OMG you guys make me laugh so much !
By the way, his book has a Sato Junichi interview inside, did anyone read it ? Since the author of the book himself doesn’t seem to bother that much with rules and laws, maybe someone could copy this interview here ?

I foolishly bought a copy. The interview is the only decent thing in the book but that's not saying much. I felt like he didn't really ask any interesting quetions, and the interview is only a few pages long. The most interesting bits for me were:

• Sato claims there were never plans to produce a pilot of Sailor V. Work on Sailor Moon began as soon as they wrapped up Goldfish Warning. Which is weird, considering the proposal materials that popped up online recently. Maybe he forgot?
• Chibiusa was originally unpopular with fans. Junichi Sato was in charge of making her more likable in S. Probably explains why he directed episode 104.
• The initial ratings weren't that great, but eventually picked up. Had they not, the series would've ended after Nephrite's arc, with Mars, Mercury and Moon defeating Beryl.
• Mamoru being in college in the anime was a mistake. They got a memo he was an older teen, and assumed he'd be in college.
• Sato admits there are a lot of things they did back then that wouldn't fly today - the nudity, everyone dying at the end of the Dark Kingdom arc, etc.

I feel like they could have retconned Mamoru's being in college pretty easily. Just say he was a prodigy who got early acceptance. Bam, problem solved.

The problem with Toei's anime characters. They never look their age. Mamoru makes 20 year old guys or even older. Same for St Seiya, the heroes are supposed to be teenagers, just like the golden knights... they are all at least 30 years old in appareance.

It'd probably end at 26, but the course of the series would've been different. I'd imagine Kunzite would've appeared earlier, and the Naru/Nephrite subplot may not have happened.

It did always seem strange there was this trio only vibe to the group with just Moon, Mercury, and Mars. There was one picture I liked that featured just the three of them and it looked great as if it was just them only in the series.

I wonder would the show have been as popular (or nostalgic) if Venus and Jupiter or any of the other Senshi appeared?

Moon as the leader (princess and klutz), Mercury as the brains, and Mars as the power.

Meh, sounds kinda Weeding Peach like..

I wonder if that's why Ami and Rei appeared in Wedding Peach...? Lol.

The entire book is a joke. It's essentially an episode guide for the first season, with some pieces of trivia he's already discussed on his blog. There's also a glossary of terms and characters. It's not really a book for die-hard fans who already know who Usagi's freakin' home room teacher is. There are also tons of spelling and grammatical errors. I'd be less judgemental if it didn't take him four years and 9000+ dollars to put together. Fans who backed in on kick starter were pissed, and rightfully so. You're better off getting Warriors of Legend, or even Roland Parliament's book.

I'm not sure how exactly he got Junichi Sato for an interview, but his wife is a published manga artist, so I wouldn't be surprised if she had some sort of connections.

Oh thank god they changed it. Having just Usagi for 20 episodes would have made the series even more formulaic. She needed the other girls to play off of

I found it amusing Japanese viewers were apparently more invested in the resolution to Nephrite and Naru's arc and Nephrite dying than Jupiter finally showing up. A 4 percent increase from episode 23 to 24 and then a a percent drop for episode

And the single highest rated episode for series one was...the ice skating episode.

Interesting. I'll try to post the direct quote when I get home, but Sato did state in his interview that the ratings "weren't that great at first", though this information says otherwise. He doesn't really talk about how the toys affected the series' planning.

Slightly off topic, I wonder why they waited until R to release proper dolls of the Sailor Soldiers?

If they were uncertain about the success/longevity of the series, maybe Bandai didn't want to invest in making multiple character molds? Maybe they had trouble working out how to handle the hair and costumes?

That makes sense. I do adore the Henshin! Sailor Moon doll they made and wish they did the whole group.

Brazilian fan Leticia Cosmos also managed to get an interview with him, I wondered if he gives regularly interviews or is easily approachable (which would be cool).

I really wish Junichi Sato will one day work again on something Sailor Moon related.

What I don't quite understand is why during 1995-1998 Sera Myu was more popular than the manga & anime. There was a decline in popularity on TV Asahi, even though the ratings were incredible considering it's a magical girls show we're talking about, and in Nakayoshi as well, but the musicals were huge, especially Eien Densetsu.

I kinda want him to come back. He seems to have a deep rooted passion with working on the series.

That's quite interesting how Naoko never really got involved with them but that's not surprising I suppose.

I liked the change of Rei. She much more interesting and ambitious with enough fierceness to make her stand out in the 90's anime. I like her manga elegance as well and do prefer her less boy crazy side.

Because SuperS made older people lose their intererest in the franchise.
If that Moon Revenge performance by the 5 seiyuus from Christmas '93 is anything to go by, it had a huge male following and the musicals and general live action stuff were probably still seen by the otaku crowd as a opportunity to... Admire the characters.
