Watch the blu ray versions of the Sailor Moon movies and you will e surprised how ugly stuff suddenly got to be there with more detail in high definition available. These ugly shots are though distant shots and some low skilled animators worked on them and here they let everyone available do whatever they can. If you look you will see all these ugly faces are in season 3 as well, but the derpy design it becomes a lot less distinct to the on model shots and less distracting . Toei has always made some bad and cheap animation sequences, but with a better schedule they utilize their talent better. Te same stuff worked on season III, but they had better schedule and a lot less ambitious designs to work with.
yeah i saw that too, and watching the 90s anime seasons too XDD
mh this is not a problem only in toei or sailor moon crystal other anime have but the people only do it with toei animes or crystal XD, even the ones you think dosent have XD like sakura cardcaptor clear card XD i saw some shots too that some other people posted in a page and most of them are corrected in bluray
oh madoka magica have the same problem XDD the tv version was very soso and in some points horrible well it become popular have the money and well XD the blurays with all the details it looks like another anime XDD

Madoka never had ugly frames, just unfinished backgrounds. It is common with Shaft to change backgrounds and make stuff even more weird for blu ray. I actually like tv version of Madoka more. They overdid the crazy a bit. Sometimes i feel like dedicate weeks on final cut to combine the best parts of both versions into one ultimate version.

Otherwise it is common with anime to have some wonky distant shots but I have seen the Sailor Moon films so many times and on hig def I noticed them a lot more. This is what happens when something was not made with higher resolution in mind.

I'd say Madoka was pretty wonky in the beginning (OBVIOUSLY nothing remotely close to Crystal when it was aired as an ONA). Since before being released on blu-rays, it birthed the meme of meduka meguca.

Honestly, most anime will half-ass distance shots because it makes sense. Why would you pour resources and manpower into making a sure a character that's far away from the ""camera"" look impeccable? The only people who will notice are those with eagle eyes or fans who will rewatch an episode a countless amount of times.

I think people expecting PERFECT animation and no off-model shots from Eternal will inevitably be disappointed. Toei works on too many projects for it to make sure every detail is flaw free AND the perfection. If it's on the level of a good Precure movie, then I'll be satisfied.

Nobody expects perfect looking product from Toei, but with this simplified style it would be inexcusable if they come up with something similar to their tv films... Knowing them though I won't be surprised. I too wpuld be happy if it is on the level of a good Precure film, but I don't know how the lenght would affect the quality and the budget. They are taking their sweet time not showing any artwork still...

I just want the movies to be at a level where the low quality doesn' interrupt my experience watching them.

I also hope some great artist with a huge imagination will draw storyboards, backgrounds, locations etc. I prefer beautiful and atmospheric static animation over generic fluid animation. So I prefer interesting light/shadow moments where the animation is minimal over flat but dynamic.

I bet the movies will remind us a lot of the 90s anime. I guess Toei is going to press the nostalgia button and go the safe way with SME.

They do correct movies of needed, but it is rare as usually a lot more care is put on a movie project and the schedule is not so tight.
As for Crystal not being the only one anime with problems, you are right, but I haven't seen anything quite like it produced in 2010s. Most anime has bad frames here and there but is usually consistent with the designs. Crystal is all over the place having at times 5 different artsyles per episode. :D This is unlikely to happen in a movie.

I would assume the shading and highlights.

I looked at some of the frames in Act 17 on the original Crystal and I am surprised how wonky they are. I thought they were a work of art when I first saw them... I still liked the storyline though.

Act 17 was one of the most edited for blu ray and yet they kept Usagi using the wrong attack. I hope fpr the 10th anniversary of Crystal they release a new set of blu rays and this time fix the crap of them. Sadly it would never happen.

I can't give you the answer, but I also have a question regarding this. What do the different colors mean?
It's for coloring.
The lines look so solid and clear.
They also showed us some keyframes drawn by pencil of SMCrystal. If they have to line those pictures again on computer, after they are already lined and cleaned up on paper, it would be a huge amount of works.
I don't know about the case of Violet Evergarden. However, look at the videos of Crystal, the frames were probably lined and cleaned on the computer.
I have a belief that the wonky frames in episodes 2 were done directly on a computer without a pencil sketch. If you draw a character on paper, it is very hard to make such a wonky and off-model picture.

Thanks for the video. I also think they didn't handdraw the faces first. It seems like there were limited keyframes and the staff the was hired for cleaning the handdrawn keyframes had to draw faces all of a sudden and they did it straight on the computer. Probably those "digital cleaners" don't even have an education in drawing. That would explain those off faces, because even a super tight schedule and a tiny budget cannot produce such ugliness.

Watching PGSM I understand more and more that the concept of Crystal is bad. In PGSM they took advantage of the live-action medium and adapted the Dark Kingdom arc in a good way, added a lot of new elements to make it fresh, added original material that wasn't represented in the 90s anime (Rei's relationship with her father). They took the story of the manga to a new level, without disrespecting the source material. It's two different products and they are both well done. Crystal is mostly just inferior to the manga, being a badly animated version of it.

A new Sailor Moon series, more faithful to the manga, both in storytelling and design, could have worked, could have been amazing. The low prioritiy of the project, budget, bad animition, writing and directing, made it a disaster. If Toei has budget issues, they should have started from the beginning with the movie format, retelling the manga story, creativly and originally written, with the 90s designs. It would have been a huge success, as I'm predicting it for the Sailor Moon Eternal movies. When we just not simply see our 90s Usagi again on the screen, but when we recognize her, it will be a success.

They didnt hage budget issuesthey had scheduling issue. They announced the project despite they were already too much projects. They delayed it twice and after they had to release something. With all the freelancers and outsorcing plus the blu ray fixes I wont be surprised if it was one of their more expensive projects for all the wrong reasons. I cannot believe somebody tracing these ugly frames and not fixing or saying something. They clearly skipped a lot of steps to make it in time.

It seems that the voice actors and the musician worked with the draft version. They acted or wrote music without seeing the finish product. Meanwhile, the animation was done in another department until the last moment.
With 52 key animators working for episode 2 and episode 20 (that FAMOUS group), don't tell me each of them just draw frames for 30 seconds of the episode!?

He hasn't been on any poster since season 1. If Chiaki Kon decides to follow the path of SuperS, it will be no surprise that he won't take part in the last battle. :wow::wow::wow: I believe that is the only time he transforms into Tuxedo Mask in Dead Moon arc.

I highly doubt they will announce something about the release date till the franchise anniversary in February, but some more art would be nice, they should at least post these character sheets on the official site by then.

They left the character part of the 3rd season blank. XDXDXD
