Please forgive me if my memories are failing me, but didn't TOEI and Naoko have negotiations in the early-2000s about a new "Sailor Moon" anime with the working title of "Sailor Moon World"? I believe reading headlines about this, perhaps rumors made up by fans, in the early-2000s.

What I do know is that fans were expecting a big announcement in the early-2000s, a new anime, but, to much of everyone's surprise, PGSM came out, a tokusatsu, not a new anime.

Thus, my question: were there negotiations about a new anime in the last decade, or am I just mixing things up?

A conspiracy I have is that TOEI wanted to reclaim and recreate "Sailor Moon" during that era and since they couldn't do that... they created a highly successful knock-off, Precure.

And since we are discussing this topic, would you support TOEI completely reclaiming "Sailor Moon" and doing whatever it wanted to the franchise without the approval of Naoko, the creator?

Just a fun discussion. No hissing, please. :luna::artemis:

To be honest not really. I'd prefer the franchise to go to Naoko myself. I can't help but think Naoko would put more care into her creation than TOEI.

Honestly i dont think any of them should get SM for their own as i dont reallly trust any of them.

After the "golden era" of popularity in the 90s both Toei and Naoko didnt show that much love for SM in my opinion.
Naoko did new cover art for the manga rerelase and some really amazing re-drawings....but she clearly gave up after the Black Moon arc.
Toei did PGSM however not only the special effects were rather cheap but also in the second half of the show they had some terrible ideas like Sailor Luna or Princess Sailor Moon. Not to mention those were also approved by Naoko aswell. Also both parties clearly ignored that PGSM more than likely wouldnt go outside of Japan so that kinda showed them not caring all that much about the international fanbase at that point.

The 20th annivesary was probably the best for the merch but aside from that?
Crystal had so many terrible decisions that i dont want to even go there. Sloppiness, mistakes, inconsistency.... We'll see how Toei will handle the rest of Crystal but so far its not a great picture.

And Naoko? She did some new covers for yet another manga rerelase... and thats it. No redrawings this time around. Also remember that brand new artbook announced in 2012? 6 years later and still nothing.

I hope they can both get their act together but i think none of them really would handle the franchise better on their own

I mean... She did do /some/ redrawing for the perfect edition of the manga, as well as some re-tweaking of dialog, but just not to the same level as with the previous re-release. And the blame for new artbooks still not being out yet lies mainly with Kodansha. After all, the new artbooks were just supposed to be re-releases of the original ones with a few new illustrations. Naoko has certainly done plenty of new illustrations, so for those new artbooks to still not be out means Kodansha isn't doing its job.

Would I support it? Maybe the old Toei. I mean it's basically because of them Sailor Moon is popular today. They gave us the characters we love and remember. I'd like to know more about the contractual agreements between these two parties though and just exactly what gets axed. I'll never know though.

I'm sure Naoko is comfortable in her position to the point where she doesn't have to extend SM. After all, she's a millionaire or something now right?

Naoko did an interview with the french magazine Animeland in 1999 where she confirmed that a Sailor V OVA and a wedding themed OVA were in production. I’m assuming those got scrapped and retooled to fit PGSM since we got those straight to video releases instead.

Forgive me here, but doesn't Japanese copyright law give moral rights to manga creators until their death?

Are there any significant differences between her drawings in the perfect edition and the 10th annivesary one?
Im not sure if Kodansha is really to blame with the artbook since they released Perfect edition no problem and now they're even releasing pocket version of the manga.

I’m pretty sure Sailor Moon World was just a brand of merchandise that was released in the early 2000’s.

However, I do recall there being a lot of rumours swirling of a new anime called “Sailor Moon X” which was going to be based on Sera Myu plotlines before PGSM was announced.

This - it was very much a Bandai thing, & had nothing to do w/ Toei (nor Kodansha). BTW, Mara stole & modified its logo for his SMF forum (as this site was known before its being taken over by Xadium earlier this year). lol

I would have loved if we got those OVAs especially if they were canon to the 90s anime. It is a shame we didn't get them.

That would have been awesome. I always said I would have loved if the 90s anime made new seasons based off the original Sera Myu stories like the Kaguya Island arc, the Dracul arc, the Dark Sirius arc etc.
