PGSM senshi vs. BSSM senshi

So it's been on my mind for quite a while, and I'll take this opportunity to apologize right now if this has already been discussed {I'm not as frequent to the forum as I should be ::sob!::}...

Anyway, with the show as far along as it is, the characters have been mostly fleshed out and we can tell their personalities. And before I go any further, I'll say that my favorite senshi has always been Venus, followed by Neptune, but after watching all the episodes (or at least getting a synopsis from [THE HAPPY PLACE] or by death_charm), I've noticed that I'm liking some of the other characters a little more.

Personally, I've taken quite a liking to Rei/Mars. I've never really liked her in the anime or manga, but she seems to be a lot more likeable in the live version.

So, finally making my point, I wonder, does anyone else feel the same way (not necessarily just about Mars); do others find themselves feeling the same way, liking a senshi from PGSM that they didn't in BSSM?

Hmm. I pretty much like the senshi in the same ratio as I have before, just this time around I like them even more. It's cool what they did to Mars in PGSM v. BSSM (sound like a supreme court case to you? sorry I just had a test today). She's a lot more complex, and to be honest, I didn't like how she was more like Usagi in that she was into pop culture in the Anime, at least one of the senshi has to be somewhat serious all the time (and Ami doesn't count b/c she's coming from an academic point of view). Actually, Rei's my favorite character in PGSM. For the Anime I like em all a lot, although Saturn and Neptune the most. And I can't really say anything about them for PGSM since, well, they don't exist yet. So all in all, yeah, I agree with you.

I actually like anime Ami better than her LA counterpart  But I agree with theedqueen about Rei. Usagi, too - no more "klutzing out" every other episode, and she finally got a cool attack :D

Miyuu's Usagi is great. She's got the child-like innocence and heart to her without coming off as stupid, which the anime did a bit too much.

The live action made me actually like Ami. In the anime, she was an annoying character without much depth to her. PGSM has really fleshed her out; they've showed that she's not the perfect little bookworm she was in the anime. She's got her own fair share of problems and is actually quite vulnerable, but she has such an earnest heart it's hard not to like her. Plus, they actually gave her some offensive powers.

Rei...I was never really a fan of her...ever. PGSM's Rei is a little more likable, but over all, she's still kind of "eh..." Kitagawa's acting really annoyed me in the beginning. Her manner of speaking was obviously forced and her choppy word phrasing got under my skin. Over time, I've gotten used to it, and she's gotten a little better, but there's still a lot more to go before her character really grows on me.

Makoto is Makoto. I've always liked her because she was such a great friend. PGSM has given Mako-chan the shaft, but the times they do showcase her, she really shines.

I'm really not liking PGSM Minako. >_< I understand she's got her issues, but her personality is so dead. I did enjoy the few times she lightened up, like when she played that little prank on Artemis, and I hope it's a sign of what's to come once she becomes de-idolized.

Mamoru's still not all that interesting to me compared to the other characters, but my liking for the character rose in leaps and bounds when he said that he didn't want to betray Hina. It's very honorable of him, and that loyalty is a great quality.

The characters in PGSM have generally better depth than their anime counterparts, as in anime characters were generally archetypes, except some important moments.

Usagi is much less annoying in PGSM, her constant crybaby/clutz attitude got on my nerves sometimes. I like how they emphasise this "cheerful yet a bit sad" style she had in the manga.

Rei... it's difficult. On one hand, I like this distant, aloof style she shares with other "cold priestesses", like Arashi from X1999 or Kikyou from Inuyasha. On the other hand anime Rei was much more suitable for her element and guardian planet.

Ami. I never liked her. She's a smiling doll, both in PGSM and BSSM (anime and manga). I like the way she was jealous and turned evil though - it shows she's not completely a good girl inside.

Makoto is simply cool in PGSM. She was OK in anime and manga, but the choice of actress here is simply excellent. She could show her feminine side a bit more often though.

Minako - I didn't like the choice of actress on the first sight but I got used to it. The character herself is much more interesting. As much as I didn't like Minako in BSSM I like her in PGSM now. She finally has some depth, she's a cynical and lonely soldier of love (a nice contrast, isn't it!), a tragic heroine sacrificing herself for her mission.

