It is valid, they do kind a look a bit similar, but to be fair they did in season 3 as well. They they look distinctive on character design though doesn't mean Toei's animators won't give them the same face treatment. :D
Luckily, in the Tellu episode the animator reduced the character design by Takahashi to a minimum so it looked good.

Well, he/she is probably the same person who did the nice stuff in s1 and 2. Let's hope they use more of him/her in the films. Oh and s light change of subject - I really hope they skip the speaking kaleidoscopes. This scene always makes me cringe.

I love the talking Moon Kaleidoscopes and Mercury Harp, but the girls have almost zero reaction to them, none of the other weapons display sentience, and it's a plot point that goes absolutely nowhere. I would love to see an adaptation really explore that part of the manga because I genuinely find it so fascinating, but I don't see these movies having room enough to do that concept justice.

Exactly, it goes nowhere and the reaction doesn't make sense. Usagi had so many sticks before and none of them were talking. It felt odd as it wasn't explored and featuring it will make no sense at this point.

The background characters on the train when Motoki chatting with Reika were creepy, especially the old man. The seems to come from another anime, not Sailor Moon's universe. However, this is one of a few episodes I think the key animators really spend time sketching to make proper frames.

So did every background character ever since season 1... You do realize the animation director draws just key frames and important scenes, right? :D plus most Crystal episodes had two animation directors and it shows. Plus during s1 and 2 Akira drew the main characters as characters from different anime as well. All the time.

I really love the 1st and 7th episode of SMC III (directed by Akira Takahashi). All of frame were drawn carefully and looked acceptable and the animation was very smooth (and the animators of this episode knew how to draw a skirt). However, the inconsistency with SMC1 - 2 and the effort to distance it from SMC1 - 2 (the eyecatch pictures, the logos...) made it a jarring experience for me. As a whole, I think it was a loss.

BTW, anyone noticed the feather in the logo of SMC4, after the katakana text? They decided to return to the same old Moon symbol.

I am not very familiar with the manga, but what's the story behind the power-ups / weapons the inner senshi get? Mars gets it from Phobos and Deimos in human form and the others from the sailor power guardians, mini-me's that look like them? This is also something that goes nowhere and just adds more and more chracters to the plot where we already have to deal with so many characters (hello @ the hobbit movies with trying to give 13 dwarves a personality so we care). I understand that fans want to see humans forms and all the details of the manga, but honestly, many of those things just open plot holes. I'd prefer that Rei get helped by Phobos and Deimos in raven form (maybe they just make the attack that looks like like their human forms made of light or fire, but without letting them speak). But then...the others get the power-up from their sailor guardians...it's quite inconsistent.

Wow if you didn't mention I would have never seen it. It takes some effort to spot it indeed. As much as they wanted to distance s 3 from 1 and 2 they used the same title cards, if they changed everything else they should have changed it as well. That side shot of Usagi doesn't look at all as s3's side shots, side shots were the weakest part of s 3 as a whole.

Yeah, it's definitely inconsistent. Usagi and Chibiusa just got Mamoru to buy them kaleidoscopes, and then those kaleidoscopes magically turned into sentient weapons. The thing with Phobos and Deimos is that in the Stars arc, they're revealed to be from another planet, and were recruited by Mars in her past life to be her partners. I'm hoping that they include that backstory when they give Rei her Mars Crystal and new powers since I feel like it makes more sense to put that in there so that it won't come out of nowhere in the Stars arc instead.

As a whole I don't mind these inconsistency. It would have been better if all of them got their new weapons in different ways for once. Ami is the one with whom the Mini worked. Minako from Artemis' s human form. And Makoto would be a bit hard. But having them get power ups with different ways would work as something more fresh. And less repetitive.

I have to disagree that Crystal S1 & S2 looks anything like their Manga counterparts. I seriously do not see it and wasn't ever a fan of those designs... I guess what we see is subjective though, those designs were not of my personal aesthetic for a SM series.

It is hard because the manga itself has so many art variations. But at least s1 and 2 tried to base the desigjs of the Eternal edition. The old show tried as well for the time and limitations. And season 3 of Crystal didn't try to base it on the manga when it comes to aesthetics. They followed the manga closely, but a lot of stuff from designs to costumes deviated from the manga. And the whole point of Crystal was to adapt the manga. At least on the key visual of the new art it shows Tadano followed the manga design more caccurately and fixed everything season 3 changed. Akira removed the gradients, changed the tiaras for Super Sailor Moon, didn't use the Mistress 9 manga costume.

Yeah I don't know...with Mars and Venus it makes even a little bit sense, but it seems like they ran out of ideas so they introduced the guardians. I prefer how Mercury got her power-up all by herself in the 90s.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Sailors stay with their weapons until their eternal power up? Like Jupiter's wreath of oak leaves could remain permanently in her hair.

I would like to see how they receive their weapons. In the 90s anime they were just there, suddlenly, with the new attack. It would be nice if they got those weapons/items. And Toei/Bandai could make some cash selling replicas :eyebrows:

Well...Naoko is supervising that whole mess. I guess the screenwriter will find together with her some solutions (that make sense). And based on the manga does not mean they can't add stuff.

They have to show Rei's crows doing something and it really gives her character a unique quirk and makes her more interesting. She basically was just so..meh in Crystal sometimes. My favorite episode for her was her birthday episode in season 3. We should be thankful they aren't going Pretty Cure route cause those weapons would be talking like glitter gerbils or something.

I mean this could turn out amazing. I know the 4D attraction isn't the same thing but I enjoyed the transformation and hope we get some like that. I'm sure they are making them look young for a reason but I can't be sure how to trust because Kon is a part of the time.

Oh yes, that one was a really good episode, probably together with the Tellu episode my favourite one of season 3. The episode was well written and well animated, had some great action, mystery and funny moments. The only thing that I criticized was that Eudial got killed too quickly.

Interesting! They admit that in Japan Crystal did not make it that well. So I guess that means from now on they try harder to please japanese fans. Good! Very good :)

By the way...does anyone also not love the new SM franchise logo? It's just too girly for my taste. For me, the 90s japanese logos were the best.

The international ones just are all awful...

I liked the german logo. They used it right from the start. Interesting that they used a heartshaped brooch, even if they couldn't have known anything about the brooch from the S season back in the days.
