This is a pretty good release I guess if it weren't for the English subtitles. I wonder what names they used for the Chinese subs and whether they're the same as TVB's version? :P Anyway, the back of the box seems like it's a Japanese release. Can anybody confirm if the text on the box is Japanese or Chinese?

"Queen Berry" is most likely they heard it wrong. XD They pronounce it fast like "KUIIN BERIru" so I'm guessing they did not hear the small RU sound at the end. XD!

Probably the same as TVB's version since it's so well known locally. At least the main characters will have the same name, that's undisputable. The less important ones may be debatable. Like the manga and TVB's anime & the VCD release names are not always the same too.

For the bad English subtitles, I suspect they just translate the Chinese subtitles into English. Not necessarily done by someone who is proficient in English cuz I suspect their target audience doesn't use the English subtitles anyways.

That's weird then... :| Their design is awkward. Why not just release the 5 DVDs separately? The first box has a picture of all 5 Soldiers and yet the last 2 has only Jupiter and Venus. It doesn't even match. It's better to have all 5 discs in separate cases and each cover should have the respectable character on it only. My opinion.

Actually they do have seperate dvd covers for each girl, as in the pictures of the box set. They just combined the first three. The timing is really bad in one episode, which is the one where Usagi turns into a youma and Ami is taking care of her. The lines are one line slower, which sucks. One episode has a lot of static. The fansubs are much better.

Yes, that's what I was talking about. In the boxset, it's a flip-open case where the background is Moon, Mercury, and then Mars as seen in the picture above. The style is the same as the Jupiter and Venus one on the later DVDs in the auction above. I was trying to say that they should not use the flip-open case and just release 1 DVD using the Sailor Moon background, 1 for Mercury, and 1 for Mars so that it would be consistent with the Jupiter and Venus one. Sorry, I'm a perfectionist. :D

I don't understand how Justin got perfect picture quality (unless I misunderstand the meaning of "like you are there filming with the actresses") and ICyRHap got all these crappy static or lagging in subtitles?

Are you two talking about the same DVD boxset here? Justin got his from Kikiwai, which is a reputable anime/manga shop...I wonder if you do get crappy pictures can you go back for an exchange or a refund?

On the importing and exporting of anime dvds, some Japanese anime companies are trying to get the American distibutors to make the subs on the raw track of their releases to have non-removable subtitles. Example, if this were to happen, you couldn't take the subbies off of Sailormoon S episodes if you wanted to watch the show in Japanese without subtitles. They want to do this to discourage their Japanese costumers from buying the cheaper American releases that usually have bigger episode counts. Just some random stuff I decided to pop in with.

P.S. Bootlegers can and do use official dvds. Take a look at the bootlege Fushigi Yuugi boxsets, or even the fruitsbasket or Utena bootleges, and you'll be looking at exactly copies of the American releases. English sub, original Japanese, same covers, the whole kabotle. It's making my buying dvds off e-bay a pain.

Hmm.... maybe the boxset of the first 3 dvds are better quality than the individual dvds that I got for them? I must of gotten the ghetto edition of them. You can get them at AnimeToxic.com for about 10 bucks each plus shipping.

From a person who keeps in with the HK DVD world...

Sometimes, HK companies 'upgrade' their DVDs. This doesn't happen very often, but it has been known to happen. They don't tell people, and just start pressing a better quality version of whatever set they're releasing. What I think happened is they started using better quality sources after volume 3 hit, so they were just in time to make Part 1 of better quality.

Now, as you probably know, Pretty Guardian volume 1 (HK) is Episodes 1-8 (and the special), and the volumes afterwards are consequently 5 episodes each. (9-13, 14-18, 19-23, etc. etc.) Well, where the DVDs are at right now, episode 33 (which just aired) will finish off volume 6. Meaning, shortly after volume 6 is released (HK, remember), Part 2 will be as well.

The raws which are used by the bootleggers are easily findable on Winny. Winny is a Japanese peer 2 peer program. You can get the raws which the bootleggers use yourself by finding a copy of Winny. You will need to have your computer set for Japanese support for non Unicode programs. Open winny with a current node list, put in the kana for Sailor Moon( a good way of doing this is to open up the Japanese page for the Sailor Moon single on CD Japan and copying it from there) and you will see a veritable array of raws. They usually turn up 5 - 6 hours after an Act has finished airing.

Bootleg DVD raws (easily downloadable on winny)
Size - 3 - 400mb
Bitrate - 1750kbps (or thereabouts)
Resolution - 640x480
Sound - 160kbps mp3 compressed sound
Encoded with Divx 5.02

Original Region 2 Vobs
Size - 1.57GB
Bitrate - 3000 kbps or more
Resolution - 720x480
Sound - 448kbps Raw PCM sound
Encoded with mpeg 2

The point I'm trying to illustrate here is that you can't really make comments about superior picture quality untill the bootleggers start releasing DVD's based off Region 2 source and hence no clock. The statistics given above speak for themselves. The only time that TV capped raws would be comparable to VOBS is if somebody capped off HDTV but as far as I'm aware Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is not broadcast on any HDTV stations or at the very least I've not seen any raws which have stated they were HDTV caps.

If faced with a choice between buying bootlegs or not, I'd opt for downloading Gallifrey's DVD iso's and using the money I would have spent on bootlegs getting a DVD burner instead as they can be obtained for as little as $85 :D

As a point of order, that bit is trivially wrong ;). Raw stereo PCM has a bitrate of 1568kbps, rarely used on DVDs although it is allowed ;). 448kbps is a standard bitrate for Dolby Digital. 448kbps is usually used for 5.1, although it can be used for stereo, providing better quality then the more normal 192kbps used for DD stereo.

Hmn, combining the original vobs with subtitles lifted via DVD Subbers transcriber, it could almost be worth purchasing a DVD burner...

Haven't heard of these. Where can I get them? Are the hard subbed? Do they use TV or DVDs for source?
Gallifrey's DC++ Hub, I think.