I have to say that Mars has SKYROCKETED upwards in my opinion, thanks to PGSM's writers and to the actress who portrays her in this show! I never cared for her at ALL in the anime, and only "sort of" liked her in the manga! That being said, my top three favorites STILL remain:
1- Venus
2- Mercury
3-Moon
I really doubt those three will EVER be displaced! :D

That's pretty much how I see it, except with one minor alteration...
1- Venus
2.1- Darkury
2.2- Mercury
3- Moon

I certainly appreciate Jupiter a lot more ever since her first appearance.

PGSM Venus is certainly a direct contrast to anime Venus and that's a good thing! It's great to see the senshi of love and beauty take a more serious role in the series.

Mercury is certainly different and with the added personality of Dark Mercury, she certainly provides a unique perspective of her character.

Usagi's whiny and crybaby character has certainly been toned down in PGSM, which I kinda miss. One aspect which I really don't like is her serious moping over Mamoru and neglecting her friends at times. In ways, that would be uncharacteristic of her to do especially since she and Mamoru have not known each other for that long. However in Act 22, I really liked how she tried to talk with Dark Mercury in order to make her remember their friendship. It's one of the real aspects of her character that I liked. But I still miss her wailing and whining.

For some reason, I prefer anime Mars over PGSM Mars. PGSM Mars in many ways is similar to the chracter of PGSM Venus, but I kinda miss Mars scolding and making fun of Usagi. In the anime, Mars and Moon would often argue but in ways that would provide a much closer relationship than the other senshi. In PGSM, she seems to spend way too much time with Venus (which is great don't get me wrong) and at times Usagi would annoy her rather than vice versa, but one of the reasons why Mars was great in the anime was her close relationship with Moon despite their bickering. I don't really see that yet in PGSM...

My rank of favorites...

Venus
Jupiter
Mercury
Moon
Mars

I love all the characters a lot more than I did in the anime and manga. My favorites in the anime were the Outers. In the manga it was Usagi. But now I like all the senshi.

Usagi- I loved her in the manga. I liked her in the anime, too, but so many times I though, "Wow, what an idiot." The girl really could be stupid. The klutz attacks were funny, but they were overused. I'm glad PGSM Usagi is a little more normal. It's good that she doesn't have the klutz attacks because it's more believable that she could be a fighter.

Ami- I was indifferent to manga Ami and HATED her in the anime. She was just boring and not given attention in the manga. In the anime, she was still boring but she had all these pointless episodes devoted to her. The one where she was going to go to Germany (was it Germany?), the chess one, the one where she thought everyone hated her, the one where she didn't have self-confidence, the one where she became a mechanic, and the one where she started composing music. That was just too much!! She shouldn't have had any episodes about her because she was useless! All she cared about was studying, anyway. But in PGSM I love her! She doesn't have that terrible short blue hairstyle, she has episodes all about her but they're GOOD, she can actually fight, and she has a personality!

Rei- I like how they combined her closeness to Usagi from the anime and some of her personality from the manga. I didn't like her that much in the manga, but I liked her in the anime. I like her more serious personality better than her anime one.

Makoto-Not enough attention! She always gets the shaft in PGSM! But I still love her. Her acting was bad in her first episode, but it's gotten better. I loved her fighting with Kunzite. I hope she gets a romance with Motoki. Not much to say about her, since she's ignored.

Minako- I liked manga Minako a lot, and I liked anime Minako in the beginning, too. But she really started to annoy me in S. This annoyance continued through the rest of the series. I like that Minako is more serious in PGSM. It's not annoying for me because she has it so hard. She's an idol, she has a brain tumor, she's a senshi and has to pretend she's the princess to keep Usagi safe... poor girl.

Mamoru- I HATED anime Mamoru. What a cold jerk. He and Usagi would never have gotten together if they hadn't found out about their past. Thank God PGSM Mamoru is not a jerk and that he and Usagi have feelings for each other. What a novel idea, they actually grew to like each other, not just learned about their past and decided to go out because of it.

