Hi,

Many people wonder why the Dark Kingdom was referred to as "The Negaverse" by DiC.

Here's my theory:

By having a "Negaverse" which would include the Dark Kingdom, Planet Nemesis, Tau Star System, Dead Moon Circus, etc, this would give continuity to what we now know were not the same show but separate shows, provided DiC would continue dubbing the show.

What do you think?

I think you’re overthinking it. DiC did not know much about the show. One of the people who had a main role in the creative direction thought the show was based on a toyline and Andy Heywadd was under the impression the show would be easy for them because they had outsourced animation to Japan before not realizing the content would be problematic for them which is why they sought the help of the guy who did Robetech and later the guy who localized Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion for guidance.

Reality is someone at Dic just thought Negaverse sounded like a cool bad guy name.

Remember, DiC never had any real plans for the series outside of doing the required amount 65 episodes for syndication

I really doubt it. They for sure knew 4 seasons were already out there in Japan and planned to keep investing in the show if it proved succesful in North America. There's no reason to think otherwise.

We don’t have any plans past the required 65 episodes for syndication =/= We won’t make more episodes if the show is a big hit

65 episodes (the standard amount for an American kids cartoon at the time) were produced and sold into syndication in order to sell a toyline and merchandise. People act like the show was cancelled until it got picked up again. It wasn’t cancelled DiC simply stopped producing episodes until Irwin toys fronted the money to get the last 17 episodes dubbed

Of course as with any show that’s a hit there’s always plans to do more but at the time DiC wasn’t looking that far ahead.

I honestly they thought it sounded cool. They made certain continuity mistakes on the dub which makes me think that they weren't too familiar with the series. Like in the first episode where Luna explains to Serena that their enemies are the Negaverse and Queen Beryl yet in later episodes they do not know who their enemies are as a group or who their leader is like when Sailor Mars on the Cruise episode asked Jadeite who he worked for. Likewise they decided to have the first group of enemies be from an alternate dimension instead of like in the original the Dark Kingdom were villains from Earth who overthrew the Earth and Moon Kingdoms. It is interesting though as I always felt that the name Negaverse would have been more fitting as the name of the dimension that the Death Busters are from and where the Tau Galaxy is located as they were actually from another dimension unlike the Dark Kingdom that were from Earth the D Point of the North Pole specifically.

I wonder if this is the same 'Negaverse' which was mentioned in Darkwing Duck (A WESTERN cartoon from DISNEY) and which is credited with giving birth to his Archnemesis Negaduck.
I sincerely doubt it, especially considering that one of the protocols that went into making Darkwing Duck was "play fast and loose with continuity". As in, the continuity of that show was deliberately barely existent. Character origins and backstories were constantly rewritten with no regards to which one was the true canonical one, even Negaduck himself got at least three different origin stories (one of which was obviously bogus, but still). And this was done because the creators wanted to treat the show like a Silver Age comic series, with the continuity being as wacky and nonsensical as the stories themselves. Tad Stones has even gone on record multiple times saying that, in his mind, the show was set in its own universe separate from that of DuckTales, claiming that the likes of Launchpad and Gizmoduck were different people from their DuckTales versions, despite the obvious connections and ties that the show and other media tried to make with DuckTales (and I really doubt any fans would want to think of DW and DT as separate universes instead of the same universe).

If that show couldn't even keep its own universe straight (on purpose, but still), there's little reason to think that DiC's Sailor Moon had any universal ties to it.
