Even back in the day, I didn't find it funny, mostly because the cast...could not act...(I say this as someone who also cannot act well). Comedic acting is HARDER than dramatic acting, and even if the writing wasn't so one-note, the episodes would be unbearable because half of it was just screaming.
Even if they could act, though, the structural problem was SMA their whole approach to the material. Whereas other Abridged series mined humor from the ridiculousness of the plots and animation direction, SMA seemed to just to be mean just for meanness sake. Take Stereotypically Satantist Raye. This could have been funny if Raye were secretly evil and all of the Sailor Scouts just thought she was "psychic," thus poking fun at the dub coverup while demonstrating the basis for a wild, unfounded belief. But having her scream "Must pray to Satan" just comes off as an attempt to be "edgy" for shock value without setting up the joke.
