I'm going to miss the DiC music because I'm not much of a fan of the music used for the first two seasons on the original, but I look forward to seeing more from this dub. That being said, it's hard to get the old voices of the characters out of my head. It's going to take some adjustment, but I'm excited to see more, and to have episodes that have never been dubbed before being dubbed finally--like Minako's backstory, for one. Even though that's in the later half of the season and a long way off.

Fair enough SmallLadySerenity =^_^=
Passion's certainly not a bad thing.
I'm certainly going to give it a chance and watch a few episodes when it's released. I plan on buying the whole series from Viz's release as it is.

I like Mamoru's voice and am lukewarm on Usagi, haven't heard the Luna clip yet.

Personally I adored the voices DiC's Jupes,Mercury, Mars, Venus(SM) and Moon(TH) in the role. This Dub could be very interesting. Looking forward to hearing the whole cast eventually.

After reading one of SmallLadySerinity's forum novels and taking it into consideration....I went back and watched the clip again..and again....and again. My seventh time looking at the clip.. I didn't like Usagis reaction when she first saw Luna but I did like how she made the shocked noises and hid and then it was cool. It's just at some moments something seems a little off.

As far as re-watching Luna...i'm still a little on the fence here but she sounds a tad bit "older". I don't know how to explain it. I did find her laugh ridiculously cute.

Man I wish they released a good clip of the others - Hm, I wonder if they've dubbed that far yet though.

Looks like I'm warming up to the voices a bit.

I will say that the original voices were pretty much perfect for their Japanese counterparts - well maybe Luna had a bit of a throat problem but as im glancing at old dubs (which I will admit are rather   now) I still prefer them a little more but something in my gut is telling me that I'm going to like the new dub once it gets rolling more...

I'm so anxious for the final two episodes! ^_^'

Oh and Sailor Moon fans can be quite vicious.. :ohdear: Those comments on that dub video are something else.. :eeklez:

Can I patent and trademark that? :D

(I'm finding that I'm actually having to keep the clip with Luna on a loop just so I can write this --- because the Ancient British Nanny simply refuses to go down without a fight. And I'm being serious about this.)
It was worth braving the wall of text for this gem. :V I can sure relate!
Oh, man, Salem, while I was writing about Luna's new VA, The Ancient British Nanny was screaming in my brain, and I literally could not write about Michelle Ruff's voice acting because The Ancient One kept drowning out the New Voice with the Old Voice. I actually had to replay that clip several times so I could think of it NOT being in Jill Frappier's Old Nanny voice.

And after that experience, I can finally see why a lot of folks out there are saying that they're having a hard time listening to the new VA's on their own merits ------- because their memories of the old DiC VA's are literally talking over the new Viz VA's and drowning them out.

It's because we are all so, SO used to the old VA's. That's why this is such a hard notion for some of us to grasp and get used to. We're all used to "Old Voices" and when we hear "New Voices"...there's just a bit of a disconnect there, at first.

I, personally, will probably go through the exact same thing on Saturday morning, when episode 2 of 'PGSM: Crystal' airs, and instead of hearing Aya Hisakawa's lovely Ami voice...........it will suddenly be someone "NEW" and "SCARY". I fully expect I may have trouble adjusting to the new Japanese cast because I love the original cast so much.

Change is scary. But it can be good.

A big thumbs up to you, SmallLadySerenity, for that post.

I didn't grow up with the dub. Well, not THAT dub at least. I'm from another country and don't even know nor care about Terry Hawkes, Linda Ballantine and whatever their other names were. All I care about is the awful scripts. I tried letting episodes of the old dub roll while I was drawing but I couldn't leave them on for long. The scripts are so americanised, in a very bad, self-parody-like way, that it makes me nauseous. We make fun of the old English dubs in other countries, did you know that? They are SO bad, with the voices and the scripts and the censorship... that they are being mocked worldwide. I was part of a Sailor Moon panel we organized at a convention this year, and for those members of the audience who didn't know the English dubs, we let a few clips roll and told them what the characters' "American" names are. It was part of an entire segment on "censorship in Sailor Moon". The whole audience was in stitches. We also mentioned other funny international changes, but the USA version was the best because everyone understood what they were saying.

