There were some episodes of the Cloverway dub that had VERY faithful scripts, and others (usually ones written by Lisa Lumby-Richards, sister of Dr. Tomoe's voice actor Jeff Lumby, and writer on most DiC episodes) that very much did not, and had terrible dialogue on top of that. The difference was pretty striking. Apparently, Optimum gave batches of episodes to different writers, each with their own style..
At least with DiC there appeared to be 3 writers. The one who would keep the general plot the same but change as much dialog as possible, the writer who would sometimes translate lines but other times change the dialog and then the writer who generally stuck to the Japanese script “A Friend in Wolf’s Clothing” comes to mind as a DiC era episode that was pretty much dead on.
As for the CWI era assuming Lumby is the bad writer we can at least pin Nathalie Gregoire (the only other credited writer for S) as presumably being the good writer. And whoever joined for SuperS as the “okay” writer
