Has anyone from the Optimum cast spoken of the new dub?

I know some of them had wished the Viz cast well when it was announced but have any of them watched it and commented their thoughts?

Maybe it’s one of those if you have nothing nice to say things...

They haven't and they haven't said anything specifically about Crystal* either. Whenever they've been asked about either in the panels I've seen on YouTube, they tend to say "We haven't gotten them yet in Canada" even though both are available for free streaming there. They're either too busy and a little out of the streaming loop to have watched, or they're being diplomatic.

*Tracey Moore has commented on Crystal, basically to say it felt shallow and lacked the heart of the 90s anime and the manga. We stan an accurate queen!

Omg Jill Frappier is amazing. Forever the best Luna.

And Tracey Moore is adorable. Plllease I need a redub with the old Canadian cast and Moore being Usagi. They can reuse the Viz dialog verbatim for all I care.

Some of them were present at the dub's premiere at Anime Expo in 2014, and the reaction seemed to be positive. Susan Roman and Amanda Miller seem to be very friendly. Many of the cast have acknowledged the dub's existence, but few have commented on its quality. Some of them don't even seem to grasp the concept of a redub, and apparently just think they're dubbing Crystal.

And OMG, that Tracey Moore clip really makes me wish her involvement in the show didn't end so soon, not just as an actress, but a director as well. She just seems to "get" the show on so many levels, and she's even read the manga. Nicole Thuault didn't know something good when she had one.

If I lived in Canada and had the remotest idea how to go about licensing an anime, I'd so be tempted to start a Kickstarter to raise the funds to license and record a new dub with the OG cast. (Or, more ideally, do an animated film that would serve as a tribute/conclusion to the classic dub).
I am admittedly ignorant here, so this is all supposition...

...but from what I gathered, the issue isn't the license at all. Viz does have the exclusive license for both the U.S. and Canada, so one would still have to go through them.

The issue is Canadian laws and streaming deals on this matter. As far as streaming goes, Hulu isn't available in Canada. Furthermore, there is a Canadian content requirement for shows to be broadcast on Canadian TV, and using the U.S.-based Studiopolis essentially locks Sailor Moon out. I'm pretty sure this is one reason why the old dub was made with a Canadian production studio; it would be suitable for airing on both Canadian and US TV.

And that's the irony. There is already a Canadian-ready dub; the old dub. Unless due to Viz holding the license it no longer contains "Canadian Content," it would still qualify. You would just need to dub Stars, no need to go through the entire series. At worst, they'd have to redub Classic and R, but the Cloverway dub is uncut already. Viz just doesn't want to spend the money, though.

But I'd want that animated film, too. :)

AFAIK while Canadian Broadcast laws require a certain amount of Canadian created content not every show they broadcast has to be Canadian. It certainly helps and Fred Ladd pretty much confirmed that that plus lower dubbing rates is the reason DiC subcontracted the dubbing work to Optimum.

I wouldn’t mind them redubbing the Cloverway dub for quality reasons.

Actually even though they have their own issues I wouldn’t mind them doing what Funimation did for their Dragon Ball Z remastered sets. Just redub the whole thing uncut with a consistent cast and keep the terminology consistent. they can even use the old Optimum scripts as a basis. The only downside is that may result in the DiC music not being used or something.

Alternatively just dub Sailor Stars and treat it as a continuation of the old dub.

But I'd want that animated film, too. :)
That too

That's about my same exact opinion of Crystal. God I love Tracy Moore :) Best dub voice for Serena, and actually probably my favorite voice in the whole Optimum dub (I know a lot of people like Stephanie Beard the best, but for me it's Tracey)

Linda: And I'll tell you one of the things I really loved about the original one was they went, they were very, very careful to make sure that every single - there's five main girls, of course - and they made sure that every single one of them sounded completely different. And they gave them completely different personalities. And they were REALLY careful to do that. There were - Katie and...Mercury sounded a lot the same at one point, at the very beginning, and they made sure that one of them pitched their voice up more, one of them pitched their voice down more, and I think that that's what made the first one even more special, because they really did make them unique. I'm not as sure as that's - that the redub is quite as...
Katie: Distinct?
Linda: Distinct, yeah. But they've done a great job, you know, and they're lovely people, that's for sure. (That was a real catty thing... Rarrr!)

I think Shingo's old man voice is pretty distinct and memorable too
Entirely for the wrong reasons :P

And let’s be fair. It’s pretty much entirely a problem with Viz’s female casting.

Mamoru, the Shintenou, Shingo, Umino, etc they sound all pretty distinctive.

I mean Mamoru sound like literally every “aloof pretty bo” from a shonen/shoujo anime dub ever but..

Usagi and Setsuna are the most distinctive. Makoto is usually distinctive, but Haruka sounds just like her now. Minako isn't too bad, but Ami, Rei, Michiru, and even Luna all sound alike. Also Mamoru and Artemis sound alike too, and even Chibiusa and Diana. They're all good actors, but the dub usually just sounds like your average anime dub from like 2003. Not bad, but disappointingly mediocre a lot of the time.

Let it never be said that I never said anything in defense of the Studiopolis dub. I don't think Shingo's voice is bad, or skews that much older than anyone else's does.

The reason why it seems "old man" is because Shingo, like lots of kids in animation, is coded a lot younger than his character's age, and young male characters are usually voiced by female voice actors. It doesn't help that he's the younger brother to the main character and that it's anime. But he's, like 11, on the cusp of puberty.

But I agree Mamoru does sound like a generic aloof pretty boy, which is terrible because in Classic, two of his traits were his pettiness and his awkwardness he tried to mask. Mamoru was a subversion of that tall, dark, handsome type as much as an example.

It's mediocre because the voice director is either incompetent or was given directives from Viz/Toei/whatever that effectively sabotaged this dub. It's scary how much better every single last actor is in any other semi-recent role. Even in throwaway shows that people forgot about the actors gave better performances.

I suppose Viz and Studiopolis decided to play it so safe that it ended up being very bland. Any creative choice can backfire on them as somehow being offensive to somebody somewhere but that doesn't make for a great product.
