!! Look at Mako's hair and poses...

I love the one where Ami is speaking into her mic.

While they aren't like Naoko's designs that much, they have a elegant flair in their design that is very aesthetic. You can see their personalities nicely in this.

Unfortunately, Toei wasnt equipped to handle these designs with continuous effort & we got a mixed bag of stuff.

This style looks like requires a lot of detail all the time. I like it in a way. It gives the girls a refined look and separates them from modern mahou shoujo produced by Toei like Pretty Cure.

If anyone here doesn't like these designs I can understand and respect that also. Sometimes Yuki's art can be jarring but I think she was trying to emulate that model look that Naoko said inspired her.

YES! Especially in the various expressions you can see a lot of personality. And here are the problems: there A)nwas not enough material to show personality, based on the fact they used the manga as a storyboard. And B) the animators basically "preferred" drawing neutral, empty faces all the time. I remember many fans complaining about the lack of personality and the eyes without expression.

The thing I really hate about SMC3 is its "faded" color palette, and the omitted shadows. So the character faces lost their third dimension, and the characters almost blended into the background.

Wouldn't "washed out" actually be the term for that color palette? I wasn't fond with how they colored the theme park, it was like something you'd see in a baby's room.

You can take a look at the tuxedo to see how it was faded in the third season, and the red side of the cloak almost turned "pink".
When the shadow was done right, you could sense the depth of the characters. But in season III, it seems so flat.

The is no denying that I really love to watch episode 1 and 7 of season III (directed by Akira Takahashi), although I don't like his design, because they have their best character movement. (Remember Ribbon Buster?). But why they had to go that far, changing the design that much... And even though the design was simplified, there are some animators that couldn't followed it. (Mistress 9 episode).

When it was done right (episode 10)

And in the next episode:

Yeah, what I think happened was they spent so much of their budget on the openings, endings, transformations, speeches, attacks, and when they got to the Labyrinth their money was practically nearly gone, and they were like:

Animator 1: [BLEEP]! We don't have enough money left to make the animation good!!
Animator 2: Who gives a damn? We have the Sailor Soldiers on the cover, as long as we have those, people will buy it!!
All Animators: (nod) Yes!!

Keep in mind that some of the stockfootage was pretty much retraced from s1 and 2 as well as the old show. This is a technique known to save money. Then we had a very low framerate for the transformstions. I doubt they spend do much on it. They simplified and get rid of some details, shadows and depth, so they can keep using the Filipinos, without the drastic difference in animation capabilities. And nobody asked for 3 endings. They should have known their budget. And the Chibi Usa and Tuxedo Mask endings eere so unfitting and unnecessary.

Tuxedo's and Chibi-Usa's endings should be used for season 4, when the two characters are put in the center of the story.

They still wouldn't fit. These were very parodying songs... They should have been teleasedas image songs, not used as op/ed at all.

I'd have saved the Tuxedo Mask song for season 1, and scrapped Chibi-Usa's entirely, why not give one for the Inners too? They don't even have any ending songs nor eyecatches in the series!!

I think Tux ending was especally bad... The animation direction was hilarious most of the time.

The Inners in Crystal are nobodies - they're just the equivalent of those stormtroopers seen in Star Wars.
