Takeuchi was pretty good with the nightmare fuel. It's a pity it never made it in animated form. There used to be a great Sailor Moon gallery called "naked and melting" or something like that. It had caps from the manga that featured nudity or death scenes.

Yes, Naoko was pretty good when she intended to scare or inflict pain on her characters. The "Black Moon" arc has images of rotting, decomposing corpses.
I have a theory that a couple of times Naoko hated and was deliberately mean to her characters because they stole part of her life (...yes, she was making money... she made a fortune... but she did say that she felt like quitting because the franchise exhausted her).

That's probably why she always wanna kill her characters - she just wanted them all die. 
BTW, I'd like to see her writing a horror manga.

Ah yes, Nephrite's story: getting stunlocked after sticking his head out from cover for no good reason, and then melted with Supreme Thunder. Not to be confused with Jadeite's story, which is getting stunlocked and then melted with Fire Soul.
The shitennou actually do kind of a lot of melting!
Then there was that time Kunzite froze people to death(?) on Tokyo's waterfront.
And that time Koan burned a student at Rei's school to death!!
And as previously mentioned, scenic Crystal Tokyo.
Or how about monsters bursting out of students' bodies at Mugen Academy!?
The manga pretty much IS a straight-up horror story in my opinion... makes the anime seem tame by comparison.

To be fair, I write some pretty grim stuff myself (more so when it comes to original works than fanworks, because I don't like straying too far from the original tone if I'm doing a fanwork except maybe to make it really complicated and continuity-heavy/exceedingly referential like how Star Wars movies constantly pseudo-reference earlier films), so, I really can't fault Naoko Takeuchi for this wild direction. If anything it's kinda interesting to me!
I do like the manga, even though I'm going on about how much more strongly I like the anime. The manga is full of fascinating concepts and memorable images and it has the raw components of Sailor Moon. My only real reason for not being quite as enthusiastic about it is the far fewer amount of sympathetic villain portrayals and much briefer character development that often happens, I feel like characters rarely get any time to slow down and talk and think their lives through in the manga because it's more like a warzone where people are getting blasted (and melted) before they even know what's going on. Shoot or be shot kind of a thing, with a bunch of confused teenagers. But it is really quite grim that way.
