but in the manga the inners use nothing for transformation like the outers
and they change it
...Which still doesn't refute my point that Crystal has not imported any of the items unique to the '90s anime. The Sailor Crystals are way more significant plot wise than the fact that in the manga's Death Busters arc, the senshi transform without any kind of stick... Like that's not even commented on in that arc.

Plus I don't think there's any kind of special nostalgia associated with the Crystal Change Rods (they're kinda ugly to begin with), considering there's no sign of any proplica release.

That’s not the same thing since the Star Power Stick was invented by the manga not the ‘90s anime.
I would have much rather they be given Lip Rods like the Outers in the 90s anime that is better then just transforming with nothing.

I found it rather cool at the time they didnt need an item to transform in the manga. All these flashy gaudy items were product placement anyway. The power comes within them.

I still like the transformation items better. No items seems rather bland.

So, just out curiosity, are contemporary TOEI movies as good as the old ones; for example, "the promise of rose"?

I am being realist and not having any expectations that this will be a masterpiece, but I am curious if TOEI makes its movies a little better than its anime shows.

The only way I see "no items" working is if they had hand gestures movements using their Sailor Crystals like in PGSM. I like them having unique activation poses and stuff.
They could take the crystal and hold them against their chest like Sailor Moon’s transformation sequence during Sailor Moon R, and twirl around.

I haven't watched them but Dragon Ball Broly looks quite nice and Pop In Q decent.

It really depends.

Some of their films have incredible quality and thought put into them (last year's Hugtto PreCure Film, the Broly Movie).

Some are on the same level of an average anime episode (the PreCure Spring films).

Some are Crystal Season 1 and Season 2 levels of disaster (Digimon Adventure Tri... Although that had six films and the first two weren't bad).

I have a question about animators. Isn't drawing characters in right way their job? How could they be offered the job in the first place if they draw off-model characters? (No matter they are in-house animators or freelance animators).

If they outsource that much it means they are really pressed by dead lines, so it just has to be done and the animatioj director has no time to go through and correct the art. There are key animators that are in charge of close ups and high lighted animations and key frames, but if they are really pressed with time they let in between animators work on these as well. With Crystal, especially season 1 and 2 they were so behind the schedule that they just went with whatever. With movies it a lot less likely so in most cases it is down to budget and the level of talent you can pay for to do it. Not every animator is equally skilled and has usually a different role.

Any inbetween animator should have basic drawing skills. There were too many unacceptable wonky faces in season 1+2. And no tight schedule can excuse that. Average talented people can draw a more or less decent looking anime face in less thena minute. And we are talking here about people who have been hired by Toei Animation, not some small independent studio from _____*.

* insert random countrythat is not know for having a tradition in good animation.

EDIT: Where can I share my thoughts about PGSM? I'm currently watching it for the first time and I'm almost addicted to it, never thought I would love it!

Watch the blu ray versions of the Sailor Moon movies and you will e surprised how ugly stuff suddenly got to be there with more detail in high definition available. These ugly shots are though distant shots and some low skilled animators worked on them and here they let everyone available do whatever they can. If you look you will see all these ugly faces are in season 3 as well, but the derpy design it becomes a lot less distinct to the on model shots and less distracting . Toei has always made some bad and cheap animation sequences, but with a better schedule they utilize their talent better. Te same stuff worked on season III, but they had better schedule and a lot less ambitious designs to work with.

Yesterday I just watched episode 11 again and surprised that there were many wonky frames. It was the group who did episode 2, while episode 2 was very decent in blu-ray...

And episode 2 was a joke on stream, they did a lot of fixing there for the blu ray. I wonder who was in charge of what to be fixed. Some episodes had alot of fixing, while others kept alot of wonly stiff for the blu ray. Some episodes have fixed frame that look worse.
I didnt reference the Crystal blu rays but the old movies blu ray where on high definition a lot of wonky frame pop up, mostly distant shots, and just to give an example of how if you let such animators do key frames...
