The "A world without Haruka isn't worth saving"

I did spend a lot of effort on her character research. I don't think Michiru was being serious here.

She did love Haruka a lot, even losing her cool when she was captured. But she also put her great good before anything. Like when the two was captured by Mistress 9 and took hostage, she didn't agree with Usagi to handle the Holy Grail. In that flashback episode also showed she was encouraging Haruka to embrace her senshi duty rather than let her stay safe. In Stars she was also very loyal to the princess, willing to die for it when she was taken hostage again.

I mean, she was all about "kill the innocent Hotaru to prevent world destruction" then suddenly went to " let the world burn without Haruka" that would make her a terrible person and hypocrite. Dragging her down to something like Serenity in PGSM. I don't think it's the writer's intention and her character though.

In this scene she did ask about "did the world end" after the attack, so I think she knew that doll was bluffing.

You can argue it makes her a terrible person but how the hell does it make her a hypocrite? She can value Haruka, the woman she loves/her soulmate, over the world and still place the greater good over individual lives that aren’t Haruka.

I think she was serious, even when she realized Haruka was one of the talisman holder she tried to stop Eudial from shooting her. So yes Michiru fully believes a world without Haruka isn’t worth saving.

But that's exactly how hypocrite works.

there are other ppl who treat Hotaru just like she treats Haruka(Professor Tomoe in the anime, maybe Chibiusa). And she asks them to give up their love for the greater good, when she does the opposite for her own?

I seriously don't think it's the case.

Eudial was trying to get the talisman for her own evil use, she's gonna use it to help destroy the world.

Was this rewritten for the Viz dub? I do not put so much attention on social inappropriate lines in entertainment, especially in shows prior late 2000s, but I am curious wether the new dub rewrote the line as the advertised accuracy got compromised some times.

I haven't looked, but I'm confident it wasn't. This is a very famous line in the original version, one that people would have screamed like crazy if they had taken out. Fans generally think it is romantic.

90's Neptune is a horrible hypocrite. As you mentioned, she pushed Haruka into accepting a duty that she knew she herself was struggling with. That's not love. That manipulation and coersion. "Oh, I have this disease so you have to have it too."

Toxic.

But here she's mostly making fun here. Otherwise the character would be very damaged.

Yeah she was struggling with but she was willing to help Haruka or even risk her life for her. I won't call it hypocrite.

I think I agree with Slowpokeking that she was joking around and not being that serious. It's hard to think that she'd risk the entire planet for one person when she basically tried to do the opposite in S (kill three people to save the world). Yeah she tried to save Haruka but emotions can do funny things and she didn't want Eudial to get the Talisman.

I was always puzzled by how out of character this line was for Neptune. However, based on what we know about the 90s anime (in and out of universe), I thought of these:

1) It could be that the episode's writer was looking for a bold line and got this. It sounds bold, but it does not go well with the character. But it could be an inconsistency that resulted from the fact that this episode is part of a special and the storyline's point was to show that the outer senshi also dealt with the Dead Moon Circus.

2) After having seen Pharaoh 90 and the Messiah, the outer senshi could tell that the ventriloquist was not of the same power caliber and it would not be possible that h would be able to destroy the world. It is a very far-fetched theory as there is no confirmation of this, but the outer senshi are depicted as being more mature and in for the kill, so it could be that they knew that the whole thing with the bottle was an empty threat, or at least a threat they could overcome. It is very high context, but the Japanese are a high-context culture, hence the non explanation of this.

I don't think it's that hard to get the meaning based on her overall characterization.

Michiru might be arrogant sometimes, but she was never such a low level character.

Actually Neptune didn't want her to accept the transformation wand because she when she was being attacked by said Daimon didn't want t derail her dreams and put her into this war. Of course Michiru struglled with this as did Haruka and really the Inners struggled with their duty. It isn't a disease it is them accepting their duty and fighting to save the world. What is the other alternative? Let the Death Busters win? As for Michiru and Haruka I do see them as conflicted individuals. At first in Sailor Moon S even though they had feelings for each other they didn't give into their feelings till later. Specifically that episode where Michiru and Haruka go on that ride and Haruka tells her she isn't letting her go home that night. Also Michiru wanted Haruka to if neccessary let her die to save the world. Now while I think that Haruka would sacrifice Michiru to save the world I don't think Michiru would in certain circumstances. Of course it could be that she just knew that said Lemures was lying and didn't have the power to destroy the world as he wasn't on the same level as a Pharaoh 90. Then again I would consider this action less evil then say you know Usagi giving Mistress 9 the Holy Grail. Bottom line is the characters are human and subject to many of the human frailities and issues we are.

Usagi didn't give the grail to destroy the world, she believed Hotaru is still there and chose to trust her and think this is the way to save the world.

No she didn't do it to save the world she thought it would save Hotaru not to different then what Michiru did and while Usagi didn't want to destroy the world she knew that Mistress 9 could pretend to be Hotaru when she wasn't and if Mistress 9 got the Grail she would call Pharaoh 90 to the world thus initiating the apocalypse. Now I am not saying that Usagi or Haruka or Michiru are bad people but they are human.

She thought Hotaru was there, she chose to believe her. She also didn't think Pharaoh 90 would surely destroy the world as well.

Yeah her action did cause a big risk, but it paid off and it was never her intention. Not to say Hotaru, even after Mamoru and Inner Four's death, she was still willing to save the world with her all strength. That said all, Michiru obviously wasn't serious as well.

Everyone knew that Pharaoh 90 would destroy the world. The Death Busters, the Sailor Senshi everyone involved in the conflict. That was the entire point of Mistress 9 acquiring the Grail was so that she could use it to call Pharaoh 90 from the Dimension where the Tau Galaxy was. She knew that Mistress 9 obviously could pretend to be Hotaru as she did so previously. Giving her the grail was beyond stupid and honestly she was lucky that the situation didn't end in the worse case scenario. I am not saying that Sailor Moon had bad intentions but they were stupid intentions and the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I imagine again that in Sailor Neptune's case that she doubted that the Lemures bottle could destroy the world. She most likely thought that such a low leveled monster didn't have the power to destroy the world as she figured that said Lemures Puppet wasn't on the same level as say a Mistress 9 or a Pharaoh 90 that they dealt with before.

I don't think Michiru was that serious. I think she likes to throw enemies (and others) for a loop to confuse them.

I still think it's an edgy line and a great way to tell the enemy, IDGAF.

You are right she does like to do that. She is great at mind screwing her enemies and also she is known for being a Femme Fatale and a Mata Hari in that she will in many instances try to use her feminine wiles and flirtation to charm men especially when she wants information. An example of this was her flirtation with Seiya in Sailor Moon Sailor Stars.

No it didn't, Saturn destroyed it before it could do any harm.

Sailor Moon chose to trust Hotaru, it was such "stupid" thing that caused her to wake up and break free, thus help saving the world.