And yet there are fans out there who seem to think that not calling Usagi "Serena" or that changing the scripts is a bad thing. I thought the entire Moonie fandom was clear on this point, at least: the English dubs are an atrocity. And now instead of being glad that they're finally getting a complete, unadulterated version... They start whining and insulting the dubbers and saying that they wanted the old dubs or the old actors instead.

I'm sorry but from the point of view of a complete outsider, this makes for an unexpected and unpleasant display. And I'm not talking about you guys from the forum, because everyone's been civil around here. But the things I've seen on Youtube and tumblr... Wow.

Eh.. I don't really know what to think Darien/Mamoru sounds okay I guess.. And so does Usagi-chan.. Though Usagi-chan's voice seems kinda off. (Almost like an MLP Character I wouldn't be surprised if the voice actor played a role in voice acting for MLP)

I'm probably just used to Usagi-chan's original dub voice.. It's going to be hard to get used to all the new dub voices.. *sigh* :wry:

What I got from SmallLadySerenity's post was not that people aren't allowed a negative opinion, just that it's too early to entirely write off the dub. We've only seen a few short clips, wait a few episodes or at least watch one full one before entirely counting it out. (which I completely agree with)

They do the phrase in one of the clips released, and it's "I'll punish you", so the "you will be punished" is a sub only thing.
Actually that clip may be from a beta version. They stopped it and played a second version of the episode with "You will be punished", and the first episode used that phrase as well.

Venus(SM)
I can already hear the complaints when our new Venus starts dubbing. Cherami Leigh will be a lot closer to Emilie Barlow than Stephanie Morgenstern, though personally I think that will be a good thing. I always thought Stephanie sounded a bit too mature, and she lacked the energy that Venus should have for her off-the-way, zany moments.

The way Stephanie said "the cat with the bald spot!" was a bit annoying, but otherwise I think she did a great job. She really nailed all the emotions Usagi has in that clip, and I thought the snore she added when sleeping was hilarious. XD

They are -- we know for a fact they've already done the first 19 episodes at least. :) (probably even more by now)

So far to as I hear it this dub doesnt live up to its hype. Sure the dialogue is perfect and thats going to be everyone's default defence for it but the acting is just so stiff.
There is literally no emotion in any of the characters; like a lot of modern dubs these days.

I cant say I like Sheh in this role as Usagi, It often sounds like Sheh is forcing herself into the role which is why she sounds so inconsistent with her deliveries but even still I hear way too much Orihime and no Usagi in it. I'm sorry but I still give Tracey the title for the best Usagi voice. It actually sounded cute, not a 30 year old woman trying to sound cute. A lot of Sheh's attempts to squeal as Usagi just hurts my ears.

I also would have liked Mamoru's actor to have had a bit more life in him, his part sounded like a very uninspired line-read, flat and dull. Its deliveries like these that make me question why these high-budget actors are more recognized than the obscure ones that actually do their job. His delivery was just so stiff for a "professional".

Then theres Luna. Michelle Ruff didnt even try to change her voice up did she? Her current tone doesnt fit the character at all to me, it doesnt sound cute enough. To me she makes luna sound patronizing as opposed to Frapper who made Luna sound like she generally cares about Usagi - just easily annoyed. I know Michelle Ruff can go higher with her voice and sound daintier but apparently not here. I'll have to give the episodes more time, but they can really use some actual effort.

Pitiful... Been looking at the YouTube comments and it's getting out of hand. This one user just came out and blatantly called the new dub trash and had the audacity to come out by calling it pornography. I mean... COME ON people. I'm all for sharing one's own opinion and all, but... When it's something this outlandish, it's just downright trolling. Know what I mean?

