^Opinion warning!^
With the reboot it kinda feels like you have to choose between no effort in anatomy (stick figure style) or a most of the time poor attempt at anatomy.
With that said the 90's anime wasnt perfect either, but it does scream very cheap in an age where toei is one of the biggest animation companies in the world.

It’s a problem that Tadano already had in the 90’s: she can’t give an elegant and mature touch to characters. If you think about it, characters started to be really pretty when Itoh took over the design part.

In particular Tadano’s design lack grace in the hip part. She insists that in senshi form, upper skirt part starts la bit upper to the hips, whereas Itoh clearly made the hip visible and the skirt starts lower, which makes them a longer torso part. Tadano used the same bad gimmick in Eternal and it doesn’t help make them more elegant and mature.

There is even a settei that I can’t find where she asks animators to draw this part specifically this way…

This is the design thing I’m talking about by the way. I don’t know why she insisted to make skirts that way.

Same thing about the ribbon instructions. It’s fun because Itoh incidentally drew those ribons the way Tadano didn’t want to, very oftenly in Classic and R.

Isn't there a video where she (Tadano) mentions why she draws the sailor senshi the way she does also? I could have sworn there was an interview that discussed something like that where she was saying something about male and female animators draw female characters differently.

I agree that Itoh's designs are very pretty, but they lack reminiscence of Sailor Moon (to me).
And while girls look childish in Classic and R, her male characters indeed have sexual appeal, especially Tuxedo and Shitennou, while their counterparts look so bishounen in Crystal. I don't like Mamoru's design so much in 90's.

How much effort they put into the 90s anime compared to Crystal!

I like the skirts on this drawing. Hisashi Kagawa draws them similarly and I like it.

I do
Look at their limbs. In SME, everything is so round, as if there are no muscle, and the hands are relatively small compared with the wrists, so I feel uncomfortable seeing them in motion. Not to mention that the hips in SME in wrong position. I'm not saying SMC3 is perfect, but the characters feel more "human".

Spoiler: show

like how the ones on top have what looks like better defined bodies. Like I can tell Jupiter has a little bit more muscle than the others. What I do like about them are the unappealing hair. Mercury's hair looks really odd. The Eternal version looks much more vibrant but and cleaner but I notice the bows look like they have less detail or something? I don't know I can say it looks flatter or something or has less detail.

Mercury looks younger too in the Eternal version kinda. Not so sure why..

She should work again with Sayuri Ichisi, the animation director of Wedding Peach DX OVA.

I just ::love:: this person's work on the OVA.

Wedding Peach DX was so gorgeous. I never finished watching it, though. Back when it came out on DVD I loved the series for what it was but when DX hit, it just felt off. There is no denying how gorgeous it was, though.

It sucks it has an open ended last ending. Beezelbub was an interesting villain and it looked like the show could've possibly have a possible season 3.

I'm in agreement. There's a flatness to the characters in SM:E due to the coloring/shading, mostly, but everything has this round squishy look to it. SM:C still had a problem with noodly limbs sometimes in motion, but the anatomy was better. I like how you can see the muscle/tendon in the arm near the shoulder in the SM:C versions.

I don't know what to say about Mercury's hair, though, lol. I don't think any anime has ever gotten it quite right. She always looks like she has a weird mullet in the 90s version, and while I appreciate the attempt at going more fluffy and lightweight in SM:C, it looks unkempt and disheveled. But then she looks like she's just soaked her own head and repented in SM:E because her hair is so heavy and flat looking. Sigh.

I know a lot of people didn't like the eyes in SM:C, but I miss the colors of the eyes. They stood out more. Jupiter's eyes look so flat in SM:E in keeping with the pastels with the rest of the production.
