I think I like Mars'....the whole 'haunted' bus thing.

Feel free to rank and comment on them.
Sailor Mars' first appearance in the series is my favorite too since her's is the most interesting one and she is my favorite character as well.

I like Mercury and Jupiter's first appearances because they underscore the idea that first impressions aren't always accurate. Ami seems snobbish and aloof but is actually friendly once you get to know her, and Mako seems thuggish but in reality is very protective and has a feminine side.

:usagi: "I was totally going to vote for myself"
:chibiusa: "Well I would have gotten 2 votes because Mamo said he would vote for me too"
:usagi: "Oh? I bet he's only voting for you because you suck up to him all the time. All you did was ground pound me by falling out of the sky then shoot me in the face. Only one of us knew I was bulletproof you know!"
:chibiusa: "Aren't you forgetting the important bit again Usagi?"
:usagi: "I knew you'd rub my face in it, how could Mamo vote for you when he knows... he knows..."
:chibiusa: "...what a good kisser I am! I had 885 years more experience than you aka-Sagi. It just goes to show Mamo has excellent taste!"
:usagi: "885 years of practising on your arm in the mirror doesn't count! I'll have you know I'd even been kissing Mamo in my sleep"
:chibichibi: "Chibi Chibi?"
:usagi:/:chibiusa:: "Only in the manga Chibi Chibi! So your votes only count as half"

I'd normally pick :rei: but there's that one thing Crystal did right with :ami: because she had that one power she only used once with her Shabon Spray casting an illusionary double. Loved that they incorporated that in Crystal Season 2 against her fight with Berthier with a twist.

For the 90's anime, I'd definitely say Jupiter's. Unlike the others, she actually burst in the fight against the Youma as a baseline human and lifted him over her head without even a second thought. Can you imagine what type of melee attacks she would have unleashed without a transformation pen?

I'd say Venus. We've seen posters of her and ads of her throughout the first season, that it was cool seeing her finally make her appearance to the Senshi.

Mercury’s in anime and manga, Jupiter’s in PGSM.

Somehow the cliche "See, she’s the genius/psychic/suspicious/famous girl! Let’s gossip about her so that both the main character and the reader can get to know her in a "casual" way", that started to be even more predictable in the next chapters, worked in favor of the story. There was a slight possibility of the "cold genius" being an enemy.

Mars’ "haunted bus" story is… silly, even compared to other manga chapters/anime fillers. Maybe I’d accept it as Jupiter’s introduction, but the elegant [manga] Rei deserved something better.

Jupiter’s introduction both in anime and manga felt like Naoko and anime writers respectively just had to awaken her somehow and come back to the previous plot as soon as possible.

The introduction of Venus was well written, but the later sudden change in Minako’s character ruined this in the anime. Also, in both versions, Sailor V(enus) suddenly stopping her superhero activities after joining the team makes me question the "ally of justice" part

Why would it be more suitable for Jupiter?? After all, it's Mars that is the mildly creepy/eerie one.

It’s just my opinion, but the bus story was never creepy for me, more like… goofy? I’d love to see a more serious one for Mars, for example: Jadeite targeting the shrine to steal energy of the praying people, Rei trying to defend it even though she has no power against him yet, then being awakened as Mars.
Why Jupiter? Probably because of her cameo appearance in Sailor V, somehow I like the idea of the rest of the team meeting her in public transport

Oh what happened during the cameo?

In the manga, Crystal, and to an ever-so-slightly lesser extent PGSM, Rei's and Mako's introductory stories aren't that different, both involving mass disappearances tied to an urban legend. I agree with PinkSugarSenshi that the haunted bus story is kind of weird and goofy (though not as much as PGSM's helicopter face monster), so I think the ghost bride story of Mako's intro story is more effective. Venus doesn't really have a strong intro story in the live action series because we see her in action as Sailor V from scene one, but I think her first appearance in the anime is pretty cool (and I like it more than the manga counterpart). I think the PGSM version of Ami's is hands down the best (I've always hated the "could she be an enemy?!?!" aspect of her intro story in the manga and anime).

So.... I'd say my overall favorite first appearance is a tie between PGSM Mercury and Crystal Jupiter.
