It seems like Usagi was always getting slapped throughout the series (I think Mamoru was too in S).
-Mars slapped Moon in Classic
-Mercury slapped Moon in Classic
- Uranus slapped Moon in Stars

Not sure if there are anymore, but yeah, what do you think?

She also gets slapped by Galaxia.

Do I think they were all necessary? I guess the ones from the Classic season were but other then that they seem a bit excessive.

I wouldn't say they were necessary but this was a weird thing 90s anime loved to do all the time for some reason. I remember they had slapping in early episodes of Pokemon and Digimon too but it seems to have been largely phased out in modern anime.

That "slapping culture" in anime can be traced back to as early as the 70s, if not even before that, e.g. there's a famous slapping scene involving the lead character & his superior in the very 1st Gundam series. :)

all the slaps were justified

sometimes Usagi is hysterical and needs to snap out of it - cooler heads prevail
as far as I recall none of the slaps [senshi to Usagi ] were for malicious reasons

at least sm ain't like Dynasty P-:

Luna also attacked her with her claws during the first season. All commoners rebelling against the Queen is always something to be seen under a positive light.

I think only Ami was really justified I mean they were dropping like flies and they could all feel it would be the end. I mean Rei could have just shaken her or yelled at her it wasn't really necessary to hit and Uranus well I think she was just being a jerk shes too violent in my opinion I didn't appreciate her punching Star Fighter either.

I've always thought the slaps were unnecessary girlhate and bullying on the part of the Guardians and undercut any theme of friendship. "You're unreasonable so I can hit you." That teaches people that you have right to put your hands on someone if you don't like how they are acting. Normalizing abuse is never okay. Plus, there is no guarantee someone is going to listen to you if you smack them. Slap me and I'll go down, but even as wimpy as I am, I will go down swinging.

People should keep their hands to themselves.

Rei slapping Usagi in the first series was more out of frustration and contempt I think than trying to snap her out of hysterics.

I'm pretty sure slapping people to get them out of being hysterical is a practice that has fallen to the wayside, even in Japan.

Rei lost her boyfriend to both Usagi and the Dark Kingdom, and Usagi didn't even think about trying to save him or making sure his sacrifice wouldn't be in vain. Sor-ry if she lost her temper.

Ami needed to snap Usagi out of it. Makoto had just died and Usagi was screaming at Queen Beryl to take the crystal. Which, you know, would have ended the world and made everything they had done up until then (including Makoto's death) be in vain.

Haruka needed to play the part of a villain with Michiru. What happens if Galaxia sees them going easy on them?

There's a difference between losing your temper and physically attacking someone, and that was far from the only instance of Rei using force to get her way. I can definitely understand her anger, but she crossed a line.

Ami didn't need to snap Usagi out of her state of mind with a slap. If Usagi isn't listening, you can't make her listen, and it's not as if Beryl was going to call off the DD Girls.

In both of those instances, those two only got away with it because Usagi is a "crybaby" and the blame-the-victim mentality. Being assaulted by your own teammates is inexcusable.

What if Usagi had gotten seriously hurt? Remember, they were in battle mode. All any enemy would need to do is let the group pick itself apart.

What if Usagi had hit back? I mean, yes, she is a pushover and the essence of purity, but in Season 1 especially, she was still a very flawed and human girl. What if she had enough and decided to use the Crystal on them?

And about Haruka, given that she robbed Usagi of her own brooch, she's so antagonistic at times I don't know if she's "playing" evil or if she actually is.

Worth pointing out that DiC dub cut out both slaps (well only kinda sort of with Raye slapping Serena but it was weirdly handled there) and it didn't impact the story or tone. They just told Serena that "Jupiter wouldn't want that" and Amy offered to go on her own.

And about Haruka, given that she robbed Usagi of her own brooch, she's so antagonistic at times I don't know if she's "playing" evil or if she actually is.
Didn't she straight up threaten to kill Usagi? I definitely remember her making a soft threat in the Cloverway dub "You'll regret it"

They were in life-or-death situations. Usagi saying they should just give up is more than just being a crybaby, it's going to get them killed and the world destroyed. She wasn't any more of a victim than the rest of the girls in both scenes. Not including, you know, the people who actually got injured/killed. In Ami's case, they didn't have the time to sit her down and talk her out of her it. Nobody is invalidating her emotions, but you need to put your feelings aside in that kind of scenario or else you and everyone you care about will die.

What if Usagi had gotten seriously hurt? Remember, they were in battle mode. All any enemy would need to do is let the group pick itself apart.
It was a slap. Not Fire Soul or bashing her in head with the mini computer. Usagi was the one actively tearing the team apart by trying to get everyone to quit.

Would she do that? The whole reason she's in that state to begin with is because people she cared about got hurt/killed. Someone who does that yet goes around and vaporizes them with the crystal would make for an awful main character.

And about Haruka, given that she robbed Usagi of her own brooch,
Didn't she straight up threaten to kill Usagi? I definitely remember her making a soft threat in the Cloverway dub "You'll regret it"
She didn't believe in Usagi's strength and didn't want her getting involved anymore. Also, she just said "you'll die." If you actually look at all her actions in context it's pretty obvious that she was trying to protect Usagi in a misguided manner.

she's so antagonistic at times I don't know if she's "playing" evil or if she actually is.
Right. Characters can't be flawed or ever do anything wrong or else they're evil and abusive monsters.

By slapping they aren't putting their feelings aside. Instead they're prioritizing their own feelings at the expense of hers. It's not just as selfish as a meltdown but even worse because it's imposing one's will on another.

First of all, even a shove can kill, and a slap can EASILY cause a concussion.

Furthermore, a physical attack is a physical attack, period. The only people who should be physically attacking heroes are the bad guys. If you're attacking, then you're the enemy.

Because people react differently from being hit.

Some people like Usagi are convinced by force and comply.

Other people, like myself, would start fighting back, possibly to the point of death if emotions are heightened. Anyone who puts their hands on me in a situation where it is impossible to escape has forfeited their life in my eyes, as I have no way of knowing they won't stop after the first blow, and even if they do stop after the first blow, I'm not going to be cognizant of them stopping and will continue to swing back until they are no longer a threat, and in my frame of mind, I likely would perceive their existence as a threat. So, yeah, if Sailor Mars had hit me and I had the presence of mind to fight back, I'd have probably tried to kill her, as well as Sailor Mercury when she did she same. Each would have proved she didn't care about me anyway by hitting me and might as well be the enemy.

To paraphrase the Snickers commercial, you're not you when you're angry.

So you protect a hero by taking away their ability to access their powers?

Right. Characters can't be flawed or ever do anything wrong or else they're evil and abusive monsters.
They can do wrong....as long as it is acknowledged that their evil wasn't necessary.
