I've looked all over the site and found very little discussion on the musicals and not a single thread specifically for discussing them. They just so happen to be my favorite form of Sailor Moon, so I decided that needed to change right away! If I am wrong and there is already a thread that didn't turn up when I was looking for some reason, just direct me there and I'll close this up quietly.

The Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon musicals, called "Sera Myu" by some fans, were a series of musicals based on the stories of Sailor Moon (and even a few original stories!) that ran from 1993 to 2005. Many talented people came together during the series' long twelve-year run, and it began the careers of quite a few idols, such as Kawabe Chieko (the second to last Mercury and PGSM's Naru), Kanbe Miyuki (the third Moon), and Kuroki Marina (the fourth Moon).

Unfortunately, the musicals are currently on an indefinite hiatus and are not likely to return anytime soon. One can buy most of the productions on DVD and VHS, and CDs of the soundtracks are also available. If you're interested in watching the musicals with english subtitles (or just want some more information), here are some links to helpful websites! IMPORTANT: If you love the musicals and Sailor Moon, please show your support and buy the CDs and DVDs as well as downloading and watching them online. It's what Usagi would have wanted!

eternal.legend- An extremely useful database with almost all the information you'll ever need about technical information like names, dates, and places. When I get bored I sit for hours refreshing the home page and looking at the cast pictures!
Sailor Moon Fansubs- One of the best sources for Sailor Moon downloads of all kinds. Has fansubbed versions of just about all the musicals and related videos.
Miss Dream- They've subbed a few of the musicals and written a very comprehensive guide to all of the shows- very useful if you're new to them. They've also translated a few programs from the musicals and other various materials related to them.
Sera Myu Antics- A great resource. Lots and lots of downloads (including audio tracks from musicals whose CDs weren't released!), a sweet image gallery, tons of information on the musicals and anything related to them, and even fun goodies like demotivational posters and comics. If you poke around on the forums you can even find the Ninja Yell musicals, a project directed by and starring Ono Hikari, who played Sailor Star Maker and Prince Demande among many others. Ninja Yell features several other recognizable figures from the Sailor Moon musicals as well.
WikiMoon- A reference for just about anything Sailor Moon, including the musicals, in the popular wiki style. WikiMoon is an ongoing project, so like most wikis, many pages there can still be considered under construction. If you can fill in any blanks yourself it is always highly recommended that you do so!

If you're at a loss for what to talk about, here are a few topics!
~ The age old question- who was the best Sailor Moon? Do you prefer Anza's passion? Fumina's dignified portrayal of the heroine? Miyuki's energy? Marina's cuteness and development? This can get controversial sometimes, so please respect the opinions of your fellow moonies.

~ Which was your favorite show, and why? Which musical had the best cast? Story? Songs?

~ Your dream musical! Describe your ideal musical- what's the story? Who's playing who? Be creative!

~ Talk about your favorite actors. Who was the funniest? Who was the best singer/dancer/performer? Anyone you find attractive?

~ For those who really paid attention to detail (or are just really into theatre), discuss the technical aspects of the shows. What were some memorable costumes and sets? Did any shows have particularly effective lighting? What about sound?

~ Did anyone here see any of the musicals live? If so, we'd love to hear about your experiences! Otherwise, talk about any memories you have related to the musicals.

Re: The Sailor Moon Musical Thread

They're great! If you see yourself having the time and dedication to watch them all, I recommend watching each of them from beginning to end, starting with Dark Kingdom Gaiden and finishing with Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu Kaiteiban. If you just want to watch a few to get a feel for what they're like, I recommend any of the Kaguya Shima Musicals, Eien Densetsu, Mugen Gakuen, or the Black Lady musicals.

Re: The Sailor Moon Musical Thread

Ohh, big Sera Myu fan right here. Translated a few of them actually, allow me to shamelessly bump:

1996 Sailor Stars
2003 Mugen Gakuen
2004 Starlights Ryuusei Densetsu

I used to hate Anza and mock her by calling her "Man-za" Moon, but she's really growing on be. Marina is probably my second favorite -- Fumina and Miyuki just don't do it for me.

1st and 4th stage musicals are probably my favorite, but Black Lady is also entertaining.

Thanks to Yen-sama's butchering of Knocking Down Hesitation on the Miss Dream podcast i have that song stuck in my head now. ^_^'

It was my first time hearing that song as the only musical-related tune i've heard before that one was La Soldier.

