In the shadows throwing roses at you

After reading this thread carefully, I have to ask this: Do I have to be forced to like Viz (even though the new dub isn't really working out for me) and force to hate the old dub just to fit in with everyone?
absolutely not if you like the old dubs then enjoy the heck out of them, I can say I like both while acknowledging both have their shortcomings [for example I prefer CWI Tomoe's voice over Viz version and I prefer many of Viz Voices over Dic/Cloverway except for a few ]

your free to like whichever version you want if people don't like it tell them "deal with it" it's their problem not yours, never be ashamed or feel like you have to follow the popular opinion even if you don't agree just to feel accepted - your being a sailor moon fan in general in it of itself should fill that roll

@Prince Rose , @FloraKiraraHime , @Serena-Hime , Thanks for your kind words. Because back then when the Viz dub first came out and I was stating my opinion on it, I got picked on and insulted for my opinions and was being forced to do that most of the time. I really hated the toxic fanboys who told me that my opinions didn't matter. But now that I joined, I have to say...thank you for clearing my conscience so I can truly say how I feel about which dub and raw voice I prefer.

Yeah, idk what sort of question even was that. XD If you love old dub, that's great, that's just your preference. I'm happy that some people love it. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions.

Sometimes I see these sort of questions and I have no idea where they even came from. (For example, I recently saw somebody ask online whether they can still be sympathetic towards some character. I haven't said anything, but my reaction was just "?????????? Why would you even ask that? Why do you need other people to say 'yes'? I don't understand."

I like what I like, even when people constantly say I shouldn't like children's shows, for example. Well, I love some children's shows (Sailor Moon, for example, but also lots of Disney), and that won't change no matter what anyone says. It'll change only when I decide myself that I'm bored of them or that my taste has changed.

Your opinion is your subjective opinion. Other people can neither validate nor invalidate that. :):chibichibi::chibiusa:

And if other people insult your opinions, ignore them. If they really insult you and you're feeling vindictive, tell the mods.:mihiru:

Reading is an incredibly important life skill, and I hope you are one day able to acquire it.
I've read all of your wrong, ignorant statements on this thread, don't worry.
Thanks for your concern though!

I know that I can sometimes get a bit ~intense~ with my critiques.
More like just wrong.

Japanese version of Sailor Moon had its main character clearly have an issue with gay
people.
She was notably attracted to Haruka, and never had an "issue" with anyone's sexuality. There is only one episode in which she censors Makoto's interest for Haruka, in the same way she censored Rei's interest for Mamoru.
That scene was obviously meant to reinforce Usagi as a jealous, immature girl. She censored Rei/Mamoru's relationship because she liked Mamoru, not because she was genuinely bothered by the age-gap.
In the same way, she censors Makoto because she likes Haruka too, not because she's genuinely scandalized by her gender. It's not even difficult to get it.
Gay characters in Sailor Moon are never depicted differently because of their sexuality, nor they are treated differently by other characters.
You cannot claim an entire show to be "problematic/homophobic" over 3 scenes, while completely ignoring the context of said situations.
At no point the show was homophobic, and Usagi's scene with Makoto was clearly meant to highlight Usagi's flaws, and reinforce her "jealous, silly" nature, rather than make a political statement on homosexual relationships.
If you want to see a political statement on gay-romance in this series, you can always check any episode featuring Haruka/Michiru; Zoicyte-Kunsite. They're plenty of them.

ON TOPIC: American dub for this series is awful, no offence.

As for the person asking if they should stop liking it simply because others don't...
Your personal preferences should, generally, never be affected by others' opinions. If you enjoy the dub, then keep enjoying it, regardless of how others feel about it.

I like the old dub of how it introduced me to the world of manga and anime. Yes it did deviate from the original but you have to take it in terms of censorship. If they didn't censor it, then it wouldn't have aired for the younger generation. I also loved the voices of Makoto and Minako

She was notably attracted to Haruka, and never had an "issue" with anyone's sexuality.
She was attracted to Haruka when she thought Haruka was a boy. Which you know is fine since Usagi is presented as mostly heterosexual. She's allowed to lose interest in someone she thought was a boy when she's really a girl but don't pretend that's evidence Usagi doesn't have hang ups with same-sex relationships.

Also she gagged at the mention of Zoicite and Kunzite's relationship in the first series memorial so saying she never had an issue with anyone's sexuality is plain incorrect.

There is only one episode in which she censors Makoto's interest for Haruka, in the same way she censored Rei's interest for Mamoru.

There's really not much evidence in the 90s anime that she liked Haruka in a romantic/sexual sense after the one episode. She was constantly reminding Mako that Haruka was a GIRL. Saying that behavior isn't homophobic is straight up denial.

Gay characters in Sailor Moon are never depicted differently because of their sexuality, nor they are treated differently by other characters.
2 of the 3 gay male characters are portrayed incredibly flamboyantly and feminine so that's not even true. The one same-sex attracted male that doesn't act like an over the top stereotype is bisexual given his comments toward Rika and Beryl so there's that.

