In SMC3 case, they already started the production before announcing it. I wonder if it is true with SMC4...
They announced it as project, without being sure on the format, so after they announced Crystal "sequel" in January 2017, they announced six months after it will be two movies instead of TV show. Then last April they said at Animematsuri they are still working on the script and they didn't announce character designer until June, so they clearly haven't started production before announcing it. The same shitty move they did way back when they announced the new Sailor Moon anime in 2012 and it got delayed 3 times.

They should have delayed longer if they wanted a decent product. We have been waiting for 3 years anyway.

Most TV anime shows with the same amount of episodes are produced with virtually the same budget. What makes the difference is how the studio handles it and how they treat their stuff and how good they are at planning. The reason Kyoto Animation produces visually impressive shows is not because they spend more money on them, they spend more time. They plan well so they don't need to out source. Their animators are not freelancers but in house full time employees and they don't abuse them the way TOEI do as stated by many. Kyoto animation is just an example but the point is they are granted the same or comparable budget as Toei or Gonzo, but the difference in animation is day and night It is actually the opposite - if your schedule is tight more money are spend. You have to hire free lancers, pay overtime and Crystal budget simply run out on all these...
In such case, Toei was also saving money/resources by allocating less time to the Crystal project, w/ the resultant increased spending on outsourcing, OT, etc. still being covered by its existing budget, hence hurting its production quality, which they didn't care. Such treatment totally reflects their attitude to Crystal. :ninja:

I can only imagine with the blu ray fixes that Crystal became even an expensive show... I mean nobody did these for free and some episodes had about 70 - 90 changes.

Perhaps that's their marketing ploy to sell the discs all along, then - broadcasting the intentionally sub-par product at 1st, then releasing the fixed discs which've been given ample time & a big budget to produce.

But I suspect their plan flopped. I know many people who did not buy the Crystal discs because they didn't like what they watched online.

Then that could also be due to the poor quality of their staff - here it's not their production staff, but their management staff, i.e. the decision makers who made such plan, if it did exist. Maybe those execs are hired under a small package because Toei also doesn't have a sufficient budget for such senior positions, hence only being able to hire monkeys to run it. :quagmire:

who hires someone that draws a face like that? TBH this has nothing to do with tight schedule. this must have been it's on purpose.
It is probably an in-between frame.
However, the first 2 seasons lack a lot of in-between frame. Sometimes, an in-between frame last longer than a key frame.
In all of 3 seasons, sometimes I have to view frame by frame in Aegisub. There are a lot of pretty and stunning frames, but we never see them watching in a normal speed.

It's a little visible. But you can't unsee once you have seen.

Remember we didn't have the preview for this episode? And there are 44 people drawing key frames, 4 studios and a person doing in-between frames. They must have rushed very much.

Tight schedule means outsourcing. Outsourcing means hire someone that will do it fast and cheap. If the show was properly timed there would have no need of outsourcing.
For Toei, outsourcing doesn't just mean outsourcing the work, but the responsibility too, :oh: hence their apparent lack of monitoring their outsourced work.

But even those people who work for the studios who take over that outsourced work...don't they have to deliver a minimum of quality? I mean, the face is the part where you see imediately when it's off or sloppy drawn. Even if they only have a minute for one frame....a talented animator/artist would never draw such an ugly face, not even if she/he had 3 seconds only.

Sure, they are supposed to, but once you outsource something, you are on a dead line and you take whatever is finished,Considering the fact they released two episodes a month and there were times where they couldn't even put a preview for the next episode, I guess they were way behind schedule to be picky.

The people they are outsourcing to also have multiple projects and deadlines they are working on simultaneously.

The Chief AD is also responsible for correcting some of these frames... but with the crazy schedule and there being some issues behind the scenes with Kozue Komatsu replacing Yukie Sako as Chief AD... The project ended up being doomed.

Yeah, I faintly remember that she said in an interview that she couldn't take the pressure and how Toei basically screwed her up.Many people might hate her designs, but she is experienced as both animator and animation director, so it was clearly schedule issue.

When your schedule is tight there is not much you can do. I'm not justifying them though.
Rest assured that you're certainly not. lol That clearly can't justify them in any way, of course, as they're responsible for the tight schedule too - like what I've said above, their allocating lil time (which also translates to money, as time directly represents company resources) for Crystal has already shown how they treat it.
