What is the element that makes a story, a Sailor Moon story? Preferably a theme or overall message, not a character.

Example being Spider-Man and the "great power, great responsibility thing".

I think, at least based on the manga and Queen Serenity words to Usagi, that the theme is to believe in yourself and to control your emotions. If Usagi doubts herself, her power diminishes. The source of her power is showed to be her heart and emotions.

That's an interesting observation. I wonder if Usagi was a bit smarter and started to have doubts about her moral right to murder youma/lemures/humans without any investigation and a trial, would she be able to eventually carry out her mission and become the ruler of the entire planet? :P

For the original anime, I'd say it's "The Power of Love". :P
