i think it'd be more interesting to know about the behind-the-scenes than the project itself.
I don't think Toei regrets the existence of Crystal, the producers (Toei & Kodansha, please don't forget Kodansha is also at fault) didn't invest much money, selling a lot of expensive merchandise of the 90's anime simultaneously. But also I think they do partially. I mean, they're selling a lot of products with the Eternal & Sailor Moon, R and S brands printed on them. For some (and obvious) reasons Crystal, SuperS and Sailor Stars have been swept under the rug; Crystal was a flop, SuperS merchandise is available through redesigns and patched as Eternal, the fate Sailor Stars will follow in the future. That's why I'm completely sure the Stars arc will have the classic designs; merchandise is the first rule.
I'd like to know more about the production because the whole project is the crystallisation (no pun intended) that something happened between Toei and Kodansha in 2012-2013.
And remember, they worked with Studio Deen aka the worst Anime Studio for Eternal which means they don't regret it and they want SM for true milking purpose.
Copied from Quora about Toei flaws.
"They’re too dependent on their top rated shows
Dragon Ball Z
One Piece
Digimon
Sailor Moon
Yugioh *Note this thing doesn't belongs to toei anymore
Without argument, these are Toei’s biggest anime shows. They’re so successful almost no studio can compete with it.
Fist Of The North Star, World Trigger, and some others like Lovely Complex are worth mentioning…. But that’s it.
Out of Toei’s almost 800+ catalogue of anime shows, the majority of them are weak.
These 5 killer anime shows is why Toei Animation is still relevant.
While it’s true you could say the same for many studio’s (it’s a normal thing), in Toei Animation’s case they have an awful ratio.
If we use Kyoto Animation for comparison, they have 124 anime shows.
At least 20 of them are known, relevant, or can be considered classics on some level.
That’s not a bad ratio.
Out of almost 800+ Toei anime, can you name at least 20 or 40 besides the obvious?
Doubt it.
I’m not saying Toei is back alley content or anything like that. But it feels like they’ve struggled because their top anime tend to overshadow everything else.
It’s as these shows are too successful to allow room for any other “new” anime to reach the same level. And that reflects in their ratio.
From a financial point of view they could care less about what I think. They’re swimming in assets (money that will pay them forever, basically).
But from a creative, quality point of view, they can’t be compared to other anime studios who have less of a crutch to hold on to."
Especially SM is very easily milked by Toei compared to another Anime by what they do with Precure mostly due to the demographics Toei want. SM is a great series but I don't like Toei, the series could be better nowdays if another studio like Sunrise or Madhouse,... aired Crystal instead (90s Anime dosen't need a reboot)
Anyway, One Piece Wano arc looks very great!