Re: The Sailor Moon Musical Thread

I love the musicals! Myu and the manga are tied for favorite form of Sailormoon for me. x3

My favorite Sailor Moon (in any form ever, not just musicals) will always be Anza. In my opinion, her voice is the strongest and most beautiful, and her acting was spot on. If Usagi were real in our world, it would be her.

My favorite musical is "Yume Senshi, Ai eien ni... Saturn fukkatsu hen!"

I loved every single song, I loved the plot, and the original Saturn actress was just so great. The laser Pegasus was also very cool. x3
I also loved the little circus act that went on, hehe. =)

Anza and Mochizuki, in my opinion, had the best chemistry. Their love felt so real, I almost half expected to find out that they had been going out in real life! They were just so perfect, the two of them. =)
In First Stage, the stories and songs were the best, and overall the actors were better too. There were a few later ones that I love (Kenji as Tux, Yuhka and Takagi Nao as Neptune and Uranus) but overall, the actors were definitley better.

I do like the later stages too (Though I will say, I wasn't impressed by the Dracul arc at all. I like Miyuki, but I just didn't like the storyline. Also, on the exception for Chieco Kawabe after the first part of this story arc, all of the inners were just awful. I kept cringing during their solo songs. x_o; ), but first stage will always be number one. x3 <3

You didn't list any of your favorites, Ella~~ Tell us yours! <3

This is what I want to do, but it is to my knowledge that not all of them have been subbed. I know that they can be watched in nearly any order as there's little continuity between them, but I'm of the stubborn kind who prefer to see all of something both in full and in the order it was made. ^_^'

I'd just need to know what's been subbed thus far, by whom, and the quality of each one.

Re: The Sailor Moon Musical Thread

I like Marina the most as Sailor Moon. Not really because she's a great actress, but because she's sort of dorky and can't sing very well, which is how I imagine Usagi. Miyuki is a close second, but she's really really pretty and I picture Usagi as being more "awkwardly cute" than "pretty".

Favorite musical: Gaiden Dark Kingdom Fukkatsu Hen. It has a "so bad it's good" factor that never fails to make me giggle. I WILL MST it someday.

My dream musical? Umino: The Musical. Not picky about who plays Umino, as long as he gets to serenade Naru during it. I don't care what anyone says, Umino is a total dreamboat.

Also, Kenji > Yuu. Haters gonna hate, but yeah. :3

Re: The Sailor Moon Musical Thread

Elly- Yes, I've seen that before! I love your work.

Neo Moonlight- The first stage really did have a charm of its own. Marina is my favorite moon, but Anza is a VERY close second. SuperS Kaiteiban is one of my favorites too, since it has some of the best songs and a nice cast- and it introduces my beloved Hikari! Ironically, the Dracul arc had some of my favorite overall casts. I'll probably make a post with all my favorites after reading a few more opinions.

Sabr- Not true! The only shows that haven't been subbed are the ones that were never recorded in the first place. Most, if not all, have been subbed by Cruel Angel Fansubs. Elly at Miss Dream has also subbed a few at her site (linked in an above post), and I've seen subs by innocentami floating around the internet. More people have definitely subbed them, those are just the ones that come off the top of my head right now.

Prince Rose- There are a few S musicals- there's Ai no Senshi E no Michi from 1994, Last Dracul Jokyoku from 2000 (though it's actually the beginning of a whole other storyline with a few S elements mixed in, like Professor Tomoe trying to awaken dark forces and whatnot), and the Mugen Gakuen musicals from 2002-3. The latter ones might be the ones you're talking about, since they follow the manga/anime arc the most closely (and are also really awesome).

Schizzy- I love Marina  My favorite thing about her was that we got to watch her grow up throughout the course of the musicals, just as we do with Usagi in the anime and manga. I was so confused when I first watched Dark Kingdom Gaiden, especially since it was the first musical I ever watched xD "Wait, didn't they say this was their second time fighting them? Why are they just reenacting the end of Classic?"
Oh god, I would love to see that. I think Yoshi would make a lovely Umino ;3
As much as I love Yuu, he had no chemistry with Marina. On the other hand, I loved the way she and Kenji interacted- he seemed to kind of play along with Usagi's crazy antics while remaining the dignified Mamoru we know. I think that if anime Mamoru was a teensy bit less serious he would have had the kind of relationship with Usagi that Kenji and Marina had.

