I completely agree it is almost as if key animators do inbetweens and inbetweeners are in charge of key frames. This has been a thing since act 1
or key animators do the close ups and the inbetweeners the full body shots, bc the close ups look almost all good, but the full body shots not.

In the speech of SMC3, each picture just lasts for 1 frame. It means 1 second = 24 pictures.
In SME, sometimes a picture lasts for 2 frames or 3 frames. And her odangos are so... ugly.

There is a lot to polish, but how realistic is it that they will touch that material again? Some people speculate that they already spent the budget for movie 1 and finished production for it, so it’s unlikely. What do you guys think? I mean, after the shitstorm on youtube they can’t just leave it the way it is. right?

I highly doubt they will fix anything beyond some color mistakes or stuff. I believe the first film finished production earlier this year, so they are already working on part 2. If they have any intention to fix something it won't concern actual animation, but more in the line of fixing Mercury's brooch, and minor stuff like that. I doubt they care about these youtube comments.

I’m quite indifferent to the transformation at this point. I’ve watched it sooo many times and there are parts I like and dislike. I do like the new speech and I still like what I’ve seen from the trailer. So I’m hopeful. I was watching parts of season 1 - 3 of crystal and regardless of your preferred characters designs there is such a clear jump in quality that I trust chiaki and the new writer to pull something off that’s at least as good as season 3 if not potentially better. Not a fan of the 90’s pandering but if they keep following the manga as closely as possible we should get separate transformations for Chibi moon and sailor moon. And with Naoko as supervisor I’m sure her focus is that it’s shot for shot her manga.

What def got better in s3 is the frame composition. S1+2 had really ugly and empty looking scenes, even at the grand finale with metallia. best looking episode of s3 for me was the tellu episode. it was outstanding.

i agree on the skirts, they look very flat. i wonder if it’s because the color gradient effect and the technique they use to make it.

I find the new skirts way better compared to s3 dorito skirts, but very basic in comparison to Sakou. Still Sakou‘s skirts were rarely animated properly, so these are an ok compromise. Overall I find the style pretty, we are all used to low quality animation with the franchise, so indeed all that matters now and could save the show is the story. I found the art in s3 horrible, but as an adaptation it worked for me so I still enjoyed it.

Basically it is nostalgia. And when most people think of the 90s show they have Ikuko Itou in mind or one of the animation directors who were good at imitating her. The 90s show has so many different styles, some very simple, others quite detailed. It really depends on tge AD in charge. But styles never changed from scene to scene. Each animation director back then made sure they look in style e for the episode.. In Crystal styles changed like crazy at times in one scene. With tgem announcing a film I expected the characters to be in style and don't change their appearance every 5 seconds. I guess even with simpler design it is still impossible for these animators. That is why I wanna know who is the Chief Animation director and Animation Director for the films. I am pretty sure it is not Tadano nor her husand, sadly, as they seem quite busy with another project with Deen.

Crystal and Eternal haven't even got her odangos right at all, just perched in the middle on the top of her head, Naoko's art and the 90's anime had them on the sides of the top of her head, which looks more believable.

I see all these posts about people warming up to the new transformation now that they’re used to it.. and for me it’s the opposite *facepalm!*

I was one of the first defenders and while I stand by my initial impression that it’s really not that bad at all, the designs have started irritating me. I think the faces and skirts are much better than S1 (too angular and huuuuuge skulls) & S3 (nobody knew anything about anatomy when doing face profiles), but the body shape here is what makes it look a bit sloppy.

I understand not wanting to sexualize a 16 year old character anymore, but they can still give Usagi some curves. Here.. her profile just looks like a quick rough sketch. To top it off, her head design is pretty big compared to her body, which makes her look even more juvenile. She looks way too young here and they had to make ChibiUsa even younger looking in comparison.. Yes, in the 90s and S1, they looked like they were in their 20s and that was pushing it, but they are about 16 now, and could at least be depicted as so.

Anyways, that’s my main gripe now. Hopefully it’s just in the transformation and not the full series. They do look more or less fine straight on..