Haruka and Michiru are treated in a typical one has to be the man, one has to be the woman relationship.

The mere act of featuring gay characters isn't a political statement.

I know being critical and realizing maybe something you like is problematic is hard af but it's okay.

Technically, even Zoisite is bisexual if you take his comments in one of the audio dramas about dating female middle school students as canon to the anime, not to mention his being paired with Mercury in the PC-Engine game (and I think Another Story as well?).

As for Haruka and Michiru, I don't really have a problem with the butch-femme dynamic of their relationship, especially when there are so many other (suggested, if not explicitly canon) same-sex female relationships in the series that don't follow that, so it doesn't feel like the metaseries is saying SSFR have to have a butch and a femme. Rather, I dislike how they don't get to kiss, whereas the heterosexual couples do, which creates an inequity in their portrayal. And while perhaps at the time the anime wouldn't have gotten away with a same-sex kiss (though I sort of doubt that), the same obviously isn't true for the manga. If Uranus could assault-kiss Usagi, why couldn't she lovingly kiss her actual girlfriend? Additionally, I feel like the anime weirdly sexualizes Haruka and Michiru's relationship. They have so much sexual banter/so many double entendres (which could just be their personality and be perfectly harmless, fair enough), but then there's Usagi's introduction to the S episode revealing Haruka's (and Michiru's) backstory where she seems to make a sexually suggestive remark and then scolds viewers for having perverted thoughts? (From Viz's subs: "Haruka said that she and Michiru [were] more than lovers... Could it be that... (shrieks) Oh my... Hey, cut that out! You probably shouldn't be imagining such things!") I don't know... It's really strange to me. Of course, Haruka and Michiru are generally portrayed as having the most (emotionally) mature relationship, and they affectionately hold hands all the time at least, so I'm certainly not saying their relationship/depiction is heinous or anything; but there are a few minor issues that I think are worth pointing out.

To me, the way the Japanese dub made gays, it made certain dialogues and context sound homophobic to the gay characters. It just sounds that way to me. I mean I know nothing should be censored, but there are times when the context of homophobics within the original version just make me cringe

The 90s anime erased the Starlights' gender identities as well by having them physically change sex, and this was clearly done so that Seiya could be a love interest for Usagi while keeping her straight.
Explain all the subtext and she gets with Rei then??? Usagi even in the 90’s anime, despite her rather insensitive homophobic comments is very much not straight and is coded as an in-the closet bisexual/pan sexual.

Even if she weren’t coded as bi before based on her interactions with Rei (it’s worth noting since Reisagi was one of Ikuhara’s OTPs ofc he wouldn’t allow for Usagi to be made straight) this theory still wouldn’t line up because we have an in-series example of the very much turned straight 90’s anime Minako immediately disregarding Yaten (and Haruka back in S don’t forget) once she finds out about their sex-changing identity. It’s notable that we don’t see Usagi immediately writing Seiya off once she learns that they’re also Sailor Star Fighter. (In fact she doubles down when the Outers come to pressure her and outright admits that “she loves Mamoru but has other people she loves too.”

You can also make arguments about the changes to Rei's character, her dynamic with Minako,
Replaced with the Reisagi dynamic, the 90’s anime simply played around with different ships compared to the manga.

and the dynamic of Chibiusa and Hotaru's relationship
And yet Chibi-Usa still remains bi in the 90’s anime considering her crush on Tamasaburo when she thought he was a she.

Is it problematic that characters who were clearly queer-coded in the manga like Hotaru and Minako are made straight in the 90’s anime? Perhaps, but they make up for it by turning characters who did appear to be straight in the manga (Ami, Mako, the queer male villains + Grandpa Hino and maybe Mamoru) queer in the 90’s anime so I’d say it all evens out by the end.

In reality the 90’s anime added way more to the queer character count than it erased. (adding Ami, Mako, Kunzite, Saphir, Demande, Mamoru, Grandpa Hino the original character Fiore vs erasing Minako, Tigers-Eye, Hawks-Eye, Hotaru and possibly Nephrite into cishet. That’s 8-9 characters coded queer who weren’t in the original manga vs 5 who’s queerness from the manga was erased.)
I've criticized Naoko repeatedly concerning her messiness regarding queer characters, from her complete under-development of Haruka and Michiru's relationship
This is only because she shipped Haruka with Usagi in the manga, nothing to do with her needing to do better in the area of queer female representation. Again, it’s simply a matter of Naoko shipping different couples compared to Ikuhara.

to the transphobic mess that was the final chapter of Toki*Meca.
I have yet to read this work of her’s, tell me, what makes it transphobic? I don’t mind spoilers. This is kinda surprising to hear since while I knew Naoko seemed to have hang-ups regarding queer cis men, she seemed generally trans-positive or at least friendly. After all she’s the one who made her own Haruka genderfluid and I’m pretty sure all 3 of the Amazon Trio are meant to be the trans variety of the “Ok*ma” term. Even Nephrite and Zoisite both crossdress in the manga and could potentially be read as trans.