I wasn't ever really too big of a Mercury fan until PGSM...to me, the anime never really gave her enough character development time, she was just the nerdy girl. With what they're doing right now, they're really giving her character some much-needed air time, and showing how much she dislikes being left alone all the time. In the anime, it seemed like she just didn't care, she just studied all the time.
Mars is less of a spoiled brat than in the anime, which is nice as well. They're giving her more of a personality too...see a trend here? :P The karaoke episode was cool in showing that she can conquer her fears if she has to.
Makoto...well heck, we rarely ever get to see anything focusing on her! I do like how she's not lusting after all these guys because they "look like her old senpais". She's always been a strong character, and that hasn't changed much here.
Minako, I like so far. Of course, I AM worried about this whole "only 6 more months" thing...we can't lose a senshi! But I like how they're doing the decoy princess thing, which was completely disregarded in the anime. That was one manga thing I always preferred, except I really like how only Rei knows her identity.
Mamoru is pretty likeable, now that he got rid of that mullet! :D And got the mask upgrade. Not my all time favorite character, but by no means least favorite.

And what about the supporting cast?

Motoki is such a nerd...it's kind of a refreshing change from the anime version. What IS the deal with the turtle, though?
Queen Beryl and her Shitennou...wow. I have never really been in awe of them before, but I am now! Except for Nephrite, though...he was much cooler in the anime, at least he had a backbone and did things right every once in a while. Jadeite is...well, Jadeite! Zoisite is much cooler now that he got his costume makeover, dyed his hair, and took piano lessons. Can't express how glad I am that he's back! :) Kunzite is just so much more impressive in PGSM...he's really rocking the Dark Kingdom!
Oh yeah, and Naru...she's so much cuter than she used to be!

I think that's everybody...you'll have to excuse me, I just woke up...hoping if I can stay up later, I'll get act 24 faster! *wahhh*

I prefer the PGSM over the BSSM, PGSM is less redundant than the anime, I also like the fact that I get more attached to the caracthers, instead of moving pictures. Also, I didnt like the anime that much, since there's WAY too much fillers, that kills me off T.T

Okay, um. I'm really confused. I keep hearing people complain about how Mercury was neglected and undeveloped in the anime - but this is the character who got entire episodes devoted to her. She had a special devoted entirely to her. I know more about Mercury than any other senshi in the series. How can someone think that she's undeveloped?

Mako-chan, now. She is neglected. Poor Mako-chan.

I don't think my favorite senshi has changed at all from watching PGSM. I just like them or dislike them for more reasons now.

I have to say that i like the character development in PGSM better than the anime, too many filler episodes that really didn't develop the characters like filler episodes are supposed to do. I just get the feeling that they (writers/creators) gave thought to the characters on a whole before they started plodding along, because every episode moves at least one character along. I just feel more involved. And just because one has live people and one's drawn does no diminish the ability to bond, it's just with so few episodes it feels like they're giving a k.o. in the first round instead of the 14 round judges decision

@KerochanNoMiko: There was definitely more to anime Ami than "nerdiness", but I think most people found it difficult to fully 'get into' her character. (In Japan, on the other hand, she had even more fans than Usagi/Moon, IIRC.) LA Ami is quite different, and - understandably - more popular. Except for a couple of guys like myself, who just happen to like innocent, brainy girls

Here! Here! I like intelligent girls too! :D

In the LA version it seems that Mercury is the smartest, followed by Venus, then Mars, Then jupiter, with Moon at the low point of the totem poll, lol.

:( I think KerochanNoMiko is right in stating how Makoto/Jupiter is overlooked, even a bit neglected in PGSM (as she seemed to be a lot in the anime)!
Granted, she had a lot of screen time in Acts 18-22 (I thought she was THE star of Act 21), but she just seems to disappear at times for no reason! The Act where Sailor V becomes Sailor Venus poor Jupiter was not included, nor did we see her at all in Act 23 in the hospital scenes!
Granted, Venus also has a tendency to disappear for a while! The difference here, in my opinion, is that the writers of this show were deliberately trying to make us buy into Venus being the princess, and to give her an aura of mystery, they made her appearances relatively rare and dramatic!
I certainly hope Makoto/Jupiter will no longer be the "missing" senshi as we head down the home stretch of this story arc!

Ami just bothers me. Me an a friend were talking about PGSM, she did not like how Ami turned evil. She said because it wasn't like her. o.o;

I hate how Minako is potray in PGSM. She is too quiet or too mature. I really do miss the klutzy Minako in BSSM.

Yeah, I think everyone has already noticed that our heroic team is really fractured right now. I have only seen all five of 'em together once in this series so far. I wanna see more of the quintet! C'mon #1, you're practically the hub of this team! you brought all of the senshi together in the animé, you *have* to be able to accomplish that feat in PGSM!
