Are you refering to that new promo art?
I think they are talking about the princess dresses, although we have seen it in Sakou style on merch, but I am not sure Sakou drew them plus the inners have no gloves. . Otherwise I am confused, because the new art look nothing like Sakou. And they mention dresses. But even the princess dress look nothing like they could have looked with s 1/2 shading and color depth.

I were talking about Sailor fukus in the movie. They don't look soft like their original and super form.

Still not as intricate as Sakou's but I get your point. Eternal fukus are more riffled in the manga, but yeah it does look like a mix. Now apply the mix on hair and faces, and we will finally have the nice balanced design. BTW, why won't you share your pros and cons?

It's ironic that eternal dresses in Eternal look like Sakou's dresses now. They even have more highlight, and even pattern on those glove rings! :wow:
I think Tamegai doing the next arc would give the franchise some closure because the Eternal fuku with the wrist ribbons was the design intended by Takeuchi for him to do in the first place, the Eternal movie gave Tadano a closure already regarding the other senshi.

Pro- Okay, good hair, good skirts.
It looked so really really good in most of the first promo art (that group art under the moon *chef kiss*
I actually liked it how you could tell they wanted to separate themself from the old adaptation adn wanted to offer something new, with a touch of shonen touch for the styke, insted of going for the precure moe style that was in trend around that year

Con- Well damn, the eyes lol. Like they had different eyes shape and stuff but most of the time they look really plain (the whole soulless phrase always makes me laugh, it sounds so exaggerate) and the face size was kinda outta place, their head looks kinda big sometimes too. The front shoots looks like a MESS, their body looks really awful compared to their side profile, it actually works really really good from the side (except from the long ass arms). I guess she first drawn the profile concept and then didn't knew how to make the front art and gave this weird hourglass body shape + the skirts are tooo low:

PLUS I LOOOOVE how Rei looks on this style (when they did it right lol)

(idk if you noticed this, but she most of the time she has like a bit of her hair coming in front, idk how to explain it in english lol but it was a lil detail):

S3:

Eternal: lol it works
tbh I wouldn't mind if this was the style since the beginning. They tried so much to not be like 90's anime (except for some classic nods) yet they ended with the easy route. I don't have much to say about this style, it's a clean work YET NOTHING LIKE THE MOVIE actually looks like their character sheets + those first poster looks nothing like their final design (I still cringe with that super happy sailor moon from the very first trailer). Maybe their head are too rounded or their hair is too plain but thats all.

idk if my english was correct, I was at work and dont have so much time to see if I make any mistake (english is not my first language) but I hope you all can understand my ideas.

The season 3 part cracked me
I have NOTHING nice to say about season 3.
It works for Precure but it doesnt feel like sailor moon at all.
Season 1/2 tried the old school romance style feel combined with Naokos art and Eternal is just 90's nostalgic trip with a modern twist.

It weird to see how Tadano new style holds up to the current anime trend, since her designs for SailorMoon (90's) looks pretty outdated if you really look at them (they look out of 80's for me but they were just starting the 90's, so...)

I love her 90s designs and Eternal could have worked if the faces a bit slimmer like her 90s design and they had noses again like the 90s design, but she really likes or was asked to do moe blobs this time around. Tbh the 80s had some great designs and I would take a dated design instead of moe any day.

I mean, for me is weird. Sailor Moon was an 90's icon in Mexico and it was released here in 1996 and it wasn't popular till late 90's with the reruns. So along with Saint Seiya (another 80's anime, who was produced in 1982 but brought to Mexico in 1992) they look like they belong to the 80's (that ain't bad) but looks kinda out of place when you have on the same block hour things like Dragon Ball Z, Digimon, Pokemon or Card Captor Sakura.

Especially when you look at it from nowadays point of view - all anime look the same these days. Kind of liked the vastly varied styles from the past. Plus Dtagon Ballz, Digimon and Pokemon are kind of ugly to me, plus they are shounen. As for Sakura it doesn't really look that different, except it goes a bit closer to the moe look, although it looks way better than the moe of today... But I get it, Tadano does some old time looking stuff at times. Her first concept for Eternal looked almost like 60s Osamu Tezuka, especially Venus. The 90s were way less carbon copied - I remember Hana Yori Dango which came in 1997 I believe to me looked as it came out decades before Sailor Moon, not in abad way, it was just a vastly differet style. Nowadays 90% of animeis round and lazy.

I found her first promo poster for Eternal looked a lot like Osamu Tezuka. For me, that poster ist the best (even though they look too young).

Like, compare Creamy Mami with Sailor Moon (first season, specially masahiro ando episodes) and they look from the same era.

SM 90's didnt pick up on the "modern style trend" from that era till late R or S (imo)
they look so vastly different on this sm redraw challenge lol

that's why I hate Marco art. It doesn't actually look from that era, instead it looks like he’s drawing sailor moon from memory

Sailor Moon pretty much existed in that weird cusp between late ‘80s to ‘90s style anime. You can see the same thing happen in Naoko’s manga. The artwork for the Dark Kingdom looked very ‘80s manga to me and her individual style didn’t really fully develop until the Dream arc.

