New thread time, if any of the mods merge this somewhere, please update the title.

Sailor Moon Eternal 2-Part Anime Film Project Opens in 2020

FINALLY

EDIT:

New head writer confirmed to be Kazuyuki Fudeyasu who has worked on select episodes of shows like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Head Writer: Yasuko Kobayashi), Land of the Lustrious (Toshiya Ono) & Pripara (Michihiro Tsuchiya).
The art style looks pretty good to me, a mixture of Kazuko's work on the original anime and of the manga. And they finally got the skirts correct! The only problem I have is...why is "Eternal" in the title, considering the Sailors don't get their Eternal forms until the end of the Dream arc? Either way, I don't care, I'm so excited

Was that the guy/girl who worked on Season 1 with that whole SHITtenou X Senshi pairing/death scene?
That was Yuji Kobayashi. And fortunately he got the boot as he couldn't do characterization nor storytelling for [BLEEP].

These designs were good depending on the animation director for a specific episode. Toei clearly didn't have enough budget to manage these designs and will never budget Sailor Moon to be able to.

Not to defend Toei, but I feel like people really need to lower their expectations for Toei.... also character designs don't necessarily need to be detailed to be good. It's all dependant on the animation itself.
And after all, weren't Hayao Miyazaki's character designs simple and not too detailed?

I still think those first designs were bad, the character's faces were odd with no expressions (why aren't they at least smiling?) and what's with Venus' legs, to name a few?

Also, this trailer sucked. It didn't show anything. It just revealed the character designs.

But at least now we know we're getting something.

They 100% just started animation on the movie LOL I wouldn’t be surprised if next year, they push the release date back another year like they did with the Dark Kingdom arc (which, even though they pushed back the release date, they were still completing the episodes just before airdate)

I’m HOPING the simpler character designs will mean smoother animation and better movement of the characters.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! Finally we got a confirmation that its still happening and its coming out next year!!

Second thing: the designs! Ok, they do look a little flat (at least Ami does) but they still are very well done. Im so glad they brought back Tadano and she didnt disappointed. Its like a modern take on 90s anime aswell as an obvious nod to previous Crystal designs. Cant wait to see them in animation. There's hope that Crystal...or now Eternal...will finally shine as it should have been from season 1. New writer sounds promising.

Happy Birthday Usagi and Chibiusa! And Happy Birthday to all Sailor Moon fans. Its been a very good one.

My wife came home just now and we saw it together. This are our thoughts combined. The characters look way too young, and these is clearly a major lack of detail on the designs. What we both like, however, is the eye shape - they are round a evoke manga/ 90s feels to it. But what I hate is the rosy cheeks, they were present in Seasons III designs as well as some gloss, which evokes to me a very early 2000s henatai/ fan service art to me and something Chiaki Kon is particularly fond of. Then - the noses or the absence of them, is at least for me very very moe like and jarring. I cannot imagine how the profile (side) shots would look like. Ami looks very off - the sloppy eyes they usually give to her in every iteration of the art look very ugly here. The hair on all of them is very basic anime style hair with solid color and no shadows. In general the designs lack shadows and because of that they lack depth. They can still look passable, if done right and the way TOEI released just one full body image, later zoomed in for a close up probably doesn't give the designs any justice. I hoped they will update the "animation" section of the site with actual designs they way they did for Season 1/2, but they still haven't done it, so my opinion is based solely on the released zoomed in, rough lined images. I find it just lazy, it doesn't look like the 90s, nor Crystal. It has some good elements like the eye color being not gradient, but the presence of these rosy cheek, like of noses, the strokes that are supposed to be eyelashes, the rough line work, the lack of shadows/depth and the wide mouths combined give me the wrong vibes. If these are the models they might only go downwards with the wrong animators, and they honestly already look like something I can draw. I hope to see actual design sheets and possibly a trailer very soon so I can see how they are going to look like in motion, but considering the key visual and the level of quality previous Crystal entries had to their key visuals, I am not happy with it. I am not the biggest fan of Akira Takahashi but his key visual look quite good and the actual show looked like a bad version of it. If this key visual is the highest level of quality this season/ movies are going to get... Mad, mad world.

The problem with the noses is how they're drawn from the front. As you can see with the other characters and the key visual poster, they're clearly visible.

I think Rei is turning her head very slightly, which is why it's more prominent.

Sailor Moon Eternal? Lol, they really want to distance themselves from the Crystal stink, don't they? Can't say I blame them. I'm more than happy to pretend that the movies are set in their own continuity.

The design look fine to me if a bit bland. I don't want to complain too much. I'm just happy that this will actually come out before I die of old age.

Actually I heard it was a reference to the last Sera Myu musical "Amour Eternal", but either way, couldn't blame them if Toei was trying to distance themselves from Crystal as much as possible.

I think the movies are still in the same continuity for the new Sailor Moon series though.

Why is everyone trying to make it look like as if they are trying to distance Crystal, when they say everywhere on the official site Crystal movie Eternal. Crystal is not part of the logo, but it is still part of the same product as they are referencing it.

They must have been happy when seeing "Crystal" disappearing from the logo, never reading the news referring it the four season of Sailor Moon Crystal.

We all know that this is the fourth season of Crystal.

However, they erasing the name Crystal seems to imply that they want distance Eternal from the previous seasons.

Not to mention that this is not going to be an adaptation chapter by chapter.

Hmmm.. I wonder if this could even be considered an alternate season 4 to the original anime? Retcon sequels are all the rage right now (Halloween 2018, Terminator etc) so I wouldn’t be opposed to a movie that works as both a sequel to Crystal and a replacement to SuperS that is more in line with the manga.

Or maybe they want to soft-revive 90s anime, and soft-skip Crystal...

Btw, what if they give it DB: Broly movie treatment?

At least they've got something new out on the Crystal Eternal project, & for that I'm happy. As for its overall quality, it's too early to draw conclusion from the lil info released so far, so we'll see. :)

Honestly, I like Eternal's designs better than season three. Last season's designs looked too juvenile and childish for my taste.

I can't wait to see Eternal Sailor Moon. Hopefully her wings will look less clunky. P-:
