So we all know that anime in general has an issue with minors being sexualized and it can get excessive with lolicon. With that said, I'm sure many of us have seen well..fanart of the show, which sometimes goes NSFW, so I thought this was worth discussing. Do you find it problematic find the cast, sans Hotaru/Chibiusa attractive. I ask because they are canonically underage but at the same time, they are drawn like young adults like in many anime such as Saint Seiya(I think in this chapter when they were mothers, they looked more or less the same) and its like a drawn version of casting adults to play teens. I mean, if someone mentally ages them up or ages them up for drawing/fanfic/ignores the ages, they have, then I wouldn't have an issue myself but if someone gets off on the age then I'd raised eyebrows. So overall, how do you feel on this topic?

no I think they were design to be beautiful
plus I was like 9 when I first saw the 90s series in '95 so in my mind they are older than me I don't see em as their series age I see them always as 8 years older than myself
but that's just my personal view
as long as their portrayed as in your mind or fanart drawn as adults or written as such in a fic I thinks it's ok
like for example I can say I have a crush on Usagi but I could easily mean Neo Queen Serenity

How does Neo Queen look compared to Usagi?
she looks more sophisticated mature experienced regal and is perpetually at age 22 while Usagi looks like a teen [in my opinion looks like a later age teen than her canon age]

the way the senshi are drawn in the 90s anime look 4 years older than their canon ages in my opinion so it's easy for the average viewer to put the ages as an after thought just going on the looks alone with no info

Are they really drawn like that in the 90s and crystal cuz I hear some say they have young faces
I'd say neo queen looks older than 22, like Setsuna, more mid 20s

I can agree about Neo queen looking older than 22
if we're talking Crystal the art is different compared to the 90s but I would say they look age appropriate in crystal season 3 with the change in art style

Daily reminder that Ikuhara was creepy.
that reminds me I know he did S but I forget if he stuck around for SuperS

Unpopular opinion, I don't think it's problematic to find the characters attractive if you're under a certain age, but if you're a legal adult admiring these characters for their physical attributes, then I honestly can't say it's healthy.

That doesn't mean that you can't like the girls that way; they're fictional characters, not burdened with the baggage of real teens. However, these are 14-year-olds running around. They're kids. Even if you argue they have physically developed they still clearly have the mindset of younger teens. It would seem gross to look at them any way other than a platonic possibility.

A few things I was wondering about:
1. First, in 90s at least do they seem older
2. Well, I was talking more like in an aesthetic way. I mean, someone liking a young mindset is weird but I just meant design wise and if they age them up for their fanfic or whatever, how does that sound? I mean, isn't like the whole dawson casting thing in that sense
3. What do you mean other platonically? Like attracted to the mindset?

A few things I was wondering about:

  1. In the 90's they do seem older, especially when they transform, but that doesn't mean they are older. Making them seem older is part of the male gaze which permeated the old anime.
  2. I don't like the idea of aging them up for a fan idea so they can have "good times" for two reasons. First it's disingenuous, because it just provides an excuse to create what you want to create for their underage selves. If you're going to go that route, then commit to it with all the baggage it carries. Given that Sailor Moon is a kids show, that's a lot of baggage. Second, the age of the characters is important to their character. If as a fan you're going to produce something that requires aging up the characters, why not create new characters based on the old ones instead? If you're going to twist and break canon that much, you might as well make an original work. Why draw fan porn when you can draw original porn? That doesn't mean I disapprove if you tell a story in which aged-up characters engage in adult activity as necessary part of a narrative, but creating fan works that age them up for that sole purpose implies a creator knows what they're doing is wrong and raises the age as a hasty cover.
  3. I mean if you are attracted to the mindset, personality, and even attracted from a pure aesthetic (for instance, I like ChibiMoon in part because her signature color is pink and I like the color pink) that is one thing. I mean surely you know someone you immensely get along with but would never think of dating. But given that this place once had a healthy hentai section, there are plenty of people who want to do more than admire the girls. It's one thing if you're around that age or younger, and of course, vestiges of old crushes are always going to be part of a psyche; I'm not going to judge you if the stray thought a girl produces an involuntary reaction. But it's another thing if you're significantly older than the characters like I am and expressing (not just having, but giving voice to) fantasies of exchanging bodily fluids with them or intimate contact. Even if you mentally age them or de-age yourself, the fact remains that you're attracted to a 14-16 year old girl and you're an adult. Putting her in an "adult" body doesn't change this. That doesn't mean you need to be institutionalized, but it is a sign of having unresolved issues. Again, you're not talking about a 22-25 year old who is in peak vitality and is a legal adult but still has an immature mindset. You're not even talking about someone 18-21 who is a legal adult but treated as provisional adult in which there'd be a massive power imbalance. You're talking about a child who just got out of puberty. That ain't right.

This is what those idiots of my classmates told me when I had a crush on Usagi back in 1995/96. I was 8/9yo.
What's funny is that, growing up, I realized I was right to get a crush only on..drawings.

My opinion here is: who cares what their fantasies are. Don't even ask.
I'm with you there

it depends on how you think of them.

You like their beauty but also respect their character, wish them to have more spotlight/character development, that's fine.

You wanted to look at those hentai stuff, that I would say meh, but still not a huge deal.
