I actually agree. About it being a terrible story I mean, I don't particularly care if it's adapted or not. But I can't say I'm thrilled to see in animation a 13 year old Rei kissing a Jadeite lookalike twice her age.
True, it is problematic. But can be reworked to make it less awkward.

Is that really any different from her "kissing" Tiger's Eye in the Dream arc? Both kisses are just illusions anyway.

- Rei goes to Mako's apartment, finds her sitting in the dark mumbling to herself
- Rei smashes Mako's Rain Tree music box, freeing her from her funk and releasing an evil spirit
- Rei runs out of the building and transforms
- We get this flashback scene of Rei and Kaido having a confrontation that ends with Rei saying he should be marrying her and then kissing him
- Rei (now Sailor Mars) calls out "How dare you!" and smashes several more Rain Tree music boxes.

For me, the implication is the music boxes were weaving their evil influence over Rei's mind, manipulating her memory of that day. The kiss wasn't real, and recognizing that is what snapped Rei back to her senses.

The entire story is about Rei's loneliness and self-induced isolation. It's about how she thought she had found a kindred spirit only for him to turn out to be a complete fake. In the end, she realizes she's found real kindred spirits - Mako, Ami, and Usagi - and she doesn't need to be alone anymore. It's not a story about romance. It would make no sense and be completely out of character for Rei to have kissed this old man and said he should be marrying her. Rei is a lot of things, but stupid and insane aren't among them.

I interpret "How dare you" as "How dare you pry into my private memories". She's influenced by the music boxes throughout the entire story, that's why she keeps remembering the past. Yet at no point is it implied that any of her other memories are tempered with.

She's thirteenish at that point. You can't expect a girl who's barely a teen to always act smart and sane, that's just humanly impossible.

That's the impression I got, too, since that memory was basically supposed to be like the last time she ever showed affection for a man before closing herself off completely...but this is sadly not distinct...like a lot of things in the manga.

See, I was so confused the first time I read it (because I'm an idiot), I thought that because the whole thing was a flashback, that the Jadeite apparition was a reveal that Kaidou was present-day reincarnated Jadeite before he got inducted into Dark Kingdom.

As the chapter could be more open to interpreation it might have been nice to see a grounded take on it. I have the same reading as MementoNepenthe , but they could have reinforced Rei and Jadeite by making him actual reincarnation. With 26 episodes to work with they could have given each shittenou a civil persona and make the whole conception work. Like Nephrite being Makoto's sempai, using the Sailor V chapter with the Kunzite clone and making Zoisite some very smart Mercurius, incorporating Ami's first love. Thi is what having the full story to work with means.

This is off topic, but I love Casablanca Memory. Is it creepy that Rei and Kaidou kiss? Yes. However, what I really love about it is that it gives background to Rei’s family, and the story with her father is really intriguing. The heartless LDP — I mean, “DLP” — politician angle gives the series a little more realistic depth.

I love "Casablanca Memory"! The best thing is that we learn about her family.

And still, while problematic, depending on how you read the story, it is nothing compared to the 90s show. We had Naru and Nephrite that was an abusive pairing, on top of him being at least 10 years older than her. Then we had Mamoru being of age, and Usagi being 14. While nothing happened there, Minako's Alan was also in his mid 20s. And let's not even start with the Trio and all the creppy stuff going on there, like Fish Eye stalking and abusing elementary school kid...

Well, most of these are only problematic if you're American.
In Germany Mamoru's and Usagi's relationship would be perfectly legal.

Ok Mamoru and Ysagi might pass, despite it being wrong, in my country it is somewhat common as well for 14-15 year old to go with someone like 18-19, so this can pass. But what Naru and Nephrite, or Fish Eye kreeping on a kid... I doubt this is very normal in Germany. Or Hawk abusing an old retired lady. Compared to that the manga, with the exception of the Black Lady and the incest kiss that was way to much and the reason i do not like Black Moon arc, while R is my favorite season of the 90s show, while having problematic contect, in the end these things have consequences and make this character mature. The old show had it to scratch Ikuhara's weird fetishes.

Now some might say, oh but the Trio are animals, it is in their predatory nature, they have no morals. I can make the contra argument that this is fictiin, in which Rei is portrayed to have the maturity of a 30 year old, so it is normal to find kindred spirit in him. For me the kiss was just in her head. It was something she wanted and do, but would never let herself.
