Toei's recently stepped up their youtube activity for a lot of things. They've been removing Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball material pretty aggressively as of late. Some of the stuff they took down's been up since 2007 and such.

It probably doesn't mean anything for the franchises themselves, just that Toei decided to step up their game on youtube. Perhaps new management in that department.

They've also been taking down videos related to One Piece & Pretty Cure as well.

Does it give us a *small* hope for continuation of SeraMyu in the future?
Deep down, every fan has a glimmer of hope, even if it's false.

Very true. A little flexing to remind people who's "in charge."

What did we do to deserve this? Next they will probably remove PGSM... This is torture... It is not my fault that I never found out about Sailor Moon until 8th grade...

Don't feel bad, there's a lot of us with very fond memories of the show from when we were kids. For North American fans at least, and most people aside from Italy and Japan, youtube was our only way to watch.

And then Toei dangles it in front of us with this global revival thing, but ultimately seems to do nothing with it. :supercry:

Wow. Just wow. That really sucks as I love to watch Myu every now and then, and the subbed ones actually gave me an idea of what the plots of the musicals were.

Though I'm curious why Toei took them down when I thought Bandai had the rights to the musicals? Or as it's still related to SM, it's ultimately owned by Toei?

Either way, the taking down of videos is getting out of hand, in my opinion. I understand the whole revival and all, but some of the things have barely anything or nothing to do with it at all...SMA anyone?

Y'see, the problem is that rights holders hire outside companies to do this work for them, and the people who do it not only do a terribly lazy job (i.e. literally just sweep anything with "sailor moon" in the title,) they don't even have to prove they actually own anything to flag it. Viacom's sweep a couple years ago had webcam videos of people talking about Daria getting removed.

^ What Misha said

But to add... keep in mind, to be 100% true to the law... they are technically allowed to take down whatever they see fit with the name in it. They own the name and if they aren't getting royalties for it, there is absolutely no legal response to them being taking down.

Like I said here, Toei trademarked the property here. And it's a massive trademark at that, covering almost everything. Normally that's a sign they intend to market it and produce it, all signs point to that not likely happening here anymore, so the trademark may have been their means of gaining legal ground to do what they just did on youtube. Otherwise someone could have said "well they don't own the property here!" and potentially have a case.

It's also important to note that trademark expires in about two months. Meaning they lose their grounds to that anymore. So they'll either release the property here, allowing the trademark to exist permanently, or it will die and it'll fair game once again. We'll see. But once it expires, they lose their legal grounds to make any requests for deletion.

Don't confuse this with me saying I agree with what they did... I don't. Nuking fan content like that is a dick move. Some companies make light of fan created content, using it as free marketing. Toei obviously just sees INFRINGEMENT INFRINGEMENT INFRINGEMENT and terminates it.

Maybe uploading copyrighted content that isn't ours?

I don't have a problem with the videos being taken down.

Hopefully, this will be more of an incentive for people to buy the DVDs, and sales will go up

That might be part of the plan. Though I'd have less of a problem with it we didn't have to wait an unknown period of time for the re-releases (if we even get them at all in some countries...) I was a little startled to look through my youtube history and see that practically every SM episode I'd watched was gone and the accounts terminated. They're pretty serious about this right now.

But where do I buy the DVDs besides Ebay and second-hand stores? I don't think they even still distribute DVDs in North America, if they were still I'd have bought it. :|
