To be fair, Tracy only voiced in the more ditsy episodes. She didn't get to the more serious ones.
I love the way her episodes play off her "lazy, fun loving school girl" against "talking cat who tells me I'm a crime fighter with a magic tiara and wants me to fight evil". It's a dynamic that works just in those episodes because they really acknowledge and send up just how bizarre the whole concept of the show is in ways the the rest of the series doesn't while also contrasting this with scenes of the Silver Millennium to let the viewer in on just how little the heroine understands.
That's one thing I really love about the show, how realistic our heroine is.

I found Tracy to do the mild-mannered innocent aspect of her most realistically. I really got the feel that she was someone that loved video games over school, and some of the dub lines in that regard emphasized it more so with her more varied excuses and pseudo-philosophies about how too much school is bad for health and etc. A lot more convincing than in Crystal where Usagi just kept using Sailor-V as the reason why she shouldnt be in school over and over again.

Lita ISN'T a better written character than Makoto.
Ok, I'm genuinely curious as to why you think this. I find that the Japanese greatly over emphasizes her stereotypical girly qualities in ways that make her a really flat character (with one specific exception :mischief:), the episode with Reika has her cook and clean for Moteki instead of simply mutually helping Andrew, painting both characters in a better light. You could chalk it up to Japanese cultural expectations here, but her character is more frequently played for comedy based on the couple of character quirks she's given and otherwise her personality feels like an afterthought. The Rainy Day Man episode is the one case focusing on her where the Japanese is exceptionally good and the dub fails to match it.
You mean aside from the fact that Makoto is intentionally trying to be more "girly" to try to overcome the issue of her tall height, which is a HUGE deal in Japan. How about the fact that Makoto never lets the world get her down, no matter how much it takes a crap on her? How about the fact that she's one of the most loyal people on the original version of the show and will be the first obstacle standing between her friends and harm.
Also, you can't just throw out a phrase like "Makoto's often played for comedy" when that also appliess to every other character. No, all the episode in Japanese better portrayed Makoto than the dub ever did. The dub just failed every character, period.

I could go on and on and on about all the faucets of Makoto's character, but that would take forever to do. Thankfully, I don't have to. Key of Nik does my job for me:

Everything you ever needed to know about Makoto spelled out beautifully.

I also like 80% of the dub voices. (Even Molly's and Luna's, though hugely inappropriate, are enjoyable still for the camp value.)
Its just the stupid accents they gave the characters is what ruined their presentation and the director being real lazy with the quality by getting their worst takes in just to get the lines over with rather than looking for the best version of the line as Funimation does it.

As for the new dub, I'm willing to watch a full episode before making final judgment, but so far I am massively disappointed/unimpressed. It may be more faithful to the original, but it seems like a poorer quality dub all the same.
Agreed. The acting still feels flat to me too. The hype simply over popular VA names is all that elevated it. The clips given from the new dub doesn't wow me at all really, the direction and delivery of a lot of what I've heard sounds relatively the da as the old dub to me. Just etter worded. Nothing really blows me away, especially as Stephanie Sheh playing herself behind Usagi's Face. I dont see it by any margin objectively better if Usagi still has a deep voice here as Naoko complained with in the original. Stephanie has that nasaly tone in her voice that sounds even worse than what people complain about with Terri.

What are you talking about? Usagi makes ONE remark about how it would be nice to be like Sailor V because then she would't have to school. She doesn't make repeated remarks about either Sailor V or school, and she certainly never uses Sailor V as a reason for her to not be in school.

And not only that but Crystal only has one episode out. Are we really comparing the character development of an entire series to that of a single episode?

If you're already familiar with one version, adjusting to a new one takes time. Not that I'm dismissing the opinions of those who don't like it, it's just that hearing new, unfamiliar voices coming out of the mouths of characters we've known for years feels weird because, well, it is weird, and it would be weird no matter the quality of the actors. I recall seeing a preview of the Azumanga Daioh dub and really not being sure about a lot of the voices; now I consider it an excellent dub, with really only one minor role that felt miscast, and Mandy Clark's Tomo, Kira Vincent-Davis's Osaka and Luci Christian's Yukari are among my favorite ever dubbed characters. But it did take a few episodes for them to really get cemented into my brain as the voices for those characters.

