Tadano really did a good job designing Eternal Sailor Moon. No disrespect to Katsumi Tamegai though, an amazing artist and they had their work cut out for them translating a costume as elaborate as that, but the colors and proportions were totally wrong. There’s a delicateness in Naoko’s design that I think Tadano managed to capture even though it’s not 100% accurate either.

Do you think they will tweak it a bit more for Stars? I also thing it looks nice but something is off, can you share what you think is lacking in the costume. I like Tadano making the skirt a tad bit longer, it is soo short in the manga and would look so creepy in animated form. I think the skirt itself could have more frills, kind a like they were in season 1-2

Tadano‘s color palette is so much more pleasant to the eyes and it really gives the heavy loaded design some lightness. The detail that I don‘t like are the glitter/rubber sleeve pieces.

I agree that Sakou‘s skirts would look best in the eternal fuku.

The rubber dress and sleeves are annoying. However it seems that the eternal dress has stronger and thicker material, they do not fall down like ordinary form.

I think the biggest flaw in Tamegai's take on Eternal Sailor Moon is the proportions. He clearly tried to keep them the as close to Naoko's original sheets as possible and it didn't quite work out imo.

Like, notice how long and lanky the limbs are, combined with the super short torso. Tamegai used pretty lanky proportions when working on the series, and I think it would have been better if he tried to mimic Ikuko Itoh's anatomy instead for this. (And like, maybe shrink her sleeves down a bit).

Still, it's very faithful to what Naoko drew here and the only real difference is the brooch, and the heart on the choker being changed from pink to gold (probably for better contrast.)
The other differences like the V-shaped chokers and the shade of red on her ribbons becoming more pink-ish happened later on. You can't really change designs in an anime on a whim way down the road like you can in a manga so that part's not Tamegai's fault.

With Tadano's version, she got rid of the super long limbs and balanced out the proportions. As better overall as it is, I personally wish they didn't remove the little crown on top of the brooch, add weird sparkle effects to the gloves, and make the sleeves transparent. I also think Tamegai did a better job with the skirt, earrings, and the wing-shaped bow in the front.

Is Tadano going to get her face hidden in this interview ? I don't know why but in an Eternal promo previous video, her face was hidden by a "sticker" on the video. It's not like we don't know is her face, several pictures where published.

I was watching Code Geass movies yesterday, it fun to see this design sheet because it really looks like Code Geass, particulary for characters who don't have big eyes. I would have worked if proportions were a little less off (characters were too tall and too thin). One positive thing about Sakou's design is that her males characters were quite good. And male characters were most of the time kinda nicely drawn (you can tell they enjoyed drawing shitennou or Diamand ^^).

I totally hated Eternal form before Eternal movies. But Tadano's version is quite good yes. Making bubble sleeve smaller and transparent gave more lightness to the silhouette, and the general color palette is way better. In Stars' Eternal form, blue was too dark (a general problem in Stars though), and yellow too vibrant. In Eternal, it's more tonned down and elegant.
Her skirt is a bit lower too, it makes her torso longer. In the old version, it looked like skirts were starting way too high on her belly, around her belly button. In Eternal, her waist is less thin but it seems a bit more realistic.
Sakou's skirt would have nicely worked with Eternal uniform, but way too much detailled. This 3 parts skirt is a real pain to draw, they had to simplify it a lot (and Eternal fuku has lot of other details that make animator's job hard).

Did Tamegai redesign Inners and Outers in Stars? If he use Naoko's body proportion for only Sailor Moon, it won't fit with other characters, right?
He made character sheets for the outer's super form (and iirc, they had giant legs), but nothing for inners. Anyway for old characters, I have the feeling that each animator did whatever he/she wanted, nobody really cared about graphic cohesion in this season.

The Eternal Inners and Outers were designed for Tamegai by Takeuchi(which ended up in Eternal) and it was already part of the preproduction of Stars as hinted in the Artbook but TOEI decided to drop them after Ikuhara left, I just wonder if Tamegai had concept art of the Eternal Inners, Chibimoon and Outers as well.

Tamegai is amazing animator, but for me it was weird on their part to not let Itou do the designs for Stars. I still cannot understand why they replaced so many people for Stars. Ikuhara left, so what? He was more interested to go his weird way, but why replacing some animation directors for some really bad ones is beyond me. Stars had some of the ugliest episodes and it suddenly felt like a completely different show.
