I have a friend who got into Sailor Moon recently.
He actually watches it with the Viz dub.
It's so funny, because I'm from Brazil and never heard of anybody getting into the show in English before. I told him he should watch the original with subtitles, and he goes back and forth between the two options now :artemis:

I'm honestly surprised anyone got into Sailor Moon with the Viz dub.

And this isn't even an attack on the dub itself, Viz just seemed like it never did court new Moonies. Just people who remembered the show from Toonami

I knew a few people who only did it because they hated subtitles and the Viz dub was the only thing readily available. A friend of mine was so annoyed he couldn't watch the last season in English, he found illegal copies of the Spanish dub. He was very confused when Usagi was suddenly being called "Serena." P-:

Pretty based of the Spanish redub to keep the old dub names

He watches through Stremio, and Viz English is one of the options available.
What shocks me the most is his liking for Vee's take on Sailor Mars. He actually likes it more than the original, but I guess that's because he got used to the English dub first.

So he got to watch the viz dub. I am glad to see he experienced the actual story. Though dic and clover way I think deserve credit for making sailor moon popular , viz tells the story the way it was meant to be by the anime producers. Both options are good as some things can be mistranslated.

Wow I did not realize it has been that long.

It is absolutely ridiculous that it took this long. One of the things about SailorStars is that a lot of people don't even know about it - it never aired in their market and not everybody was doing deep Google and Wiki dives on SM to find out, like folks like us may have done. And as long as they let it languish, it's almost just as invisible.

That part. Assuming we'd just buy it. Buy it again in many cases lol. Chile, nah.
A lot of people don't even know there WAS a new dub. I'll go to play it and they are literally shocked.

Believable considering the reactions to Eternal on Netflix last year, there were people who grew up with Sailor Moon that didn't know Crystal was a thing and that had been out for 7 years with a decent amount of promotion before each season's premiere so it was probably the same for the 90s redub.

Oh yeah Sailor Moon Eternal was the first time I saw Sailor Moon getting any kind of attention outside of Moonie online circles since circa 2001. Idk if that's more attributable to Netflix being a stronger streaming power than Hulu or if Toei is just better at getting the series marketed than Viz.

Yeah, the SuperS dub went up in late September of 2019.

The Sailor Moon SuperS dub is now available to stream on Hulu | Sailor Moon News

The ironic thing, Canada got the Stars dub 2 years ago when the entire show went up on Crave.

Crave to stream Viz’s Sailor Moon dub in September
Wow so Hulu announced it on their Twitter, I am glad to see it, getting the hyped it deserved.

So the super s dub was up since 2019, long time to wait on stars. Also Canada getting the dub three years before us, that is weird, they must have bribed them with some maple syrup eh?

Yeah I find it nuts that most people don’t even know that sailor stars exist. They don’t know about sailor galaxia or princess kakyuu, the starlights. Also don’t know about the insanity of the last six episodes. I know that stars is not loved in the anime version but it still memorable for the final six ones. Also the first arc with queen nehelenia is one of the most beloved among sailor moon fans.

At the same time I shocked it never aired here in the United States. I wonder what would have happened with the last six episodes, if they would have said instead of being dead they were sucked into their star seeds and were captured again like the first arc. Lol

Hell no.
That was just Netflix.
I would say that was the first time Sailor Moon gathered attention in Brazil since like 2002, but the late release of the manga in 2014 got a lot of buzz surronding it. That and Crystal was pretty much a relauchment of the franchise here, but that was all due to publisher JBC and Crunchyroll having faith in their product. The Japanese had absolutely no part on it. Actually, all PNP did to JBC was being an absolute pain in the neck to their plans.
I know you guys dislike Viz for shoddy video releases and their attempt of erasing their old dub. But Sailor Moon getting all the way to cinemas, like in the 90s? No other Western country saw it, even in limited releases. They did a good job at keeping the franchise alive.

Strange , I’ve been watching the dub and the picture quality is way better than the sub. Is this why viz had them listed separately instead of just offering the option to switch languages in real time ?

I believe the entire sub collection was completed during the time Viz's video had those famous issues, which are not limited to Freezeframes to make it look digital (the most common one, it was a meme back when it got pointed out.) this was way before they got the better video.