Yeah, calling it pornography makes....no sense. But that person wasn't wrong about calling it trash. Sorry, but it kind of sort of definitely is. The voices we've gotten so far have been meh at best and godawful at worst. There's also been ZERO acting. Line reading =/= acting. Considering these are all professional VAs with lots of experience, that's really unacceptable and frankly embarrassing. You can try to excuse it as "it's only the first episode, they'll improve over time, they haven't settled yet" all you want, but that's a cop out. There are plenty of animated shows out there where character voices changed from the first few episodes to episodes in latter seasons (compare Homer Simpson's voice in season one to his voice now), but there was still THOUGHT put into those first episodes. The actors still gave performances that showed effort and nuance and an understanding of their characters. Even if their performance style changed, they still GAVE a performance in those beginning episodes. They didn't go, "Well, this is only the first episode. I don't know this character well enough yet, so I'll just read the lines and worry about developing this character's voice later." That's called being lazy. I mean, it's great if you're happy with the voices and the performances, but I fail to understand how.

For me I really like Mamoru and Usagi's English voices in the Viz dub... but Luna is just way off what I had in mind.

For me Luna should sound like a wise young leader ... a mix between Jill and Keiko's interpretation of Luna's. Viz's Luna didn't really hit that ...

Already gave my thoughts on these clips in the main Viz thread, so I'll just quote what I wrote there:

Some of the lines are indeed changed.

And I kinda wish Usagi's voice was a little higher pitched.

And Luna needs to sound younger and cuter.
Sabrblade said:
It might have been better for the redub's preview clips to have come from a later episode after all the actors have gotten used to their roles and had found the voices that they want to use for them, potential spoilers for said future episode be darned.

Not really sure why people are saying there isn't emoting, at least as far as Usagi is concerned. Mamoru and Luna haven't emoted as much, but at the same time we haven't seen clips of them yet showing much emotion. A poorly acted, line-reading dub would be something like Hunter x Hunter's dub:
http://youtu.be/eWJl8UFWhtc?t=1m20s
Or any number of those awful Signaporean dubs, like Yugioh's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-qylk_uscg

After how many years people have wanted Laura Bailey as Usagi's actress, I knew almost anyone else fans would be unhappy with. With how much people wanted Laura it makes sense not getting her or someone would be disappointing. But the thing about Laura is she would match Tracey more than the Japanese voice, which is not what they're going for. The reason Sheh was likely chosen for the role instead is because she sounds closer to Kotono. Sheh is one of those few VAs who can do high-pitched voices with ease so she doesn't really sound forced to me, but I guess anyone who's natural voice doesn't perfectly match their Usagi voice would have that said about them. Suppose if Viz had casted someone like that there would be less complaints, but most dub VAs that naturally sound high pitched and young are in the Texas talent pool rather than LA...At least that I know of.

Age-wise she sounds inbetween Keiko and Jill -- not an old lady (Jill) or young girl (Keiko) but a young woman.
But I guess her voice doesn't exactly scream wise. I do like how she sound more like one of Usagi's peers though.

In regards to the shrieking - I'm not sure why that's an issue as Usagi is just shrieky in the original Japanese version. I just pray that they don't do the weird, totally inappropriate moaning sounds that the original dub cast did in almost every scene. I'm talking about stuff like this or THIS.

I think Sheh has just about the perfect pitch for Usagi. She's naturally high enough to have a similar sound about her to Mitsuishi's Usagi, but not so high that casting Chibiusa (who basically needs to be Usagi, but higher-pitched) will be difficult. And it's always better when voice actors use something close to their natural pitch for a character, as it gives them a much bigger range to emote with without sounding strained.

If anything sounds pornographic, it's definitely the old dub at times.

She also has a nice range, so it'll be interesting hearing her do things like Princess/Neo-Queen Serenity. :)

Wow they sound great!! (Even though the DiC voices kind of leak into my memory for myself to have that bias)

What's wrong with Queen Beryl's left eye.
