Season 4 movies update: Sailor Moon Eternal - Delayed to 2021 (Part 1 on January 8th & Part 2 on February 11th)

Chiaki Kon: I think we all, including myself, have been long time fans of Sailor Moon and I’m incredibly honored to continue my work from [Sailor Moon Crystal] season 3 on into season 4 (the Sailor Moon Eternal movie). I really hope to bring all the fine detail in the manga to the big screen.

Kazuyuki Fudeyasu: A long time ago, a young girl once taught me that a star burns brightly in the hearts of us all. It is with great joy that I’ve been offered the chance to write Usagi’s story and I can’t wait to see it come to life on the big screen. My only hope is that the happiness I’ve been granted in this role is somehow conveyed to all of you who see it. I hope a star burns in the hearts of all you as well!

Kazuko Tadano: The first visual I worked on for this, and which was ultimately used for the movie’s announcement, as done in reference to a beautiful pose done by Ms. Takeuchi. It’s incredibly difficult work to bring the adorable features presented in both the 90s anime and the manga together into one work and I went through several mis-starts. I felt worried every time a new character was announced, but I’m always comforted to see all the lovely messages posted online [about the designs]. This is my second time working on the Sailor Moon series, but there are so many characters that are new to me that I feel like I’m starting fresh. I’ll do my best, and thanks for cheering me on!

It sounds like Tadano really put a lot of effort into making the designs, and I hope we get to see more of them soon.
Fudeyasu's comment makes it sound like they'll be referencing/foreshadowing the Stars arc a bit more in these movies outside of the title, too.

I would have loved if the conversation from the pamphlet was an actual show or commerical for the movie or something. Usagi and Luna are hilarious.

That would be actually nice, referencing Stars, to get a feel of a whole epos that is connected. I always found it lacking that in the differetn seasons in the 90s anime there was no mentioning of the past villains and that there was no connection. So in SMEternal they could, as I mentioned above, depict Beryl/Metallia when it comes to the fall of the moon kingdom. Every SM fan knows the villains of the first season/arc, since it is the one that has been reproduced and retold most of all. And at the same time, they could make some forshadowing for Stars, just my mentioning the term "stars". This will excite us fans in both directions.


I wonder how Tadano's "failed" concept designs look, I bet even those must look cool. I still hope, the final designs will be a bit less childish. In the background of the composer's video we see Moon and Chibimoon and their limbs are longer then on the released designs, especially ChibiMoon looks less bulky.

I also hope designs will look mature as S1 & S2.

They won't adjust the designs THAT much after they've already released the teaser to the public.

Chibiusa looks very similar to Takahashi's style.

But also abit less derpy.

I also wonder how they’ll look in the profile, because looks like they have no nose (except Sailor Mars). I’m just glad the weird head-shapes of Takahashi are gone.

Who is Iwata?

EDIT: I always found it a pity that we didn’t see Queen Serenity anymore in the 90s anime after she gave Usagi new powers in Sailor Moon R. Finally, in Eternal part 2, we’ll see her again, and Tadano-san is doing her character design again

Keiko Iwata was argably the best animator to work on Crystal. She was the one with very detail fabrics and hair even in season 3. All the gorgeous shots in episode 25 are done by her. She also did some lovely scetches of human Luna.

Oh right! She better be chief/key animator/animation director for the movies!

We all pray for her involvment.

If SME is good, let's hope that the 5th season will have the same quality. I don't hope for Keiko Iwata That's too much

I just hope that they stop mixing up NQS and Princess Serenity’s design whilst NOT changing her hair color from the correct version to the incorrect one.
i know that they’ll pander to the 90s crowd but I hope that it’s kept to a minimum.

I think NQS didn't appear at all in Dreams. But for Stars in 10 years I jope for silver hair.
