I think @sapphire91 is right that overall it won’t make a major difference since Crystal has a very clear established formula in following the manga closely. None of the story or pacing issues are going to change. However, I think there probably will be a subtle difference in regards to how scenes are storyboarded and maybe overall visual direction.

Kon’s storyboarding overall seemed not that great especially compared to Sakai (his one strength in Season 1 and Season 2). Her episodes in Season 3 were lackluster, and she didn’t even try with Eternal by literally copying each frame of the manga instead of trying to come up with her own compositions. From what I can gleam from the trailer for Cosmos, while the scenes are pulled directly from the manga there are some key differences so there’s at least that. There’s also certain scenes that seem more stylized than Crystal ever was like the one with Chibi Chibi falling from the sky.
To be honest i am not a fan of the chibi chibi scene - i can see what he was going for but it looks a bit lazy

Laziness is always what the Crysternal productions are characterized by, hence that's pretty consistent production-wise. :)

Even if the formula won't change, the direction really does set the tone and look. I really don't like how Elysion looks in Eternal. Kon turned it from a dreamy, almost abstract forest into a normal natural landscape. It's super basic, just like everything else regarding the art direction. I want some creativity, some originality and atmosphere. Takeuchi's manga gives a lot of space for creative interpretation, since her panels are quite minimalistic.

i personally think Naoko became more of a control freak with Eternal than she ever was with SM and Kon didn't have much creative freedom as a result. The fact that she's not returning may point out she was displeased with her work conditions or/and with how the movie turned out.

I think it is just scheduling, plus her work on season 3 was not much more inspired.

He seems to a established replacement for her, so do not expect much.

It was much better and a proper adaptation, you probably just don't like it.
It was better adaptation because it was in episodic format. But certain stuff were just as flat when it comes to composition and directorial choices. Her endings were abysmal - ok, the Eternal Eternity was cool Utena rip off, but the other two - the Chibi Usa one was super weird and tone clashing, and the last one was laughably bad when it comes to storyboarding or the lackthere off.

Just like the first director who put that nasty little post on Twitter before deleting it, lol.

Are the rumors true about how Toei used to treat their animators? Tadano said one time (I think she said it) they locked her in a room with other animators and they couldn't leave until they finished or something like that. It made me think think working on Sailor Moon as an animator was terrible.

Holy *****. If that's the case, why did she return to make SME then?

I translated an interview of her somewhere in a thread some months ago and she said that Toei rented an apartment for like one or two months and she lived there to produce the R movie. Ikuhara was there too but it’s unclear if he was full time with her lol.

omg whats the tea
I use to follow him on Twitter and I can't remember the exact wording but I clearly remember him expressing his displeasure for working with Toei. This was after Crystal. Something along the lines of he'll "never work with Toei ever for the rest of his life," or something like that. Letters were in all caps and ended in exclamation points. A little later that tweet vanished. He was clearly pissed with whatever happened. I figure working on the project must have been a nightmare for him.

I hear he's doing better things now though.

From one hellhole to another at MAPPA.
I don't wanna start any rumors guys and this is a vague memory I cannot back up but wasn't Yukie Sakou also doing something similar? Alluding it was not a very good time working for Toei? Maybe it is a false memory or I simply confused her with Sakai at the time.

Well, she deleted all Crystal related things in her twitter page. Maybe she did not liked working with Toei, maybe she couldn't deal with all the Crystal hate towards her art idk idk
Sakai at least says he worked on Crystal in his twitter bio

btw how good was suite precure? cause sakai directed that anime too