Okay SO! My favorite Moon is definitely Miyuki. She may not be the best singer, but she has the Usagi personality down to a sport. I saw Last Dracul Overture in 2006 and I fell instantly in love. My second favorite Moon was Anza. She definitely recreated Usagi and incorporated some of her personality in as well. She's funny and definitely the best, acting-wise. She makes great facial expressions too, and she just puts her entire self into the musical. I swear I cried when she cried while she sang Tabidachi in FFS Senshuuraku. Fumina is a great actress too and very lovely, but I think she would have made a better Michiru or Hotaru if she was a little younger. Her performances seemed forced. Marina is my least favorite. She's cute, but I think that's all she really has going for her.

I believe Yen-sama wrote a big article breaking everything down, including the subbing issues, which may be a useful guide to you and anyone else new to the Myu scene: The Ultimate Sera Myu Guide

@Ella: Awesome! Since the site is fairly new I always feel like I've gotta PLUG PLUG PLUG because I'm not sure who has heard of it yet or not, haha. <3 Thanks for visiting!

I follow moonkitty.net religiously, so I mostly found out through Brad mentioning you guys once a week or so in his updates. Also, I'm bookmarking that guide right now.

Anyway, here are my favorites :3

My favorite moon is definitely Marina. Anza takes a close second, then Miyuki, with Fumina bringing up the rear. I stress that I think all four of them are talented young women who each brought something very special to the character. After I finished Eien Densetsu Kaiteiban, I was certain I wouldn't love any of the other moons as much as I loved Anza. She just seemed like the perfect Usagi to me- with the emotion poured into her acting, her lovely voice... she was just so committed to the character. She is still my favorite in terms of raw talent. As I continued on through the later musicals, I thought I was right- neither Fumina nor Miyuki impressed me as much as Anza. That's not to say I didn't like them- Fumina brought an interesting personality to Usagi and she had good chemistry with both Mochi and Amano. Miyuki's enthusiasm was almost contagious. Her voice made me cringe at times, but she certainly has her charm. When I imagine Usagi in real life she looks like Miyuki. Then I watched Marina for the first time in Black Lady- and I was shocked. Sure, her talent wasn't nearly as developed as Anza's, but she was pretty impressive considering she was only slightly older than some actresses who had played Chibi Moon! I feel that she had a special connection to Usagi that developed over the years that she played her. Even now, I feel that Anza and Marina represent two facets of Usagi- Anza would be the mature, selfless Usagi we see by the end of Stars, and Marina would be the clumsy, naive one we see for the first few arcs.

My favorite show is Black Lady. I feel that this one had the best story and pacing, an incredible cast, and some of the most memorable songs of the entire run of the musicals. My favorite overall casts were Mugen Gakuen (so many of my favorites in one place!), Transylvania no Mori Kaiteiban, and... er, that last Miyuki one. I always forget the title.

My ideal musical would be a Stars-type musical with Marina as Sailor Moon and Anza coming in at the end as Sailor Cosmos. A duet between them is a must. It would have Mamoru double cast between Mochi and Kenji, since I thought that was a great idea in Fumina's shows. The Shittennou would be played by various former Tuxedos, like Yuu and Amano.

My absolute favorite performer in all of the shows is Ono Hikari. Hilarious, beautiful, talented... sometimes I wonder if I've fallen in love with her. I will never understand why some people say that they would rather have had a man as Hawk's Eye or Demande. There are so many other people I could talk about, but this post is long enough as it is.

As for technical stuff, that's admittedly hard to pay attention to if you're not seeing the show live. However, I think Mugen Gakuen and Black Lady were both really effective at using the available resources in creating the proper atmosphere for each scene. I also cry when I see clips from Shin Densetsu- whose decision was it to use such gloomy lighting in every single scene?! I really hope something was broken in the theatre or something.

One bit of info missing: 1996 Sailor Stars musical marked as "Miss Dream is in the process of subbing this musical." was fansubbed already in 2009 by MessyCookie and released on Youtube: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=11307

Apart from that minor detail, the article is very good.

I didn't mention them because their youtube account was suspended and no other copy of their work exists anywhere else to my knowledge. It's pretty much vanished from the internet
