This is my opinion on the matter. This is pure speculation so please do not repeat it anywhere as facts. Precure is mainly targeted as children. It has a lot of product placement in the form of potential merch. I assume its budget is higher as manufacturers like BANDAI are part of the production and funding it at least partially. Sailor Moon Crystal started as an ONA, progressed as late-night anime and now a movie series. It was targeted primary at young women, who grew up with the old show. As the target is different so is the merch, so is the funding. While Sailor Moon produces a lot of merch as well it is more expensive, targeting a smaller market compared to Precure. Also it is more expensive. As the target is smaller, so is the pool of manufactures, and so is the funding. The only way for Toei to give it a Precure budget would be to target it primary at children. For some reason they didn't go this route. I am personally happy as I do not want a watered down kiddy Sailor Moon version out of this reboot, plus the strength of the franchise is nostalgia. For me the main reason Toei didn't target it as kids is the fact they cannot produce as many toys out of it. In the 90s they came up for several anime only items and redesigned them specifically for that reason in mind - to make toys out of them. PreCure on the other side is cleverly designed to produce completely new set of toys, plushies and merch.

Sailor Moon Crystal has different sponsors, it is targeted at different age group and the merch is more expensive and has collector's value.

When it comes o international market Precure as far as I know is no match to Sailor Moon. But I guess they really care more about the domestic market. And this is pure speculation but I think Bandai is sponsoring it and most likely invest a lot in it to make toys. Pretty Cure is created with selling toys in mind way more than Sailor Moon. We have different girls each season with different items, we have the cute faries to turn into plushies. Sailor Moon has a few items and three cats. Of course they make a lot of merch, but Precure is merch machine.
PGSM was allegedly sponsored by Bandai, wasn’t it? If memory doesn’t fail me, I remember seeing a Bandai logo.

And it was a morning broadcast targeted at kids. They also came up with all sort of things they can sell as products. I am not saying that BANDAI are not sponsoring Sailor Moon. I just think they are a lot willing to invest more in PreCure now.

This is pretty much spot on and is exactly why Sailor Moon fans who come up with these theories that Toei is sabotaging Sailor Moon for Precure have no idea what they're talking about.

I will say though. If Sailor Moon wants to be relevant and not die out in the next few decades, I think a new reboot in a few years aimed at kids (while still keeping the elements that made adult fans love it) is not a terrible idea. I think this franchise needs fresh new blood.

mh thats quite good that main happen, i remember back then when the reboot was announce it said toei wanted to make it more a kids show, you know for merchandise etc but the author wanted something more like the manga aka so we have this tone in crystal, i know they still censor some parts

and in the 90s sailor moon was more target to children, so i think somethings where add for merchandise, and they did some of that with the live action, so they add some sailors weapons than only the attacks

i glad it didnt go the kids route because i wanted to watch the manga animated i know they turned down some parts and i love some of this new merchandise than if was targeted for children well xD i dont know if i still brought it

pretty cure is for children so it have much more merchandise and if sailor moon was for children again it will be a competition with pretty cure and i dont know if later toei think and didnt wanted that, is their product like some people said with pretty cure toei can play around with it all they want and with sailor moon not

At the begining I was part of these people that were thinking Toei are doing Sailor Moon dirty on purpose to not create PreCure any competition. Now that I think this is so silly. They simply decided to have something for a different target audience. Most jousei anime don't have the budget of a kodomo anime or shounen, which is normal, considering the smaller market, but Toei probably wanted to have something for this target. And why not using a well-known name for it. I wonder how it could have turned out if Chiaki Kon was the director from the begining. Sadly we will neve know.

Sailor Moon was as much of a hit as Precure once—200 episodes, 3 movies. Bandai sold a lot of merchandise.

Then the show ended, TOEI tried to revive it as a live action, it failed, then Crystal, and now the movies.

I agree that if Sailor Moon wants to be relevant again, it will have to re-invent itself.

And the 90’s version of Sailor Moon was aimed at children—but it was a more intelligent show that also appealed to a broader and more diversified audience.

I also don't want a watered down kiddy version, I want the adult women version. Adult women have higher standards and expectations of entertainment / anime then children. So the quality of Crystal should have been high. If the budget was tiny, then they should have made from the start only a 6 episode series or movies right from the start, with better schedules.

Why not, sure!

But overall the franchise, especially the anime side, needs quality. If the target now is adults, then give us something adults can appreciate and enjoy. If Crystal had been a good anime, it would have increased the fandom. I would never recommend anyone who wants to watch some anime Sailor Moon Crystal. It‘s bad!

Usually anime targeted at older women sadly has lower than average quality. I guess it is not as lucrative as seinen

SMC is really not that bad you guys....
I agree. From a casual viewers standpoint the first two season are just mediocre. Season 3 I solidly enjoyable. And who knows about the movies. But from a sailor moon fans perspective, mediocre is a travesty. Which I understand. My question is why??? Regardless or pretty cure sailor moon is beyond iconic as a property. Dbz gets money, why not sailor moon? Sailor moon make millions and millions a year on mercy and on 100’s or collabs. Uniqlo, Anna Sui, hot topic, UO, sketchers, colorpop, shieshido, etc. Sailor moon makes a ton so why not give it a proper adaptation. It blows my mind. I think it’s comes down to (And I hate to bring it up) that sailor moon is for Women. Dbz, digimon, Pokemon, they all get better adaptations but sailor moon doesn’t. Even pretty cure doesn’t look at all like it used to. The fights are terrible now and the quality of animation is just as basic as crystal now. It’s just bs

I really have to agree with you, it definitely does appeal to a wide array of age ranges, it was more universal for audiences to watch. As opposed to Precure, where I feel the storyline is for a 5-year-old. Not for teens/adults, however that is their demographic which is why I can never be interested in Precure.

My theory, and I am speculating here, is that if “Sailor Moon” belonged to TOEI, then TOEI would have turned “Sailor Moon“ into what “Precure” is today. Maybe TOEI would add mature storylines that would appeal to all audiences, but I believe that creating a ”Sailor Moon” knockoff to sell toys was the intent.

Sailor Moon Crystal is not that bad but could have been done better in some parts. Ill still watch it but right now I'm watching PGSM again because its enjoyable. I really enjoyed the scene where Ami snapped on Rei about talking about her mama..lol The interactions between the girls in that show are so good.

I'm not a huge fan of Pretty cure either but the show is done well for its intended audience.

I'm ready for the Eternal movies!!

Crazily enough, back when it first aired, when I was like an immature 18-19 year old I thought it was the worst magical girl anime and probably had such a huge hatred of it because of my great disappointment and great love of Sailor Moon, but 12 episodes of Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka made me realize it isn't (plus even the art Crystal has isn't that bad now that I see it, there are plenty of shots that look fine but would need a little fixing, but I feel the movement is choppy oftentimes, mostly because of too few frames drawn), but I still don't think Crystal is good because it didn't get rid of flaws the manga had and sometimes made some flaws worse, and the manga and even the new musicals from 2014-2015 Petite Étrangère and Un Nouveau Voyage were better. Even the NogiMyu ones from 2018 and 2019 I'd watch any day over Crystal's take on the first arc.

Going through that awful SHITennou X Senshi side arc makes season 1 terrible especially that Metalla death ray scene. :quagmire: The one thing manga fans wanted and they botched it. From what I've heard the musical La Reconquista does it right.

Season 2 is at least enjoyable especially :mako:'s episode. Despite the inners losing and getting kidnapped at least they had time to shine. Also I liked that certain frames in the later episodes the character designs look similar to season 3.
