I think redblade's post shows what is worst about Viz.

While Toei can has and shut down fan videos and clips, they were a lot slower about it (even when Content ID was implemented) and often left things that did not use the original animation alone.

Before Viz entered the picture, when some people worried that if Sailor Moon being licensed the act would cause fan projects to be shut down, others dismissed this talk as paranoia.

Well, you got a new dub...at the cost of existing fan projects. Viz has shut down things that don't even use existing assets just for existing. People have created fan animations that cannot be seen because Viz filed a copyright claim on things it doesn't even have a copyright on.

Viz is probably using their distribution rights. As in, "We have the exclusive right to all Sailor Moon content distributed in the US." Hence the geoblock rather than the takedown.

Other ways Viz sucks:

- Botched upscale attempt

- The R movie DVD/BD cover

- Misspelling "Guardians" as "Gaurdians" in one of their promo videos

- Never commenting on social media about the multiple screening disasters re: their release of the other movies

- Never doing anything to promote screenings of LMF (it may not have been their project, but it's still Sailor Moon, show some support)

- Announcing their re-dub cast at the same convention where the original dub cast was having their big 20th anniversary reunion panel...without telling them in advance. What should have been the original dub cast's big moment to celebrate their show was undercut by Viz's shady, tacky actions.

I don't get the hate.

If Funimation had gotten the rights, I think people would complain about Funimation just as much as they do about VIZ.

I think VIZ did everything it could possibly do to release "Sailor Moon" in North America.

VIZ is not a mega studio or distributor like Disney.

Also, TOEI was not fair. If TOEI had been fair, it would have given VIZ better masters.

As for selling BDs, I assume that VIZ had to create a product that felt "luxurious" to make up for the money they spent licensing the series + the new dub.

I mean...did you read everyone else's replies to the thread? Particularly Memento's just two posts above yours? P-:P-:

I get the crux of what you're saying, though -- Viz did the best they could. But this thread was made because there is another thread pointing out the flaws of the first English dub/licensing, so it's only fair to have the same type of thread for the new version.

In general, I agree with you that Viz did the best they could for this release, but that doesn't mean their capabilities can't be criticized. Their upscales are weird and I believe they lied a few times about their upscale process (or at least they were indirect about it). I'm personally not a huge fan of their dub.

You're pointing out some accurate things, but you're also not really addressing what other people have said in this thread. Like, nothing that you're saying is speaking to the list of issues Memento pointed out, or the whole copyright takedown thing being discussed by Nadia and Redblade.

So I watched Funimation’s Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies 2010 redub.

Why do I bring this up?

Because it sounds like a professionally put together product even though the movie and music is from 1986 but the audio is from 2010. Which was apparently the excuse for why Viz’s redub of Sailor Moon sounds like a cheap fandub.

So no Funimation has its problems (their funimationnow app is a trainwreck) they would have but a much better product together.

I think VIZ did everything it could possibly do to release "Sailor Moon" in North America.
It’s a shame that was poorly handled.

And only the movies poor release schedule can maybe be blamed on Toei

- The R movie DVD/BD cover

Admittedly we were spoiled by Pioneers gorgeous VHS/DVD covers for the 3 movies

But still

Which reminds me of how lazy and tacky the S movie cover looks and that was my favorite cover of the Pioneer releases

I dislike the use of Guardians in and of itself but that seems to be a Kodansha thing

What?

Now I hate Viz even more than I already do

Why are people blaming Toei for the video quality? So many countries have released the remastered version of Sailor Moon and none of them had any of these problems. Why would Toei give decent masters to Italy, France, Australia etc. but give VIZ crappy materials? Why did VIZ deliberately posted faked bad quality images supposedly from R2 for comparison? They have been the same masters as every one else, but they had no idea how to upscale, crop and color correct properly and went cheap on it not hiring someone who does. The dub itself though is not bad and this is the only aspect I can't understand the hate.

In terms of “translating” its mostly fine. Even if some stuff is a bit too literal.

In terms of sound mixing and voice acting? It’s pretty bad

Actually let me correct myself the voice acting isn’t bad (except Shingo) just flat and too understated and lacking in variance and the poor quality control doesn’t help

Yeah, bad direction + bad sound mixing + badly written dialog + numerous mispronounced names and words = the bulk of what makes the Viz dub awful. While I do think some people should be recast, most would probably be giving much better performances with better scripts and better direction.

Mary Long starts talking about it around the 54 minute mark.
Kind of off topic, but Mary Long has a great voice. I wish they didn't have her exaggerate it so much, because she could've brought some awesome voicework to the series. I could've liked her as Catzi if she used a more natural voice.
