Crystal's animation is better. There. I said it. Cry heresy and burn me at the stake if you must, but I feel like the animation is more...vibrant. That said, the proportions could have been done better. But the movement itself flows better in Crystal.

(...No really, do these girls have anorexia?) Let me give you an example. Look at the Masquerade Ball episode. Usagi's dress is a lot prettier

You say first Crystal animation is better than the 90s ( which is not true by any means and its something technical that can be measured and its not arguable ) but then you say you like better the colors. Animation is one thing, character design another and the color used is another technical aspect.

I think you are mixing aspects and you say “ crystal animation is better “ when you are refering to the color work or the character design which is ok if you prefer it, thats just a matter of artistic tastes.

Anyway, its hard to compare the color work in a clasical anime drawn by hand using painted cels and a digital anime where color works in a different way.

I feel like all talks surrounding this are just going round in circles at this point. Character designs are all subjective, everyone has their favorite. I think technically speaking it’s pretty well accepted that the first two seasons of Crystal overall were.. not up to par. Season 3 onwards in my opinion just depends on your personal tastes.

I am a fan of the 90s art and animation personally just because I like how cel art looks and the general feel it gives off in general. I also feel like overall the imagery used is more imaginative. It’s really hard to replicate that in modern work. However on the other hand Crystal and Eternal have scenes that look amazing that probably just couldn’t be possible in the 90s. Ami’s awakening in Eternal for example blows her 90’s one out of the water (pardon the pun) on a technical level.

No, its not. Animation is a serie of techniques and work used to give movement to characters for a motion project. Its not the same as " character design " which of course is something more personal and I think thats what you wanted to mean.

If you want to compare animation from both series just take the best animated episode of Crystal and the best one of the 90's and compare the animation going frame by frame with the in between frames, number of different frames drawn for a sequence, techniques used to give movement to the characters, the detail of every frame, etc... something that I'm sorry but Crystal can't compete with the 90's best episodes.

Just talking about animation as you said first on the post. Other aspects can be discussed.

I still prefer frames that don't have too much movement but have great art, versus a character that moves a lot but with not so good art.

if you look at Itoh's episode, characters don't necessarily move a lot but each still frame is pretty.

Unfortunately, in most of Crystal s1/2 episodes, still frames are MEH, even if there is maybe more movement than in the old anime.

By the way, I don't really inderstand who hated the reused attack scenes in S3: I prefer this than real time attacks that are most of the time ugly (yes, looking at you Venus Rolling Heart Vibration).

For me SM was always about stock footages so at first when Crystal started I was really disappointed. But some real time attacks were really looking nice (Act 4 with Mars and Jupiter) or Moon Healing Escalation over the Earth.
Then somehow in season 2 for an unknown reason (?) they started to bring back some kind of stock footages which were not a bad idea at first (I like the fact that it was not a copy paste of the classic anime version) but most of them were so badly animated : Shine Aqua illusion or Love Me chain are painful to watch just because of it... Venus Rolling in real time looks absolutely ridiculous too...
Then the attacks again in season 3 are really cool for most of them. I hate the copy paste from the classic anime thought. So NO to Mercury Aqua Mirage and Chronos Typhon.
I will be honest too I’m a bit mad about the copy paste in the new movies but at least it seems that all attacks (excepted from Jupiter and Venus) seems really well redrawn

I think The best way is to have mixture of stock footage and real time attacks. The problem with season 3 was that they reused their attack way too many times, all in a row which was overkill in comparison to the 90s anime. S1 had some decent real time attacks but some looked jarring. S2 started stock footage again but it wasnt all that great. Stiff, choppy, wonky.

Luckily seems Eternal looks good to great in that regard

I will give the '90's animation this. While I like Crystal's design, the proportions of the character's do sometimes look odd. (Chibiusa sometimes looks too tall for her age, but when you put her next to Mamoru, he looks like a giant or she looks like the five year old she actually is. And sometimes they're too thin. But you have to admit the third season corrected a lot.)

They both have their highs and lows.. but it’s important to clarify whether you mean the Blu Ray final versions or the web version.. it shocks me how many fans still don’t know that the Blus have improved animation. I personally think that’s part of Crystal’s bad rep- they base it on the web version.

Though Viz really should update their Hulu master of the sub to have the Blu-ray version..

The blu-ray version. Yes, I'm fully aware the web version was...less than optimal.

Yeah this unfinished web version cos a lot to Crystal’s reputation. Although it was a modern way to present the Series they were clearly at the end not prepared to face it... plus the fact that the platform was probably the wrong one and that most of fans at this time watched a low quality stream version on computer not adapted for... we’re so far away of Netflix stream quality in 2021.
