Hey all,

Don't know if people watch Twitter but Marco Albiero tweeted a challenge to Discotek Media saying their covert art for Rose of Versailles Volume 2 was crap and that they should hire him instead.

Considering he's done work for Naoko and the Sailor Moon franchise he should know better than to insult other artists in public like that.

Bearing in mind that Discotek have spent weeks if not months getting approvals for that cover art from the original creators it's not on. That's NOT the way things are done in Japan. He should have done it in private...

you answered your own question. he's led by his ego and i hope that people don't defend his actions due to him making art for series.

Marco? I forgot about him. He's okay I guess even though I don't really remember everything he drew for the series but anyways, waiting for Eternal info, rrlease is literally taking an eternity... I see why they decided to call it Eternal.

An unprofessional act of Marco.
He "fixed" the original cover of anime The Rose of Versailles and tagged the producer into his tweet...
This dude is getting out of his depth. Sure, he can retrace, he can redraw, but it is usually flatter than the original. His cover art for Sailir Moon blu ray/dvd discks just screams fanart. Yet, he tried to get the character design position for Crystal and now this. Dude... I am sorry but Rose of Versailles is a masterpiece you cannot touch. It might sound a bit mean, I do not want to offend anyone, but... Is it ne or Italy in general loves to "fix stuff". Why bother dubbing the song for this or that anime, when we can make our own kiddy song. It happened back in the day with Rose of Versailles and the song is cringe, unfitting and horrible. Sailor Moon opening songs in Italian are just as cringe. Then even as of 2005-2010 they kept doing it. They dubbed Mermaid Melody and instead of dubbing the songs, they feel they are velow that, they replaced them with their own horrible ones, they probably feel proud of. They are great people, they gave a lot to the literature, classic music etc, but it doesn't mean you have to be so ready to "fix" something foreign . I have always found Marco being complerely flat. In rare cases he draws the characters ok enough, but then the composition of his art is horrendous. Be a bit humble, don't believe too much in yourself.

Well, it seems he deleted his tweet so I think I need to explain the situation a bit. :)
This time, he went too far by tracing the official disc cover, adjusting the style (like what he did with Sailor Moon) and he TAGGED the producer and said they should work with him. The artist who created the official cover came to said the author herself (Riyoko Ikeda) approved the official one. A lot of people got angry with his behavior, and he was like argue with every comment opposing him.

Apparently he did designs for Anime Limited's French releases back in 2015.

Profile - Marco Albiero

Simultaneously with the international relaunch of the anime, he made the drawings of the international style guide for the series “Sailor Moon”, “Sailor Moon R”, “Sailor Moon S”, “Sailor Moon SuperS” and “Sailor Moon Sailor Star” (2009) Backstage – Toei Animation. Naoko Takeuchi PNP.

He drew the illustrations of the DVD covers of the series “Captain Tsubasa“, “Captain Tsubasa Road to 2002” (2012), “Attacker YOU!”, “New Attacker YOU!” (2014), “Ashita no Joe“ and “Ashita no Joe 2” (2015) – Gazzetta dello Sport – Yamato Video and for the DVD-BlueRay “Versailles no Bara – Lady Oscar” – Anime LTD (2015).

I wonder if there was a different motive for this mess? The fact that he also tagged TMS Japan in that first tweet was also odd.

I hate this hack and this is why. You guys praised his traced artwork and now his head got too big.
Who exactly are you referring to as 'you guys'? It seems to me those in this thread aren't too thrilled with his work. :orly:

I like his anime-style interpretations of the manga art, but he's no one to write home about. I really don't understand why he was hired to do SM's covers and merch. He sounds quite arrogant.

Glad I caught this tweets, and the pics he posted, before he deleted them.

I think the first picture is the original key visual (which appears in the ED theme too), and the second one is the original cover of DVD volume 1. ( The Rose of Versailles (TV Series 1979–1980) - IMDb ). I'm not sure if he created his own artwork (and we couldn't find out), or he just traced those two.

the people that praised him? if it doesn't apply, let it fly.

He's totally bought into his own hype. I looked over his account and he retweets any piece of merch that he worked on saying "i made it" which is like... good for him, but its a self circle jerk. He's been this way for yearsss

Whether the opinions are praising or hating something, they're all acceptable here, & everyone is free to agree or disagree w/ them too - w/e your opinion is, just make sure it's not presented in an abrasive tone & doesn't sound personally aggressive/offensive to others holding a different opinion. :)

I have always found it bad. Apart from copying the drawings of the times and distorting the original work, he is not very talented.

His personal creations, frankly, not that great.
And his mania, of wanting to copy the official drawings each time, to limit saying: "Look at that, it's them! And that, it's me!"
I take it like that.

No, frankly. Stop farting, he has an oversized ego, man.

Absolutely disgusting and unprofessional. I am so glad Brady Hartel put him in his place, there is no excuse for what Marco did. I always wished Viz Media licensed original stock images for the SM Blu-rays and DVDs, and this news is yet another reason why.

This is what we end up with when nobody has guts to publicly call crap work crap. :pinkghost:

I say this Marco Albiero guy should be in charge of the entire BSSM franchise. Unlike Naoko, he wouldn't approve random outsourced artwork without bothering to personally check or fix anything.

It may not be nice but I like Marco Albiero as an artist and I would love it if he designed the art for Sailor Moon and other companies and yes alot of his stuff does look superior to many of Toei and other anime company's stuff. Hell I would give him a job to do art for Western series as most of us are sick of the SJW Calarts crap

That being said I do appreciate Naoko keeping a heavy hand on her franchise and while I don't agree with every move she makes her control will ensure we don't get things like a Noelle Stevenson Sailor Moon or Ta-Nehisi Coates, Mark Waid or Kelly Sue Deconnick writing Sailor Moon etc. Really just throw out Western fiction and let the land of the Sun Goddess reign.

animation =/= artwork
If you came with the bluray cover arts... but at least the animation can be fixed for the home release

And yeah, Marco's art looks very fan art and flat, they don't really reflect the original art from each season, I don't know why they keep useing them
