Hmmm.. I wonder if this could even be considered an alternate season 4 to the original anime? Retcon sequels are all the rage right now (Halloween 2018, Terminator etc) so I wouldn’t be opposed to a movie that works as both a sequel to Crystal and a replacement to SuperS that is more in line with the manga.
I think you can think of the entire Crystal series as an alternate to the original that’s more in line with the manga LOL

I really dislike the designs of season III and I am very happy that it's gone. My only complaint by now is, that the senshi look too young. I only like it for Chibiusa, she looks like in the R season. That spoiled brat, haha.

As always, in upcoming material (promo-pics, actual animation,...) they might look slightly different from what we got today. It can't go totally wrong from now on.

This is possible again:

So I did a very quick photoshop magic and made the eyes and mouth smaller and lowered the nose. I think she already looks older and better (lost a bit of expression because I didn't change the eyebrows.

for me takahashi was the best and season 1 was by far the worst (seriously, it was ugly, and don't say me "it was faithful to the manga" naoko takeuchi is like Kurumada, she is bad at drawing and an anime adaptation need to chang the visual style")
movie design are just too much like an update of the 90's anime they are so generic

original anime and season 3 of crystal all the way for me, season 1-2 seem lifeless and have big proportion problems and season 4 have just no style, they seem like bad fanart

Well, those comparisons are tricky. They depend on which pictures you chose to compare.

From those above I prefer Tadano 90s design, because the girls look determined and more mature then in the S4, where they all smile. I really don't like S3.

I'm looking forward to see more material from the new designs.

BTW: Naoko Takeuchi has been credited as supervisor! Did that happen in S1-3? Is it good? Is it bad?

Hate to be that guy, but that Photoshop job is not great. There is nothing wrong with this promotional image.

Honestly, kinda shocked how many people are so mad about the line work... despite the fact that these are clearly from character sheets and were never meant to be zoomed in that far. The anime will definitely not have wonky line work. Really now... The only face that bothers me is Usagi's but it's perfectly fine in the promo image of her and Chibiusa.

GUYS. They're from animator reference sheets...clearly.

They were taken from the character design sheets, so no wonder the lines are wonky.

I really hope we get to see some more illustrations in the coming months. If they're willing to show off the character designs and release a key visual, they're probably getting ready to do the marketing for the movie.

Who greenlit these designs and how can they justify the two years they spent on them. Cringe! Where is the so called Naoko vision in these design? I cannot believe they went from designs suited for a movie, and end up with a movie with designs for cran game for toddlers. Worst art possible, lets remove all the hair details. They are 15 year-old kindergardeners now.
I can't believe they made the characters look even younger and more moe than they did in season 3. The designs (and the linework) look so poorly made and amateurish. Does this seriously look fine to people?

In the meantime, I just still can't believe they changed the title of the project. I mean, I guess "Sailor Moon Eternal" sounds better than "Sailor Moon Crystal: Season IV: The Movies: Dead Moon Circus Part Une," but still. Will anything ever be consistent with this franchise apart from its inconsistencies!?
It's so inconsistent, it boggles the mind. If it were a new adaptation, the title would have made sense but this is a direct continuation of SMC. You can't change titles in the midst of an ongoing adaptation. That's madness! Not to mention, "eternal" alludes to the Stars arc, not the Dream arc. It's just so dumb and frustrating.

Do you think this will be the last of Sailor Moon anime we'll ever see?
I sure hope so.

What surprised me the most though was the addition of "Moonlight Densetsu" in the background. Can that signify anything?
It signifies that a probably bad rendition of the song might be included in the movie(s). I don't get why people would want that. I'd rather get a new song.

My wife came home just now and we saw it together. This are our thoughts combined. The characters look way too young, and these is clearly a major lack of detail on the designs. What we both like, however, is the eye shape - they are round a evoke manga/ 90s feels to it. But what I hate is the rosy cheeks, they were present in Seasons III designs as well as some gloss, which evokes to me a very early 2000s henatai/ fan service art to me and something Chiaki Kon is particularly fond of. Then - the noses or the absence of them, is at least for me very very moe like and jarring. I cannot imagine how the profile (side) shots would look like. Ami looks very off - the sloppy eyes they usually give to her in every iteration of the art look very ugly here. The hair on all of them is very basic anime style hair with solid color and no shadows. In general the designs lack shadows and because of that they lack depth. I find it just lazy, it doesn't look like the 90s, nor Crystal. It has some good elements like the eye color being not gradient, but the presence of these rosy cheek, like of noses, the strokes that are supposed to be eyelashes, the rough line work, the lack of shadows/depth and the wide mouths combined give me the wrong vibes.
I agree with all of your criticisms. Most fans are just so desperate for more SM content, they'll take anything. Even if the characters were literal stick figures. I don't see anything '90s in these designs. They look like bad fanart someone made based the '90s anime. That's it. Just because these designs are a bit better overall that the ones in previous seasons doesn't mean they're good. Have higher standards, people!

Wait, people are already complaining?

/QUOTE]

Also, this trailer sucked. It didn't show anything. It just revealed the character designs.

But at least now we know we're getting something.
Not sure what you're trying to prove here.