While it will take me time to get used to the new VA, from what I have heard thus far....I greatly prefer the original dub VAs. Terri as SM and everyone else were perfect. Though I prefer this new SM VA to Linda. And I know they are adpating it very faithfully, but I would still prefer to use the original dub names, since the actors sound very awkward saying their original names. Of course they will probably grow into but I dont see them topping the original dub VAs.

Having seen the first 2 episodes at Anime Expo, I like the new dub.
My only tiny nip pick is Michelle Ruff. I'm not a huge fan of hers.
Her Luna voice reminds me of her Ruika voice from the Bleach dub.
I'll get over it though. I'm sad hearing so many of my fellow Moonies
hating on the new dub, just because it's different. "I don't like the use
of the Japanese names." "I miss the dub names". "I miss the Dic music."
"I miss Luna's british accent". "I grew up with the original dub. The
new dub is just too different for me to like it". Please give it a chance
with an open mind. It might take some time to get use to it. If you
end up still not liking it, and have legitimate complaints, at least you
gave it a shot. I just ask that some Moonies stop hating on it just simply
because it's different from the 90's dub, without even giving it a chance.

I'm starting to feel like never having seen Bleach is putting me at a big advantage here. It would certainly be weird to hear a familiar character with the voice of another familiar character. Of the Michelle Ruff roles that I'm familiar with, she sounds the most like Etna from Disgaea, but something about her delivery here is reminiscent of Tara Strong.

It is so weird for me, growing up with the old dub and hearing the new voices (the name changes will grow on me, it's just weird to hear them with english dialogue). I actually kinda love Stephenie Sheh, she's not as annoying as I was expecting (so far), but Mamoru's voice was so off and just not right for me.

All from the sneak peak, so here's hoping after a bit it gets better.

I agree, we need to get with the times. But i'll be treasuring my dvd's of the first two seasons since they are my childhood and I imagine they will be hard to come by now.

It hasn't wowed me like the other voices yet, but personally I was pleased with it. At least as far as the tone is concerned. It didn't sound flat-out unlikable like some of his previous dub voices, and I think I actually prefer it to his new Japanese voice in Crystal. It doesn't quite match the unique quality Toru Furuya has to his voice, but it's the closest I've heard a dub voice come for one of his characters.

I'm really happy that NA is getting the dub it has deserved for so long. I've read about the massive cuts and changes with the old dub (never actually watched it aside from a few episodes), so I think this is a long time coming. I'm glad they're doing it.

That being said, I'm with those who say that the acting in those clips doesn't seem to be much better than the old version. Maybe the end result will be better, maybe it will be better down the line after they get in the swing of things, but it doesn't sound like they "nailed it." To me anyway. Not awful, but not good.

I'm mostly super excited about having Sailor Moon on bluray!

I think this is helping quite a few of us who aren't familiar with Viz's other stuff.

Yeah, I think not having seen Bleach helps. Thank goodness I only saw one episode years ago, and have only seen a few short clips since. :googly:

Being familiar with Viz in general doesn't hurt though. I've seen their Naruto, Tiger and Bunny, ect. dubs and it hasn't hurt my opinion at all. In fact it helps me since I know I don't have to be worried about dub quality, and actually makes me kind of impressed with how different some of the same voice actors sound here. XD

Couldn't agree more. 24 hours to the next episode though  :wow:

No, she references her envy of Sailor-V more than once.

1. She first hears about Sailor V from Umino. She thinks she sounds cool.
2. She sees the Sailor V poster outside Crown Arcade and remarks that it would be cool to be like Sailor V.
3. She says she looks like Sailor V after transforming for the first time.

And that's it. So.... No.
