Yes she definitely made the 90’s anime for me. The eyes, the clothes, the expressions the hair! Ugh, beautiful. I wish they could have brought her back for Crystal. I’m not even sure what she is up to nowadays? I never really hear anything about her post Tutu, which is such a shame because she is clearly a very skilled character designer.

The last thing she did that I remember was she was character designer for the anime version of the Haruhi Suzumiya spinoff, The Disappearance of Yuki-chan Nagato at studio Satelight and her designs got some heat from Haruhi/KyoAni fans despite the manga version of said spinoff being different from Haruhi too.

As for most recent, the last thing I recall is she joined Toei's Butt Detective show in 2018 as an Animation Director, this had some fans upset because this was while Hugtto Precure, Junichi Sato's season, was still airing.

A quick check of wiki reveals she apparently did the character design for a 2020 show called Somali and the Forest Spirit. It doesn’t really look like her ‘signature’ style, though ( Even though that could have completely changed in almost 20 years since Tutu..)

I'm pretty sure Somali is based off a manga, so they're not really her designs (although you can sort of see it in some characters with thicker eyelashes.) The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan was probably the most recent show to showcase her style, considering the manga's designs were pretty bad which gave her more leeway for interpretation. Mikuru in particular screamed Itoh in that show.

She was also the animation director for Pop in Q. I'm guessing the producer for Hugtto Precure wanted Toshie Kawamura back for that season's designs, since I remember an interview where she said he asked her (she wasn't planning on doing another season until she heard that Junichi Sato was directing, lol.)
As cool as seeing Itoh work on SMCrystal or Precure would be, she's probably either not interested or nobody's asked her. Precure's pretty taxing to work on since it's a year-long show, and Crystal would require her to practice her old style before adding in aesthetics from the manga and top it off with a modern look like Tadano had to.

Honestly, I would rather Itoh never touch Crysternal with a ten foot pole. Can you imagine? One side of this Toxic Fandom would rip to her shreds for not breaking every rule of anatomy to chase after Naoko's vision. The other half would crucify her if she doesn't faithfully copy every little detail of her designs from the '90s. Animator's style change overtime and adjust to what modern anime looks like, and unless she's heavily involved as an animation director, there's no guarantee that the animation would even really stick to her vision either...

It'd be a nightmare lol.

Although I certainly wouldn't complain if it looked anything like this drawing of Haruka from 2017.

This art is so perfect... I would sell my soul to get it.
I agree with what was said: Itoh is too precious to work on Crysternal, hald of fandom would criticize her for doing same art as in the 90's, and the other half for NOT doing exactly the same art, it would be hell for her :( Protect her at all cost !
By the way Takeuchi seems very fond of Tadano but never had a word for Itoh. I think she said in one of the liner notes that she thought Harukua and Michiru's weren't close enough to what she draw, if I remember correctly ?

She said she was a bit sad / surprised that the anime made Haruka and Michiru kind of cold compared to how they are in the manga, but I don't remember her saying anything about their character designs.
Were they not cold in the original too, though? I guess they were slightly more callous (the end of S comes to mind) but I would hardly say they were warm towards the inners in Naoko’s version, either. At least not during Infinity.

Someone posted an interview here last year (I think it was originally in German?) with Takeuchi and Tadano. Takeuchi mentioned that she and her assistants had a discussion over which animation directors they liked the most. Tadano won first place naturally, and Itoh came in second. Tadano went on to gush a bit about her work and episodes 24 and 31 (Takeuchi chimed in agreeing with how good they were.)

As far as I know, Takeuchi hasn't really mentioned any other animators. Tadano's art probably holds a lot of sentimental value to her since she was the first one to translate her art into animation and create the iconic 90's anime style. In the same interview she said something along the lines of "a lot of manga artists end up not liking the look their anime adaptations take, but I think Tadano did an amazing job."

As for Haruka and Michiru, I think she was referring to their personalities when she said they weren't what she envisioned.

Interesting that Tandano was everyone’s top choice. I guess she does represent the ‘iconic’ look which is synonymous with the show now. I personally think that Itoh improved on what were already classic designs by giving them a more detailed flair but honestly both are top tier and it really comes down to your preference

Funny that they reference episode 24 and 31. Ironically wasn’t Itoh AD for both of them? lol

I think I saw that in the French version published by Glenat in the 90’s but it was maybe a mistranslation then ? I don’t remember in which volume was this liner note :/

I can't seem to find Naoko's remarks about Uranus and Neptune, but I remembered that she included an illustration by Ikuko in volume 10 of the manga, so they must have gotten along if nothing else.

I think what I said comes from a mistranslation on the first French version (sold mine long time ago so I can’t check). It’s from original vol 12 manga liner note, and she talks about how surprised she was that UraNep were a little rude in the anime version. in the French version, but my memory may be wrong, they translated it as if Uranus and Neptune weren’t supposed to look the way they are (graphically). I just checked the Japanese version and this french translation was clearly wrong, sorry for the mistake.

Some never before seen concept art of Super Sailor Moon recently surfaced: So uh, putting Itoh aside for a moment:

Episode 103: Also, the goldfish scooping booth was originally a shooting gallery. We were supposed to see Chibiusa throughout the festival, disguised in a yukata and rabbit mask, causing trouble for Usagi. We'd see Luna-P in a booth selling masks. Later, Luna-P would turn into a firecracker to distract the daimon, then Chibiusa would appear, removing her mask and yukata to reveal Sailor Chibi Moon.
Those gags really scream Ikuhara. Especially the Luna-P in a booth.

Episode 166: During the ending scene, Chibiusa was supposed to stay stubborn until Pegasus finally flew away. Then she was to run after him, shouting his name. VesVes, watching this happen and feeling sympathy, then created a magical bridge to the sky for Chibiusa to run up, giving her the chance to tell Pegasus her true feelings.
The final version of 166's ending isn't bad, but this would have been great. It's clear why they had Sailor Moon running up a long staircase now, it would have been in parallel to this!

Episode 198: Usagi's dream at the beginning was originally meant to be a flashback to when Chibiusa returned to the future back in episode 173.
That explains why she's in Usagi's dream at least. It was nice to see her one last time either way.

When Uranus and Neptune die, they were supposed to have dialog making it clear that Pluto and Saturn understood what they were doing, showing the unique bond the four had.
It was pretty clear in the final version, imo. They're obviously upset for real up until Uranus and Neptune attack them and they make eye contact with each other. Only then do they talk about fighting back before just standing there with their eyes closed. I still wish they somehow managed to illustrate their bond some other way though.

I can't really tell much, but I've heard that Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon even had some settei / character design sheets done at one point. (I edited this message because I don’t want my source to get trouble for this).
That doesn't sound too surprising considering she's in the scripts from episodes 174 to 182. Her cut was probably (relatively) late in development. There might even be settei for Sailor Cosmos somewhere out there.

So, Eternal Fuku we see in Eternal and Heavy Metal Papillion were supposed to be included in the Sailor Stars 90s anime.

And Sailor Galaxia was supposed to be Sailor Chaos as well which ends with her likely being sealed - from materials collection.

Neherenia Redemption and Galaxia being Chaos might be good.
