I actually never noticed that detail or considered whether people used projectors as TVs in the 90s
Goes even back as far as (at least) the 80s. We had a School Trip and watched a Bud Spencer/Terence Hill Movie on the Cinema Canvas in the Auditorium. So apparently there were already means of connecting a Projector with an AV source, 'Beamers' aren't that new of a concept.

Before that, there was something they called "Super 8". Primarily used for Amateur Filming but you could also rent (sometimes shortened) reels of TV series Episodes or the like until the use of Videotape became common and affordable. :ami:

I found out there were these things called "Rear Projector TVs" They became commercially available around the 70s

This specific one seems to be a front projection tv.

Maybe Mamoru had a giant clear fancy version of the rear model?

^ Sometimes I imagine myself entering the anime to walk around the streets & enjoy those scenes in 3D, while listening to those background music w/ my headphones - maybe someone would create a VR for that. :D
With AI this wish is pretty realistic! I really want a new video game that does that for us.

When AI has become smart enough & the user interface hardware cheap enough for everyone to use, anyone can create that VR environment w/ just my comment you quoted above. :)
