Or rather because Takeuchi admires Tadano's style.
Well, I can see that being true for the old anime. Tadano captured the essence pretty good, despite the simplification for the animation standarts at the time and she has some gorgeous drawings that perfectly capture both the sweetness and the gracefulness and maturity of the characters. Her modern designs are just kawaii and have lost that more mangaesque look. Also I cannot believe so many animators working on this show seem to have no idea how to draw profiles. Still they are the most balanced, but a few minor tweaks could help.

Tadano's style now is Post-Evangelion, 2000s basically not her early 90s style.

According to this post, the most difficult part of making Crystal was deciding who to character designer; It took a year from the announcement of production until Sako was chosen, and Crystal aired a year later.
To make one episode of anime, takes three months, at least one month. It's conceivable that the animetors schedule was quite overcrowded.
I read somewhere she submited this art as her audition for chara designer (Crystal):

I remember how excited I was when they revealed this image on the site. I can imagine this being true. I can imagine Sakai telling her "Well, good job, but this is Toei, not Sunrise. I doubt this was submitted for an audition for character design, because I think such thing should be frontal and probably face and full body drawing, not such pose. This was most likely concept art done later

well, that one predates the key art in actual final design:

I guess she submited the first one with some chara sheets (just like Tadano concept art/sketches from the bluray extras) and then they started to work on that until it was “polished” for production

This got me fooled.
But when I saw the character designs models, I already felt trash was incoming. I know lots of people like Sakou's art when it's not in movement but I never liked it. What annoys me the most is the hair. Why make it so pointy?
And the eyes... Hell no, even S3 did them better.

I would never be able to look straight into Akira's eyes because I will get migraine. So much water in those eyes, as if characters are suffering from headache or eye soreness.
And about Sakou's eyes, they're so dark and lack reflection. Unfortunately, her design fail 2 most important parts: dark eyes and big heads.

Outer Space
Her art is very pretty when she draws it "correctly". I hate one of the art where Usagi has those bug eyes. However, the artist is drawing it how Naoko approves (at least that is what I assumes). I think her art AND animation is beautiful if done with care but what we got seemed a bit unprepared or something. I like the way she draw the hair (I don't like Usagi's oranges sometimes though) She draw the Inners hair nice and I would have loved to see Outer designs by her. I like how she draws her skirts, and their intro poses (except for Mars' original one with the open legs)

I wish everything worked out but we still have Stars to looked forward to......however, many centuries it will take to come out.

I hope they just put more effort into it someway.

Tadano has the best eyes, among the character designers.

Yes, agreed! Sakou's art is beautiful when animators put care and effort into the animation.

I agree I do not like this art one bit
a stick figure with Usagi's hair would be an improvement in my opinion
if people like it no biggie but I stand by my opinion

It was so bad even the Sailor Ballz and Star Ballz cast, crew and animators were embarrased. :yoshi:

Would have wanted Sakou back for Stars so she could do anniversary box sets.
Never gonna happen, but we can hope for someone whose designs are close. Do we know what japanese fans want? Do they also want something more closer to Sakou? Or are they happy with the Eternal designs?

This is a bit different though. They reuse frames here. I am talking about the several cases in which Crystal used old footage during the preview of the next episode and simply used whatever from previous episodes.
they even used unfinished footage or the preview scenes where not used on the final episode (example: my avi frame scene was nowhere on episode 2)

I think what I like Satou is was different. It makes clear this was a reboot and it's not the 90s anime.I also like it look mature.