S1/S2
Pros:
- Settei were okay but the execution was so different... I liked that fact that it was somewhat close to Code Geass though. And the fact that they tried to look different than the 90's anime was a nice idea, even if it didn't work in the end
- Liked the Moon Tiara Boomerang, it was reused later as stock footage with different background but the animation was nice and far better than any other attack we got in S1/S2
- I won't talk about the bad animation episodes because it ended being the vast majority of all episodes, but some episodes were interesing, like the one with Usagi on Nemesis or Pluto's death. I wouldn't say, as I've read, that they are movie like quality, because most of the time it was just hair porn with no actual animation, but still it was nice. I don't really need lot of movements if still frames are nicely drawns, but that's maybe just my taste
- Generally, male characters were nicely drawn (some shintenno's drawing are great, mostly Kunzite and Nephrite)

Cons:
- I hated the soft touch shading, like when you use a soft brush on photoshop you know ? It would have been ok on skins only maybe, but not on clothes and others parts. Same for their lips. I'm not against lipsticks but it looked ugly when the mouth was so little
- Eyes have a too much little black dot part and a too small white reflect so they seemed soul-less
- I didn't like their body shape, hourglass like. They tried to make them more mature but without giving them more feminine attributes (sorry to say the word but: heavier chest for instance... Itoh used to suggest their more feminine bodies in SuperS and it looked nice, without being too much)
- At one point you can tell that even Sakoh didn't really care anymore, settei for Pluto is atrocious, some BRD covers too... I suppose the atmosphere was heavy in the production team and she was disgusted, but still
- I didn't really like what they did with the time door atmosphere, the pinkinsh thing was out of place imo, always pictured this place darker than that
- Didn't like the zigzag in their hair, it never looked ok in the actual episodes (it looked way better in eternal though)
- Body had bad proportions. It's weird because if you look at Itoh's illustrations, legs are absolutly too long but it somewhat totally works, they look more balanced and pin-up like. It doesn't work in Crystal design, and I don't understand why.

S3
Pros:
- More constant quality in episodes, even if it's clear that they were in a rush in later episodes. The ride wasn't as violent as in first seasons
- Settei were nice and I understand what they tried to do with the dorito skirts, it looks okay if done properly but it was weird in the actual episodes
- Of course, loved the return of 2d animation. Some attacks are really nice (Jupiter Coconuts Cyclone, talismans attacks), I even like more Moon Spiral Heart Attack than in S.
- I liked how they twisted Hotaru's hair, it was interesting and different than in the older anime.
- It was fun to see Tellu nicely animated whereas she is only drawn by Nakamura in S
- Liked Moon Crisis animation too, even if background colors are a bit weird sometimes
- Tellu episode being the prettiest episode in the whole Crysternal franchise, and above lot of 90's episode too imp

Cons:
- I suppose it's easier to like this season design wise if you're used to precure style, so I didn't have much problem with this even if Takahashi is not my favorite precure character designer (I prefer Go Princess Precure or Huggto's style)
- Weird decision about what they did with Mistress 9 and here rolling eyes thing... It's not totally design related but she seemed more grotesque than threatening (it was way better in S)
- No more attacks for outers, wish they had redone Deep Submerge and World Shaking
- It's not totally design related either but I wish they had created henshin items for inners and outers too

Eternal / S4
Pros:
- I was not a Tadano fan in the original series to be honest, she was good in earlier episodes but it was weaker later (her last R episode, god...). Still Eternal made me like her more, it was a nice mix between her style and previous seasons.
- She made justice to the eternal fuku design and that is nice because the 90's version was really not pretty
- Generally all is really okay design wise, she did a good job and most of animators did well too, considering the work from home situation.

Cons:
- Generally uninspired promo art with bland poses and few movement. Even the BRD cover is not particulary interesting
- Moon and Chibimoon transformation and attacks were totally weak, even if they copied it from the 90's. It was done really early so they probably didn't have designs totally fixed but it was a shock when they revealed the transformation really...
- Animation isn't really movie quality, more like good TV series episodes. Still, it was enough for me, I didn't expect more for something that was basically free on Netlix
- I wish they had a bit sexier forms, rounder tights, Itoh knew how to do this well without being too provocative and Tadano lacks in that department (even Takeuchi gives them more feminine look).
- Pluto has sometimes weird faces (but my personal theory is that only Itoh managed to make her look good lol). Same for Neptune's hair, I'm not a fan of how they did it (but still, it was okay, not really a big problem for me).

Same here. The worst design is season 3. It's all bad. Both season 1 & 2 at times, it was going downhill. As much as Eternal is a marvel. They should have recalled Tadano from the start.

The skirts in season 3, they're ugly. Looks like slices of lettuce stuck together end to end and thick.

IDK but seeing Arc 1 Sailor Moon in Eternal style looks so right to me. They should have hired Tadano for S1/S2 and then hired different character designers each season that would build on her design… Aging her design and making it closer to Naoko’s style.
If Tadano was hired to do Crystal from S1/2, the outcome may have been different from what we see in Eternal...
